Really common question: 'What if you can't have gelatin?' Answer: If you can't have gelatin for religious reasons try halalgel, if you are a vegetarian try ovalette (asian food stores may have it). Enjoy baking!
+How To Cook That I haven't tried this particular recipe, but I frequently use a very similar one as a base batter for just about everything, that also is based on a combination of water and oil (and eggs) as liquid (some family members of mine are lactose intolerant so that recipe gets used a LOT)and I hear about adding gelatine to the mix for the first time now. I've never done that before and the cake always turns out beautifully without it (or anything to replace it) - I simply start off (after beating the whites of course), beating the yolks and sugar together and gradually add the oil and water to it - and it mixes perfectly without the gelatine. (Then go on to add the dry ingredients, don't overmix after adding the flower and proceed as shown with the whites and the baking) Just in case anyone doesn't feel like hunting down a replacement for this. ^_^

My friend would pick off all the macarons on the top, eat them, and then shove the cake into her mouth in 3 bites. Me? I'd eat it all in one giant mouthful. Good job once more, HowToCookThat!
A fun trick with rainbow cakes is to ice them with dark grey or black icing so that when it's first cut, the rainbow is a complete surprise. I did this once for a Pink Floyd fan, and did a Dark Side of the Moon logo on the top.
Thanks for this lovely recipe. When I was growing up, my step-mother would take long, thin skewers to poke holes in a cake while it was still in the pan, and then pour some flavored or plain simple syrup over the top. After letting is absorb into the cake, she'd remove it from the pan. This made the entire layer moist, not just the top. A real favorite was simple syrup mixed with some fresh lemon juice, for a really lovely, bright lemon flavor.
March 22 2013 Oh, cool make sure you get good quality black food colouring otherwise you well need to add too much and it will make the cake taste a bit weird

Hi Ann just wanted to say I am a really big fan of you and your work and I am inspired. You inspire me to be more creative and to try something new. You also show me that the what seems like impossible is possible. I will be making this cake today and hopefully it goes well. You are creative and show it in a way that suits you and that is a rare talent. I'm proud of you Ann. Keep going!
Actually the rainbow was and is a promise from our Creator, that he would never flood the earth again. The symbol was purposefully stolen and rebranded by the Elite to mock our Creator. That said, I have nothing against homosexual people :-)
If you want to frost it you do want to take off that brown layer, because otherwise when you cut into the cake you will be able to see the brown layer between the frosting and the rainbow and it just doesn't look nice. If you don't care about that, then no, you don't have to.
I never had 6 cake tins and always wanted to make a rainbow cake but it wouldve of just took like a hole day to make but your version will take me so much more less ! Ty !
I was worried about the bottom layer being over baked and the top layer being under baked. I thought about it and I think I figured out why it works. Cakes don’t bake all at once. They bake gradually starting from the outside, then moving to the center. Sometimes, the top of the cake is too brown, so, being able to add it at the end might actually work better than baking the entire cake at once. Baking it this way allows the baking to from the bottom up, rather than from the outside to the center. Either way, I trust her and I will try it.
@@tagrisaj3344 well you can also follow Ann's macarons recipe in the description. Also, the macarons are more for decorating and you could easily switch that out for anything else. You can buy them from nice bakeries or high end supermarkets if you think it's too much hassle. There's nothing wrong with using shop bought items if you're struggling with a recipe.
@@pigeon1923 Yes but the problem with that is that this is supposed to be a relatively EASY dessert and adding macaroons makes it hard for it to become a beginner dish.
@@tagrisaj3344 I don't know why you're so pressed about the macarons. Like i said, the macarons are optional. Either buy some, make it yourself or leave it out. Use that brain of yours instead of moaning. The macarons aren't particularly difficult to do in my opinion. Maybe try the recipe once or twice and you'll get it right. Just as long as you follow the recipe, you should be good to go. You could easily replace the chocolate and macarons for a nice easy buttercream frosting and some sprinkles.
this looks gorgeous! all of your videos have such beautiful results. i'm curious though, if i want to make it with the same amount of batter but using fewer colours to make a different colour scheme (e.g. only 3 colours, or 5), how would that affect the baking times for each layer?
Yeah, like she didn't make it for pride or LGBTQA+, but that's what it reminded me of. My friend always makes stuff like this for pride, and it always looks really cool.
The gayest cake I’ve seen in a while, love it and probably gonna make a rainbow cake soon, but it’s not gonna be a steam cake, jyst food dye bc I don’t use gelatine bc I’m a vegetarian
Ann, if your out there and you have just a moment please help me! I've baked this cake five times in total including three times in the last four days and every time it has massively shrunk after removing. In the worst case it shrank by almost half in height and a good 3cm in diameter. In the best case it lost about 30% of its height and 1 cm of diameter. **Adjustments I've made and results.** Increased cooking temperature from 160 to 170...helped a bit. More even layers. Still shrunk a lot. Changed steam bath from one tray at the bottom, to two ramekins next to the cake and baked at 170° . Much more rise during baking time but still a lot of shrinkage after. Both the above, baked the final layer *much* longer (you say 12. I did it like, 25). Also I let it cool slowly in the oven with the door cracked. This time it shrank very little in diameter (maybe less than 1cm, but lost almost half its height). Obviously any of the changes I made could have had unknown factors affecting the outcome too. I love your videos and appreciate the time and effort you put in. Your recipies are wonderful but this one just has me beat. Thank you so much.
Thank u Ann was looking for this idea as I need to bake a three layer cake with different colours for a flag at one shot for a competition.. really helped ❤️ thanks again

