one of their 7 homes....poor things! 3 Rembrandts. Lovely homes of people who stepped on the poor people for years.....

Delighted the family kept really Rembrandt! 80% tax was a disgusting example of penal taxation. Nobody should pay more than 30%.

Oh please, 7 houses and they had to give up some art? I find the entire idea of these men who by birth think they have the right to "have it all" while others toil for nothing in the basement kitchen. The Duke sounds ghastly.....make the homes museums and be done with it...

joseph cummings I find jealousy the curse of western society! High tax kills incentive to work. But to look at other people and be jealous is very weak. Trying working and then see if 80% tax is fair!

Excuse me my good man, my comment has nothing to do with not incentivizing hard work. I applaud self made men of whom I am one. The "Downton Abbey" type structure of society of "work" as you refer to is ghastly. A few people who owned everything by birth, not hard work.....it was that very structure that did not allow anyone to rise from dark dank kitchens in the basement of the mansion to rise up and own anything. sorry that he had to pay tax.....poor thing. Duke of Devonshire had 7 homes...none that he worked to attain, just inherited them. The British caste system is finally dying.....a slow death, thank goodness.

joseph cummings All those Dukes did great things for their country. The class system! Today instead of English men who love their country you have very rich ruthless oligarchs for every quarter.
Also a number of new rich who treat people appallingly.
The Duke of Devonshire Marlborough all saved England in their day! They earned it and did what any normal family would do is pass it on to their children. I see no wrong in that. What would you do if you had money to pass onto your children? Or perhaps people who despise the old money are jealous because they weren’t up to making money.
80% tax is designed to create a country of morons!

I have no issue with people passing their homes and fortunes along to their heirs. The issue remains that the British system by its very design was to have a few at the top with everything and the rest have just enough sustenance to simply get by in life. I cannot believe anyone would think it fair when the "Duke" says he had to give up one of his 7 houses and 1 of his 3 Rembrants which must to the state....Oh poor him.....We are coming close to this same system albeit without the titles in the US....The1% have it all and the remainder struggle... I love the grand homes and art and antiques that fill them, however when one pauses and realizes how they came to be, on the backs of the poor, they don't appear quite so beautiful.

Three months that cost five million in death duty. That three months should have been waivered in the interest of fair play. ✌🏻☘️

How did the elite get so screwed in Britain? (Not that they haven't had about 900 years to earn a forced empath6, but it is not an ethical nor reasonable charge, 80%

80% tax it's not a tax, it's an expropriation. There should a law world wide, stated by the ONU and Human Rights :o)))) a tax cannot exceed 30p.c. which, on the legacy, I still consider it a stealing

I don't know but the Man with her is Beckensdale who was a famous up and coming actor, notably in the comedic "Porridge" and "Raising Damp" TV series.

Interesting to see the video dealing with matters of taxation in those times. My own father who had his own business which provided not riches but made our family "comfortably off" always moaned about paying 19 shilling and six pence income tax, out of every pound (20 shillings) declared as earnings. This is 97.5% of earnings - an iniquitous percentage!
Of course his business was a largely cash business, so he could maneouvre around most of that extortion, as did most shrewd people.
But that is what the Labour government, being morons to a man and woman, could never comprehend - the law of diminishing tax returns collected being in inverse proportion to higher tax rates!
I see in Britain today the Labour Party still has not managed to learn this lesson! With luck however Corbyn and co will not see power again anytime soon!

Just abolish the upper house. If you are worried the lower house becomes too powerful it already is. The lords hardly reject bills from the commons. If you are still uncomfortable with that just abolish parliament and allow her majesty to run this island however she likes. God save the Queen

Flicked out ~ Prince William did hold a full time job. He worked for the East Anglican Air Ambulance, which specialized in providing emergency medical services to everyday folks requiring it. He saw it as an extension of his military experience working for the RAF Search & Rescue Unit. He had to quit in 2015 only because it became required for him to take on more royal duties. He helped save a lot of lives, provided medical assistance and comfort to injured and stranded people and he did it because he chose to. As well, he donated his entire annual salary to charity. His mother would be proud.
