These were quite popular in the Caribbean and used in a wide variety of motorsports disciplines like rally,dexterity/autocross,circuit and drag racing. They're quite versatile because of their nimble, lightweight chassis, compact proportions and responsive turbocharged engine. Unfortunately most of them have been wrecked because of their fun personality and the owners usually being very young and inexperienced.
Ireland used to love these, young drivers who found it hard to get insured on more powerful cars would insure these falsely as regular starlets and then they would mod the hell out of them. The kanji said something about time.
Facelift also got a single two tone option in Black and Grey, sold as GT Limited for MK2's and GT Advance for the Mk3's. (Mk1's = 1990-1991 Square headlamps, Mk2's 1992-1994 Square Headlamps, Mk3's 1994-1995 Quad headlamps)
During the early 80s in the island of Puerto Rico I saw this little demons on the 1/4 mile doing the incredible time of 10:99 of course with the Corolla 1.8 engine swap.
My dad bought one back in 88, the EP71, he gave it to me in 1990, as soon I got it, I bought TRD camshaft, put 4 barrels, and do some street racing on my youth 😆
The GT Advance normally comes 2 tone paint though, the quad headlights is just the facelift. You can get an Advance in the pre facelift models as well.
@@mrbetamax1969 No the same, no difference in performance, 2 tone paint, Factory Momo wheel and gear knob, all Advance models have electric windows and central locking. Possible LSD fitted from the factory to them as well is one of the rumours.
Hey Derrick! I have a question for you. If I provide you the shop and car location, would you be able to import it? I found a rx7 bathurst r and it is currently for sale... I can provide website information and the shop details. Thanks
I am really thinking about getting a new daily driver from Japan any ideas for me has to be a wagon that is cheap to insure And it doesn’t have to be 25 years old as I am living in Britain
Mitsu legnum or nissan stagea (you can put an r34 front end on that) why not even a 4wd accord wagon. Or toyota caldina (those came with the same engine as celica gt-fours and double wishbones on every corner.)
Get an Accord that isn’t 25. Your cheapest JDM imports are going to be basic vehicles that are 10-20 years old. Anything 25 is skyrocketing in price right now as they become importable to the US.
There's not much reason to half cut these anymore (and we don't do that) but usually a full car costs less to ship than to cut a car and send a part of one. The only reason I can think of is when your country doesn't allow the import of such old cars.
The EK9 is in a higher class. 1.6L NA. From a chassis and suspension standpoint the EK9 is a lot more hardcore and uncompromising. The Starlet had an undesirable rear panhard bar or solid beam suspension with front McPherson struts. The Starlets while very nimble and agile off the line due to quick spooling turbo and torque, simply would be a notch below the EK9 in performance.
Hi man, a follower for you from Dubai. I was wondering if there is a website that we can check the VIN number and details of the car can show up. I have a MB CLK that I bought from the local market and they car was imported from Japan. I wanted to check the history of it. At least how many KM was it used in Japan. Something like carfax.com in USA
The Starlets came with 4EFE and 4EFTE 1.3L engines while most Corolla models of that era (AE91/AE100/AE110) had 5AFE/5EFE/4AFE 1.5 and 1.6L and some 4AGE 1.6L engines.
I don't know why car companies don't make cars like this anynmore? i don't mean old cars, i mean, why don't they just make small hatchback cars like 1.4 litre turbo's, try make them look a bit sporty, and you're sorted lol. Look at what Toyota did to the follow up to this... they ruined them, maybe they didn't want boy racers? Or what about the Mitsubishi hatchback, people really liked them then the followup was a PoS, whats the one i'm talking about? little small hatchback

Now THIS is a beloved car here in Ireland! They used to be all over, but now a super rare sight!
All the good ones locked away.
He speaks the truth. Everyone in Ireland has a cousin that's owned a turbo starlet 😂
@@derekdok I would love to know how many are hidden away.. and even moreso, would love to see these at a car show!
@@corky9127 haha, I know two people that have, but not anyone that currently owns one.

The pre facelift was cool too because they came in two tone paints.

I own the 1987 starlet. Bought it 2 years ago for $800 au. Only had 13,000 klms on it. Perfect condition, bought it from our friend’s mum’s estate.
You know its going to be a good day when it starts with a PCA video!
JDM TREE! Think it’s been about five years now have always loved the passion you have

That's nuts.
Litterally just done a Edit on this car haha, the GT ep82 we must of dropped the videos litterally same day hahaha nice man!!
When I was in the Navy I had that 4efte engine and trans in my 91 tercel back in 2004. It was fun!
i knew the Starlet but i never heard of a Starlet GT Turbo.
Seems pretty cool though
same i was thinking Toyota Starlet Glanza
The Ep82 last manufactured in 1995.. the 1996 onwards was a Ep91 starlet Glanza
My dad bought one back in 88, the EP71, he gave it to me in 1990, as soon I got it, I bought TRD camshaft, put 4 barrels, and do some street racing on my youth 😆
my dad had one of these in the philippines which was converted to left hand drive.
he sold it because, he told me, it was hard to maintain
manual too
Quite a few of these and the Glanza versions around in the UK
I love these cars i’m thinking of importing one
I used to own one back when I was in lebanon amazing car but unfortunately had a bad crash and couldn't find parts for it so it got scraped
Lovely little pocket rocket.
Kinda reminds me of the Nissan Pulsar GTIR which is of course faster due to it having a friggin SR20DET.
And GTiR was AWD. This is more of a Civic killer
They don't make many hot hatches anymore but I'm glad they at least used to be made.
I’d watch a full in-depth review of the JDM tree.
It's like the Chasers little Brother.
This is called...advanced model with the 4 lights ..my 1st import..and my 1st toyota. Top vid cheers Derek 🍻👍

I remember a USDM Starlet Turbo in 1987-88.
what's the ballpark for the starlet/glanza import to USA running right now?
Great cars had 2 glanzas and a gt
Is the parcel shelf missing?
Hopefully it's not too difficult to find one.
Otherwise, nice cool 90's Toyota, at it's best.
these are nice but the Glanza V is better looking imo
Didn't think there was any of these left.
Nice..
Small and powerful car
So, what's the price of something like the GT turbo in the USA/Japan at the moment? :D Love it!
you should do a review on that yellow car in the background
The Scion truck thing? He's got a few videos of it up
It's a Toyota BB and he's done a review on it already.
quiero un starlet gt ep81 82 4doors que este en buen estado lo compraria al que me lo venda??
I want to buy a starlet turbo like this, if not I would want to buy a Toyota glanza turbo.
How much do they go for Derek?
It would be suck if you videoed your test drives on the cars you review!!

I wonder how it fairs against a Type R Civic.
