The artist that worked on Gentle Giant's albums also did some work for King Crimson. He said there were only two groups that intentionally played to be unique, below the surface, and remain unpopular - Gentle Giant and King Crimson.
Derek Shulman - lead singer for the prior blues band "Simon Dupree and the Big Sound" that included the three Shulman Brothers - would suffer a mental breakdown. The heavy metalish album "In a Glass House" addresses his experience. They used to speak more openly about the experience, but seemed to clam up after the advent of the internet.
I have an original album "In a Glass House" which took me five years to find. I later bought two copies of the CD after its introduction. Understanding this mental problem experience adds another dimension to the group and helps explain the reason why they would remain so below the surface.
P.S. They would run into the Beatles in the recording studio (while that band was working on their Sg. Peppers album I think) and they asked to borrow their instruments to cut the song 'Kites' which became a hit. Then girls started chasing Simon Dupree (Derek) around pulling his hair and he lost his head. During that time in the studio, I think Pink Floyd also met up with the Beatles.

Extremely underrated band. In their defense, they actually made it a goal to produce music that was not normal, so they sort of remained not super popular on purpose. Probably why they are so well respected. One of my favorite bands ever.

Your Gentle Giant reaction videos are currently my favorite things on the internet. I've been a huge fan of Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, and ELP, for years, but Gentle Giant is the one progressive rock band I listen to most these days. They were overshadowed by the other bands commercially, but their chops and creativity are off the charts. One little note: Their drummer, John "Pugwash" Weathers, chose to play more of a funky and straight-ahead style compared to some of the other (also great) progressive drummers of the day. As someone who also loves soul, funk, and R&B, that factor mixed in with all their other styles -- which other prog bands didn't really dabble in -- just makes them that much more unique, as you can see/hear in "Free Hand" - one of my absolute fave GG songs.

As a high-schooler and would-be keyboardist, my idols were Gentle Giant, Jethro Tull, Genesis (with Hackett and Gabriel) and PFM. Saw Giant live in Toronto Canada back then. All the keyboardists in those bands were awesome players who eschewed flash and just laid down the business.
It's nice to see some new appreciators of Giant's highly sophisticated but utterly unpretentious work. For all its complexity this piece is just so much joyful fun.
A lovely memory just popped to mind. Me the skinny white teenage hitchhiker on my way from Ottawa to Toronto, picked up by an older black dude in a Volvo. We started talking music and I ended up laying some Giant on him via a cassette from my backpack. He had never heard of them, but got into Knots straight away. "This is a madrigal!," he says. "Yup," says I. "What are the odds I get a ride with this guy?" I thought to myself. "How many people even know what an effing madrigal is?!"
I guess that was a prototypical pre-internet "reaction" scenario right there.
This performance is wonderful to see although the tempo seems a little rushed for spitting out those lyrics, as compared to the studio version. Densely delicious nevertheless. This kind of treasure is one of the best things about RUclips for this old dude.

Saw this same concert at a different venue (Woolsey Hall, Yale University) in the winter of 1978. Best concert I ever heard in my life. These men were amazing. Unfortunately, they gave it up in 1980 after 10 years of great music. The bass player Ray Shulman died a short time ago, but the rest are still alive and have a huge internet following. They thankfully seem to be happier to participate/mingle with fans these days, giving interviews for their rabid fans - even participating in a few videos made by fans (thankfully Ray did a few before he died) So glad I was able to see them live just that once.

Gentle Giant was very underrated. You're also correct that most people, not all, but most, don't want to try to wrap their hand around complicated music, as evidenced by the 47 upvotes currently logged on your video. I can't fault them for it, people like what they like. My musical taste are broad. They go hither and yon. Music to me is like food, sometimes I'm in the mood for a hamburger, but sometimes, I want a steak or pasta. I pick my music depending on the mood I'm currently in.

