Instantly takes me back to the summer of 89' . . . we were young, free, running wild in the night, sleeping all day, with not a care in the world . . .
I'm 60 now and remember this song when it came out. I know why many cry when hearing this. It's a part of us remembering when we were young and life was much more simple then without a care in the world. And listening to this captures those memories and feelings because we live them. Many we knew back then are gone now. So I'm grateful to have those experiences. Because in the end the only thing we take with us when we leave this world is what is inside. Our experience as soul. Thanks for the post!
Absolutely agree... Listening to these songs from the '80's is both uplifting and sad at the same time. It's difficult to put the emotion I feel listening to music from my youth into words and when you try, some people don't understand. I guess the journey and what brings us back is very different for everyone!
I agree totally with you. I’m 55 myself and this song really takes me back to simpler times. I am glad I lived through those days when we communicated like humans with our friends and didn’t give a second thought about what we wore, what we listened to and which bands we went and saw. Good times that will live forever in my heart.
Yes. I just saw them two days ago in Washington D.C., on their farewell tour and they performed this, among their other great classics and it was so nostalgic. I really love these guys and actually hate saying farewell.
They just posted a clip of this on IG and I had to comment. I'm a retired dancer (1987-1996) and this song was on HEAVY rotation. What a fabulous magic carpet ride!
I was 17 when this came out and pretty new to The B-52s. This song hit my soul in a way I can’t even explain. I knew instantly that this song was special. It’s summer 2020, I’m now 48 and still feeling the magic.
Saw the group in the summer of 1990. The world was at peace, the Cold War was over. I was in college with a bunch of friends and we partied a lot without a care in the world and me and Mary C went to this show, with Ziggy Marley as the opening act. RIP Mary.
This never fails to bring tears. So sweetly melancholy and hauntingly beautiful. The music, the girl's melody and Fred's counterpoint all blend to perfection. Now I'm going to sit and play this again and remember long gone friends.
Fred looks so beautiful here when glammed up! I wasn't a fan for a couple of decades and couldn't stand them! I mean...they were not and are not Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, or Guns N' Roses! Not even Michael Jackson! But you know what they ARE?! WONDERFUL! I love and adore them!
This is the album that really made me a fan. This album kicked their careers up into a whole new stage and earned them a whole new generation of fans. What brilliantly inspired, super fun music. What an original sound. I saw them live circa 2007 and they rocked so hard! Keith Strickland might just be the hardest working man in rock 'n' roll. And with all the weird tunings and an endless collection of Telecasters, Keith's guitar tech is the hardest working guitar tech in the biz.
The band looks so gorgeous here. It's one of their best songs. I totally crushed in Keith back in the day. It was a Scorpio thing. I love it when Keith and Kate are dancing in the livingroom. The attention to detail makes this trip down nostalgia lane so glorious. 1. The furbaby. 2. Cindy's brown wig. 3. Kate's Pebbles-inspired look. 4. Anything Fred wears!!! 5. Michael Stipe's cameo. 6. Kate's polka dot head scarf. 7. Cindy's perfectly lined 👀 8. Keith's adorable smile. 9. Fred's 💄10. I really just love this song. P.S.. Is that a picture of Keith and Ricky in the beginning? You know post punk/new wave's coolest guitar player is smiling in his Heaven over how successful the band became. And his influence is all over every song on "Cosmic Thing."
Quite right you are. This was a truly lovely song, capturing the moment and the epoch, and what a beautiful and arty video, indeed featuring Michael Stipe . Love the Catherine Deneuve-look Cindy has with her blond beehive. Keith is as sexy and handsome as ever (why didn't he Michael Stipe end up together, I wonder?). Kate is always stunning as always. And Fred as silly as usual. Bliss!
Good lord, those two girls could melt you into the ground. What an amazing mark this group of musicians has left on so many of us. Cosmic Thing is an album I’ll never stop listening to.
I discovered this album the summer when I was 13, a NYC kid who never felt like I “fit in” to any conventional group. This song spoke to me and still does. The memories it brings back, the feelings I get when I hear this song… I can’t help but be sentimental about it, and so grateful. 🥹❤️🎶
The best moments are the ones you don't realize you'll have nostalgic feelings for. And they can be something as simple as being asleep in the back seat of the car driving from Maryland to Maine lightly hearing this song playing over the car speakers and my dad humming along.
