They're modeled after Hearthstone cards, its just something Winter (presumably, idk I'm relatively new here) made up for the fun of it. They made up special abilities that would apply in that game based on their strengths and weaknesses as Starcraft players.
Only watched game 1 but Shin is so frustrating to watch as a Zerg, several times he makes mistakes like not finishing off a building etc that we can understand, but his aversion to getting ling attack-speed is an unforgivable sin. Everytime I give him a chance I'm disappointed.

Protoss literally can be unattackable through overcharge. A close game came from a Protoss playing on half the bases as his opponent, and would have won if he built tempests. He literally lost for not building a unit. Shin should have won this series in ten minutes, Protoss carry bad players

So we see an abundance of Protoss players in the metal leagues and M/GM, yet they never win premiere tournaments. That is the issue that the latest patch is SUPPEDLY addressing.

That's why they can't really be buffed at the very top level otherwise this filters down, and tournaments just become a massive Protoss-fest and nobody wants to watch.
Eh, zerg is kind of bad early game when Protoss can end the game with harassment. Especially more so now that queens are becoming more expensive; zerg really doesn't have early defenses. Spines/Spores are a waste of money

38:14 this is why I think Mothership should not be pulled by vipers, especially now that they are expensive again. Otherwise they are useless in PvZ.