Chod! Lovely to see you get GG religion and spread the good word to new potential listeners! I was pulled into your channel last week through a link from a Facebook GG fan page to watch you listen to "Alucard" last week, and here you are again!
This band hit me at the perfect time (in their history) and age (for me). I was 16 and a confirmed Yes and ELP fan when the album that gave this cut its title hit the record stores, but I didn't hear it until the following spring when me and my buddies had already bought tickets to see Yes at the Memorial Coliseum in Portland, Oregon in July 1976 . . . with Gentle Giant opening!
Long story short, that might my allegiance switched from Yes to its opening act, and they've remained my favorite band ever since. Got to see GG twice more in a small club in Boston called The Paradise before they broke up, and got to sing one of their simpler songs before the guitarist Gary Green, keyboard player Kerry Minnear, and drummer John Weathers at a fan gathering here in Portland in around 2000.
A lot of other folks here have recommended "On Reflection" (I'd recommend the studio version to be able to hear the incredibly beautiful complexity of that one most clearly).
I'd also be interested to see your reaction to a couple of very different GG cuts: "Knots" from the _Octopus_ album, and "Experience" from _In a Glass House_, which I don't see other GG aficionadoes talk about as much, but I feel it has everything, from terrific lyrics and that medieval recorders sound to just about the hardest rocking this band ever did in the studio.

Loved your reaction - I felt exactly the same back in the 80s. Had the great fortune to see them live three times. Here's the thing, my friend ... music is applied mathematics - timing, beat and notes. Most people are used to arithmetic, counting on their fingers, when it comes to music. Gentle Giant is advanced calculus. If you were to use Gentle Giant music as mathematics, it would chart a course to Mars, or maybe another dimension. Most people cannot (CANNOT) understand it in the way that you do. Music is something they put on to fill the empty space while they're doing something else ... white noise ... or maybe something to tap their toe to. Nobody is tapping their toe to Gentle Giant unless they're a music major. So very cool to see you "get it" about 40 years after they stopped making it ... but get it nonetheless. You're hope in this world.

Nothing compares to GG. Transition, rhytm, color...When 16 in the Montreal Forum, saw these huge eyes opening the curtains to start the whole show. Music out of this world, groovy. Still clearly remember after all these years and GG still is the foundation of my interest in music. Eccentric energy emerging suddenly in organised notes, rythm changing speed and groove. It took talented musicians to create that musical entity. Nothing compares...

Saw GG 4 or 5 times in the seventies, including this show, which I'd been photographing from very close as was possible in those days. I’m lucky to be living in Québec City, so we were on their tour circuit. They filled the pro hockey arena easily here as the area has prog rock's best crowd in the universe it seems. So we were blessed to have them on every tour. I remember reading somewhere that Gay could not figure out how they could easily fill any auditorium anywhere in Québec, Chicoutimi, Rimouski, you name it, and were largerly ignored in the ROC or in the US. Nobody ever could rock a stage the way they did, and we in Québec just love that. Well maybe Deep Purple, but that's hardly prog rock. ;-)

Listen to me for a moment....... I was at the Long Beach concert for example and several other of the live shows back in the 1970s and have always loved Gentle Giant and even would go back home to my band room with all the carpet on the garage walls to insulate the sound as to not disturb the neighbors because we were working band and had to rehearse but go ahead and plan some of those songs almost everyone of their albums I had a different dimension to what gentle giants make up was all about and yes you are completely correct that they are incredible musicians and they did have a few songs that actually were almost top 40 hits like “two weeks in Spain”...... what I found being a guitar player and I am on multi instrument musician myself everybody and gentle giant play six or seven different instruments and so they can transform on so many different levels that if you are a musician even if the type of music is a little hard to wrap your head around you always walk away satisfied being able to experience such a crazy absurd style of 1970s music as they I believe only lasted about 10 years pretty much did an album every year from 1970 to 1980 and I was fortunate enough to see at least half of those tours that when they came to LA. I just wanted to say that I’m really glad that you were thrown them up on your listening list list as band of as one of the bands that you are considering down to dissect and have a opinion about....If you have any questions or or curious about something else only a person that was there in person could have an answer for than certainly hit me up as my name is Jimmy Mills and you can see it it’s on Leigh Mills I believe on Facebook

You are “the man!” I’ve been a fan since the early 70s... I was a lonely evangelist for GG! My close circle of fellow musicians loved it... but it certainly was not for all! They were referred to by some as “music for thinking people!” Welcome to the other planet club! You are becoming my favorite reactor!”