The most beautiful thing about the B-52's is how they are the perfect band. They all LOVE each other. There are no periods where they didn't get along. No one was jealous of anyone else. They just carried on sounding great. That kind of band chemistry will probably never happen again. You can give me examples of bands with chemistry like this (there are few) but you cannot give me an example of a band with said chemistry that has lasted this long.
I know what you mean I also love this song and the album too and I wish I grew up during the time cassettes, tapes, records, etc. because when I just listen to a whole album from one artist intentionally I find that I discover so many different songs from the artist that are considered favorites of mine that some people may not know of if bog listening to the whole album. My favorite tracks from “Cosmic Thing” are ‘Dry County’, ‘Deadbeat Club’, ‘Love Shack’, ‘Roam,’ ‘Follow Your Bliss’, and I love ‘Rock Lobster’ too!
I feel that in a lot of ways those bands were the first to speak directly to nerds. Course I'm sure there were others before them that I'm ignorant of but they were still pretty good at it.
Exactly... Outnumbered. Dead Beats are easily spotted, because they're treated conventionally & enjoy the Company of others regularly... Love ❤ this Band
I had no idea they WEREN'T in the Hall; I had just always assumed they were in it and I just hadn't heard about it yet or something. The B-52's were one of the premiere New Wave bands who went on to create a body of work that included several jems, including Deadbeat Club. The melodies, harmonies, the colors in the music, the purity, the texture, the polish - it's perfection... or damn near.
I was in Tower Records when I first heard "Cosmic Thing". "Deadbeat Club" had me dancing in the aisles! I bought the cassette (I'm that old), and played it over and over again for months!
I just love Kate and Cindy's different looks in this just one video. Different hair, clothes and makeup. It was so retro in the late 80s when this video was made, but still looked up to date.

I love the way Cindy dances. And the arms-on-hips pose that Kate does is so iconic. The perfect song, perfect video. This is how all music videos should be. Shoestring budget, but with plenty of style and passion.
This is a true masterpiece! B-52's are SO WEIRD, and I love it! Be sure to watch "the Adventures of Pete & Pete" where Kate and Michael Stype have cameos! That show had so many music legends in it that kids had no idea who they were! Iggy Pop, Gordon Gano...
I didn't know that. Only discovered that show a year or so ago because of the theme tune, which kind of reminds me of the Replacements a tiny bit even though it's not. I'll have to check out some eps. Thanks!
This band is much more than people can imagine. They've launched the new wave musical genre with their unpretentionous look and brought us fabulous songs with high quality musical value. And this video is perfect in capturing a great band's moment.

Was a freshman in high school...remember the kids on the bus singing this and 'Love Shack'. Hard to believe its been 30 years, remember it like it was yesterday.
I miss those days bad. I miss those girls. I miss Athens, GA. I was in the Army a few months after this song came out. Now it's like some ancient memorabilia. No cell phones. Buying Vinyl and stick shift cars.
@@scottraygor9843 You guys are insane. She's no beauty, and to not be homely she needed gobs of makeup. And in case you don't know, she's an old lady now.
"oh no, here they come, the members of the deadbeat club" I'm sure many people can relate to that having heard the same thing in their own youth. Makes me remember how isolated I felt back then. There were only a precious few others that 'got it.'
Deadbeat Club lifted me up every time when I was sad and feeling misunderstood in 1990. Now in 2019 I'm no more misunderstood since I found my voice and I am forever in their debt. Still makes me happy and sad.
It was the '80's. I was a teenager happy as a pig in shit to have my bedroom in the basement of my family home. My turntable regularly spun the extended 12" version of Rock Lobster and the song was a staple at my high school dances. I pretty much only knew their music. Finding any video footage of them was almost impossible, all one could really hope for was a chance encounter on MTV or Much Music and I never saw the B52's on that. The internet was totally unheard of. Still, the music spoke to us and me and my friends recognized a one-of-a-kind band when we heard it.
When I was about 8 years old, I vividly remember sitting on our couch, watching this video on MTV, waiting for my mom to drive me to this little girl's house I went to school with, and lived about 4 streets away. I remember my mom was mad about something, running around the house yelling, and I was just transfixed by this video and song. I didn't understand what it was trying to say. I ended up going all through grade school and high school with that girl, and we drifted apart when we became teenagers. I found out over Facebook that she had melanoma and died in 2012. I remember she had lots of moles all over her skin when we were kids. I never saw her again after 1999 when we got out of high school, but I always imagined I'd bump into her again someday as an adult, and I'd get to talk with her about hanging out as kids. I really hate the whole concept of regret and unfinished business. Time just seems to slip away. Anyway, this song reminds me of that time, and of her.
