I like PW Torenias very much! They do super well in my tropical climate and flower all year if I water once in awhile in the dry season. I don't feed heavily at all. I use a dilute seaweed spray to get them going, then when they develop buds I give them another seaweed spray and they get covered in flowers. By the end of the dry season they can look a bit tired and straggly, so I top dress encouraging more rooting of the stems and they bounce right back. I've also found the clumps form interesting kind of tubers after a years growth, these are small and white in a tight clump, new stems grow out of that. If you over fertilise with this extreme high phosphate fert (as in this video) your plant it will only last one season then die as the soil will get phosphate toxicity, the plant will stunt and get yellow leaves and perish. They are perenials not annuals. However if treated like annuals then you wont mind them only lasting one season, though a pot of these in a humid bright bathroom would look stunning over a nordic winter. They grow very easily from cuttings in the hot wet or growing season. Simply take a runner, taking off the lower leaves for a bit then bury half of it lengh wise, keep it shaded and moist. Or just remove and plant runners that have already rooted in the growing season. Runners produce more flowers and ground cover. The runners are not invasive with the hybrids and seem shallow rooted on undisturbed soil. Im delighted I have all three colours, blue, "pink" or rather lilac and the whitish one. I don't have the "yellow" which I found an odd, bland colour and not terribly yellow, this has been discontinued I believe. However I do have a fourth which has "stunning chartreuse foliage" paired with masses of deep large pure violet flowers (including the base of the petals or tube) with black violet throats. The leaves of this terrific Torenia are smaller and tougher than the other hybrids, dark dark green but with electic yellow veining which forms a very nice overall glowing chartreus carpet of colour. This one it's also not as lax stemmed as the others but lower and tighter growing. Beautiful bright pool of colour without flowers and spectacular with flowers. The flowers arrive in the Spring through the wet or summer season untill the dry or winter when it rests. I must say with the foliage and flowers and growth habit "this one is a true gardeners dream". You can grow it between plants or on a slope, fill in gaps between pavers, in pots. This sun lover just lightens up anywhere you put it. I don't see mention of this variety on the PW site however it did come from Japan sold on Rakuten. It too loves a dilute seaweed extract and flowers very heavily in it's long season. In the dry or cool season it rests as a lovely bright chartreuse ground cover that just needs the odd watering. Cooler weather turns the veins slightly reddish. We have a few wild ones native to our area up in the mountains too, these flower sparsely but are very pretty, mostly deep deep complete violet. Spreading through the grasses and banks where they grow wild. They can be semi invasive in a garden with good soil and sunlight but are very easily pulled up where not wanted. In the wild they behave themselves as they fight for sunlight and soil, sprinkeling their lovely flowers here and there. Thank you PW! What would I do without Torenia's magic touch.