GG where huge in Montréal and many seventies prog bands started their North American tours and careers here (genesis-supertramp-Giant-Yes-King Crimson...) They would play in front of 20,000 people every concert. Saw them 3 times and all shows were memorable!

Thanks for doing GG. Interesting observation about funk! That is one that I never thought of about them but I can see your viewpoint. They were never popular beyond the progressive rock arena where they are widely acknowledged as the holy grail of the genre. I know many people who would spend a lot of money to see them regroup one more time. Sadly this will not happen. They were the most original band ever.

Gentle Giant take everything to a whole other level. You get it. That's refreshing in a time where music let's just say, hasn't pushed any boundaries or even taste for too long. Enjoy the rest, because, oh there's more with Gentle Giant. Be well!

Be aware that the studio version of this song has a through-composed instrumental section that they never played live - they replaced it with the funky breakdown part. GG tended to radically re-arrange songs for the stage - usually to simplify them (believe it or not!) and make more room for improvisation - so it's usually best to check out studio versions first.

Much of this live version is different from the original studio album cut, it's like a jazz piece where they kept the main theme pretty much intact and then wove a completely new middle section from it. The crazy thing is, at the same time as this performance their current album was an exercise in... *mainstream pop rock* . Yes, Gentle Giant were a mind-melting anomaly.

That was an awesome reaction! I thought you would like them when I suggested Alucard. Yes, GG is for real and no I don't know why they weren't as popular as other Prog bands. I guess because they never had a single that could get radio air play. I think the next song you should do from them is from this same concert called On Reflection. It shows off their vocal abilities. Four of the five sing polyphonic lines and they also start off playing one kind of instrument and then switching to a different instrument part way through. Multi-instrumentalists, multi-talented. It's not fair how great they are!

Yep, Reg Dwight was the keyboardist in Simon Dupree and the Big Sound for a while. They were a psychedelic, R&B/Soul band, before evolving into Gentle Giant. The R&B and funk influences are in the 'soup' that make up GG.

Yes, a mind-blowing progressive rock band.
Another great relatively unknown prog-rock band you should check out is Touch.
They only made one self-titled album "Touch" in 1968. It will also blow your mind. Way ahead of it's time and out-of this-world.
(Fun Fact: the keyboardist in Touch was the original keyboard player on the classic 60's frat-rock song "Louie Louie").
Touch got very little recognition (though the LP was played on underground rock stations at that time).
(Fun Fact: during the recording of this LP, there were many prominent musicians there in the studio watching them record,
including Eric Clapton and Grace Slick).

These were the band of my youth, and I reacted like you did, 'why doesn't anyone else appreciate what they're doing?' I got every album as it came out, and saw them at every tour I could, but never heard them on the radio, only ever saw a couple of music press articles and one TV concert appearance on the BBC, that's it. I only ever met one other person who had one of their albums. The music press didn't like them, GG just wouldn't play their games. They were always a musicians band too, if you get what I'm saying, they were way beyond the general publics tastes or comprehension, maybe always will be, this is still challenging stuff even now. I have heard little glimpses of their influence in others music, and you just know they must have a GG album or two, but they maybe just can't come up with anything even approaching this. PLEASE more live reactions. How about the live version of 'Cogs in cogs/ Proclamation'? ruclips.net/video/t2c4k_dHA2Q/видео.html

OMG I've been begging for reactions to Gentle Giant for ages, and this is the first I've seen. I love Free Hand, but you really really need to hear On Reflection. The live versions have better energy, but the studio versions have an awesome craft and precision. And yeah -- nobody's ever heard of them, nobody respects them, and they totally bleepin' blow it away, every time.