@@emirvmendoza That's so weird Lol. Yeah that channel is great, isn't it? I love his videos. Thanks for the kind words. I feel like I should speak her name into the universe or something since I got some replies here. Her name was Kristen.

This song is timeless, and came along in the most exciting part of my life. It could quite honestly be the coolest song ever written. Those harmonies are to die for!
That has to be REM's Michael Stipe at 1:19 (and a couple bits later on). Never noticed that before. The B-52s exist in their own world where it's always a fun, retro 60s party.
Yeah, all the way through *with hair!!* REM and The B52s both bands from Georgia, so crossed tracks many times. Frankly they're the only positive donation the state has to offer.
One thing to note if you are a millennial, gen Z, or maybe even an alphan: this has 80's vibes but is not a definitive example of the 80's. The B-52s were retro, a sub-style of many sub-styles at the time. So don't think everybody looked and acted like that back then. Having your own unique look and sound was the norm.
@@d.brooks2035 Any idea who the brunette in the black skirt/hose/heels with white pearls was? Perfect example of what you'd see in the club scene in the '80's. Man I miss those days!
I'm a member of the Deadbeat Club and have been the entirety of my 64 year old life. Come on kids, you can do it also! No shirts and ties no shoes, toes in the sand................
Fred’s back vocal … these guys just lift me..god knows I need it..gonna get my 12 inchers out..and get something to play em on. This is pure B52s…unsurpassed…
So much creativity coming out from that part of the world- B52's.. 10,000 Maniacs.. REM (M. Stipe @ 1:22).. What a wonderful time to be alive and have this music!
This entire album is gold. One of their best. Got me through some tough times. Another gem, and the girl's voices are amazing. Can't wait to see them in November!
"Cosmic Thing" is one of the all time best driving albums, and this one of the all time driving songs. So many fond memories cruisin' to a day on the slopes or the beach to these tunes.
They all look very beautiful in his video! Keith looks like a classic Hollywood movie heartthrob, Kate is scorching HOT, Cindy, oh Cindy looks like a dreamgirl as always, and Fred is so fierce! I just wish Ricky was here though.
There is something special about an artifact of your years from 18 to 29 or so. And yes, we seemed to have more time to hang out, talk, and just LIVE within the actual world, not a world view from a screen.
That was one of their most beautiful videos, totally capturing them in their prime of their lives. The song is so soulful and vibey and there never has been a time that I have not loved hearing that song
I remember when Ricky died. I didn't think we would hear anymore B-52s, not with the same carefree fun that the group had when it was the five of them. When are they going to be inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame? They should've been by now, it's been over 40yrs of their music. Still one of a select few of my favorite party bands. And Keith... you should've been my husband by now, lol. Peace out!
I saw 9 of these cosmic Thing concerts up &down the West Coast. I teared a bit when it became time for me to head home the Deadbeat Club video is shot at a friend’s house in Virginia

Yes, that's Ricky. Keith submitted that photo to an article that was written about the first LGBT themed dance that ever happened on the University of Georgia campus, back in the early 70's.
Absolutely their best song! Tells a great story many young people can relate to. I was 23 years old when this song came out. Still puts a smile on my face. Very nostalgic.
Takes me back to 1990, when I started my nurse training. Living in a nurses home in an old psychiatric hospital in North London. Hardly any money but the time of my life. Happy days
This song really takes me back to those summer nights of my youth. It mixes beautiful harmonies and a great bass line and that quirky B 52 way with a song. I think that I need to dance in torn sheets in the rain before my pilot light goes out!!!
I don't think there has truly been more perfectly paired voices than Cindy and Kate in pop music, quite similar, blend wonderfully in unison, yet distinctly articulate and subtle differences, beautiful in harmony. I can often pick out who goes high and who goes low, seems like Cindy tends to take upper harmonies more often. Regardless, this song in particular illustrates how these two were born to sing together.
This song transports me to MUCH simpler times. This song needs to be played on a hot, humid summer's night with good friends & good food. No cellphones! No drugs! No drinking! No attitude! No technology! Just PURE, basic human to human talking & interacting. I miss those years so much.
The harmony of Cindy and Kate voices is so beautiful

The sound of Kate's and Cindy's voices together is one of the most beautiful sounds in the universe. Tears in my eyes.