You could easily replace the chocolate and macarons for a nice easy buttercream frosting and some sprinkles.
you put this vid up on my birthday and the amaizingness of the cake made me happy thanks
Never understood why people don't make these cakes in flavors.
But then this cake would taste of blackberry, blueberry, lime, lemon, orange and strawberry. Just too much!
JE Hoyes People expect (naturally) different colors should taste different.
that would taste disgusting no offense
Lauren Cosgrove Specifically, what would taste disgusting?
+Lauren Cosgrove hey phandom
I was wondering how to put the layers on the cake but I never found any really useful video. I'll use this even for the batter itself xD Thank you 💙
Something scream queens pls
What a fun cake! I am surprised the bottom layer does not get over cooked. Thanks for the recipe!
How about an anime cake
this looks gorgeous! all of your videos have such beautiful results. i'm curious though, if i want to make it with the same amount of batter but using fewer colours to make a different colour scheme (e.g. only 3 colours, or 5), how would that affect the baking times for each layer?
This makes me soo gay!
If you get it, you get it
Everyone would get that at this point
This cake with macarons on top looks cute, Ann! Totally should be sold at some bakery.
Can you make a vegan recipe? :D
No
I like the little added macaron touches on top of the rainbow cake! good job, Ann. ;)
Nobody:
Me: _gay cake_
This cake should be covered with frosting, so you don't see the rainbow until you cut it. Dramatic reveal!
I just realised that it's also the colours of the LGBT+ flag☺
Pride cake, yay! ❤️💛💚💙💜
well yeah it is a rainbow cake
Yeah, like she didn't make it for pride or LGBTQA+, but that's what it reminded me of. My friend always makes stuff like this for pride, and it always looks really cool.
+Davika Crystal u kinda slow
Wat does LGBT stand for ?
This is so beautiful! I am so happy to find your recipe! Will try this out for my daughter's birthday
The gayest cake I’ve seen in a while, love it and probably gonna make a rainbow cake soon, but it’s not gonna be a steam cake, jyst food dye bc I don’t use gelatine bc I’m a vegetarian
IS THIS SIMPLE?! GIRL, U R SO GOOD!
**Adjustments I've made and results.**
Increased cooking temperature from 160 to 170...helped a bit.
Just wondering, would the layers that got baked more turn out different from the other layers? Loved the vid btw 💕
Thank u Ann was looking for this idea as I need to bake a three layer cake with different colours for a flag at one shot for a competition.. really helped ❤️ thanks again
This looks lovely! There is an Italian cookie (Venetians) that has lovely colorful layers with raspberry jam in between the individually baked layers. This reminds me of those delicious cookies and it made me smile! Thanks for sharing.
I've made several of your record and always loved them, I think this is another I need to try
Hi Ann, you are my favorite baker ever. Thanks for the recipe I'll be sure to try it
"what are you watching? why do you need to watch cake videos at 8 am!? who needs cake at 8 am!?
Can i use something else instead of gelatin
Or
Dont add any gelatin
Will the water and oil mix ?
Or will it be worse than gelatin+ dry ingr
What is the difference ?