You can see/hear where Voice of the Beehive got their sound from ..
TRUE!!!
The didn't sing harmony, but their voices blended together like peanut butter and chocolate.

Was a freshman in high school...remember the kids on the bus singing this and 'Love Shack'. Hard to believe its been 30 years, remember it like it was yesterday.
I still have the cassette, and an extra tape for good measure.
I still have the cassette, and an extra tape for good measure.
@@williambatson2514 I still have the cassette, too. I was working at Musicland inside a mall.
“We’ll dance in the garden in torn sheets in the rain.” One of my favorite music-induced mental pictures.
Same here. It underscores the sheer joy of simply being alive, young and carefree.
This should've been a huge hit. My friends and I played this to death, what a groove, and what a group!
I love Cindy's eyes, lying on the couch and singing. She is a beauty.
I'd crawl through mud with a snorkel for that chick...
I miss those days bad. I miss those girls. I miss Athens, GA. I was in the Army a few months after this song came out. Now it's like some ancient memorabilia. No cell phones. Buying Vinyl and stick shift cars.
kevyn aucion did the makeup
@@scottraygor9843 You guys are insane. She's no beauty, and to not be homely she needed gobs of makeup. And in case you don't know, she's an old lady now.
I love Cindy for ever.
"oh no, here they come, the members of the deadbeat club" I'm sure many people can relate to that having heard the same thing in their own youth. Makes me remember how isolated I felt back then. There were only a precious few others that 'got it.'
Three VEHICLES
Kate....how can one be so many things at once...classy...trashy....mature amongst crazies, or the craziest one. I love her so.
Cindy too... classy, trashy, shy, succubus...
kate is just awesome i love that woman so damn much
I always loved Kate. But seeing the videos again, Cindy is growing on me too...
Yeah, I Love her too.
Me too!
Was just reading your comment on Bright Sun Films' video on Century III Mall, then I found this. RIP to your friend.
@@emirvmendoza That's so weird Lol. Yeah that channel is great, isn't it? I love his videos. Thanks for the kind words. I feel like I should speak her name into the universe or something since I got some replies here. Her name was Kristen.
@@facerip2222 found your small saga through the comment chain on Bright Sun, and I have to say, yours was the first comment to ever make me cry. Hope you're doing good out there
That’s a perfect way to sum it up: time slipping away. Reminiscing about the great times long gone.
My mems of B55s a pub in Uk used to play this, we danced threw beer, it was a crazy Disco, amazing times. still playing the Bs at 60 yo old
This song is timeless, and came along in the most exciting part of my life. It could quite honestly be the coolest song ever written. Those harmonies are to die for!
That has to be REM's Michael Stipe at 1:19 (and a couple bits later on). Never noticed that before. The B-52s exist in their own world where it's always a fun, retro 60s party.
Pete buck later
Yeah, all the way through *with hair!!*
REM and The B52s both bands from Georgia, so crossed tracks many times. Frankly they're the only positive donation the state has to offer.
Check out a clip on Sesame Street with REM singing ‘Furry Happy Monsters’ - there is a Kate muppet singing on it!
All from Athens, Ga. (Indigo Girls are too)
One thing to note if you are a millennial, gen Z, or maybe even an alphan: this has 80's vibes but is not a definitive example of the 80's. The B-52s were retro, a sub-style of many sub-styles at the time. So don't think everybody looked and acted like that back then. Having your own unique look and sound was the norm.
I met Kate when she was in Athens filming this video...circa February or March 1990. Good times.
A friend and classmate of mine is in this, he was in a band that was playing with them and REM, did you see Michael Stipe in this too?
@@d.brooks2035 Any idea who the brunette in the black skirt/hose/heels with white pearls was? Perfect example of what you'd see in the club scene in the '80's. Man I miss those days!
I'm a member of the Deadbeat Club and have been the entirety of my 64 year old life. Come on kids, you can do it also! No shirts and ties no shoes, toes in the sand................
@The Kraemer no dice bud!
Fred’s back vocal … these guys just lift me..god knows I need it..gonna get my 12 inchers out..and get something to play em on. This is pure B52s…unsurpassed…
This bands always connects me to joy (no matter what I may be going through).
Yeah sorry we lost him!
Yeah I know, me too!
Me too!
I miss him too!
I feel like Ricky never really left them. His spirit is so pervasive throughout this song.
Perhaps B52's greatest song?
Pure magic.
There is something special about an artifact of your years from 18 to 29 or so. And yes, we seemed to have more time to hang out, talk, and just LIVE within the actual world, not a world view from a screen.
A time machine to a kinder, fun-er, happier world. Take me there.
That was one of their most beautiful videos, totally capturing them in their prime of their lives. The song is so soulful and vibey and there never has been a time that I have not loved hearing that song
Such a joyous and yet wistful song❤ love them so much
ABBA had Mamma Mia....Somebody needs to create a musical featuring ONLY B52s music.
A big AMEN!
Yes Yes Yes!!!!!! I love your idea!!!
I'll get right on that then!
Yes these Guys and Girls are way under rated.
B-52's fun Music!
The Greatest Song this Band Ever Made !
This might just be the coolest pop song I ever heard, by the coolest band. Pure gold. 💖
Peace out!
Released 25 years today! Still one of the best songs by B-52!!!
+fabrice4705 i always skip 2005 in my mind too...i think it's wishful thinking on my part....
Bush was president. I didn't think we could go lower. The Deadbeat Club are grownups now. Time to get serious.
@@bongodave13 Lol you think that is lower. Wait until you hear about Trump.
The whole album! I bought it when it was released, aged 9. I think of it as a masterpiece and I feel joy every time I listen. It's perfect.
I'm 17 and I love B52s! All thanks to my dad 😉🤣❤
I saw 9 of these cosmic Thing concerts up &down the West Coast. I teared a bit when it became time for me to head home the Deadbeat Club video is shot at a friend’s house in Virginia
Cindy has the most soulful eyes.
1982. Small club in Honolulu. They played for about three hours with a few breaks. Maybe 40 people max in that place. Fantastic!
Happy 74th Birthday Kate Pierson April 27, 1948 Weehawken, NJ.
74 is a good year for a farewell tour. You have entertained us forever.
Thanks for the memories.. We love you..
I'm 75 year old Boomer and these guys clicked with me from the first few notes of Rock Lobster
Been listening to the B52's for a lifetime, im now 62 years of age, this band provides memories of some so great times,I love it listen regular kate and cindy's harmonies are to die for
I can't deal with Keith's handsomeness, gosh. He's so perfect.
@@ziweiyuan is that Ricky beside him? What am amazing pic, where did it come from?
Yes, that's Ricky. Keith submitted that photo to an article that was written about the first LGBT themed dance that ever happened on the University of Georgia campus, back in the early 70's.
@@ziweiyuan Which photo?
@@blackmore4 The link in my post.
@@ziweiyuan For some reason, I can't see any link. Could you send it again in this thread?
Those girls could lure pirates from the sea. LOVE THIS BAND
If I'm coming to the end of life's journey I could do worse than listen to this to send me on my way.......This is the definition of 'feel good'.
Absolutely their best song! Tells a great story many young people can relate to. I was 23 years old when this song came out. Still puts a smile on my face. Very nostalgic.
It's amazing how good their music sounds on some good vintage stereo gear.
I think it's pretty much impossible to be sad when listening to the B-52s.
Unless it's Topaz or Follow Your Bliss!😂
@Trista Fravel Good Point! That was devastating!😭 I would feel the same!
Actually, for me, this is one of the saddest songs I know. But it’s also one of my favorites. 🥂
Bring me back my man
I thought so too until someone posted a comment about Ricky. Damn, that made me cry.
The most beautiful precious band. ❤❤❤❤
Takes me back to 1990, when I started my nurse training. Living in a nurses home in an old psychiatric hospital in North London. Hardly any money but the time of my life. Happy days
Definitely my favorite of theirs. ❤❤❤
This song really takes me back to those summer nights of my youth. It mixes beautiful harmonies and a
great bass line and that quirky B 52 way with a song. I think that I need to dance in torn sheets in the rain
before my pilot light goes out!!!
I just love the fact.....they were all best friends! Awesome....I'm a rocker and I've always loved the B-52's from the moment I heard Rock Lobster!
As soon as I get friends, I'll go with them on a road trip playing this song during the whole thing
Could quite possibly be their finest song
🙂
Been playing this a lot last couple weeks! Brings me back! My fav B52 Song and vid!
This song transports me to MUCH simpler times. This song needs to be played on a hot, humid summer's night with good friends & good food. No cellphones! No drugs! No drinking! No attitude! No technology! Just PURE, basic human to human talking & interacting. I miss those years so much.
We will never have times like this again
Sooooo TRUE......
"Those WERE the DAYS"
