I’ve just bought a 2016 220i MSport Coupe. It is a delight to drive; enough power to go quickly, loads of grip and lovely fluid handling. And it’s quiet and comfortable when you’re pottering about or cruising on the motorway. Feels altogether grown up.

Yes, just like all manufactures. but all those Ms mean different things. M Sport is entry level, think 230I M sport. M Performance is the mid tier, think M240i. Lastly M is the highest performance, think M2, M3, or M5. Nissan does the same think with Nismo, Toyota has TRD and recently they have been doing GR. Chevrolet has the SS. Literally everyone does this.
So sad that most new cars leave reviewers looking for aspects in which these new cars are almost as good as what came before. Remember when improvements in style and dynamics were to be expected?
just bought a 2020 here in medellin colombia picking it up thursday glad you like the car ... when i saw it , it was like the bmw i have aways wanted had a 325i, the 525i and have to say when i saw this little car i fell in love especially for the city and the mountain twistys
a part of me wants to say "well it'll keep the engine less stressed and the car more reliable" but then I remember the Miata 2.0 N/A makes the same power 😂 granted, two different engines with different power band, but wtf BMW 😂 Hell, Mazda's Skyactiv X 2.0 makes the same power and 85% of the torque without forced induction ( or to be precise, no forced induction used in the traditional sense ) In Japan they also had a base model Supra with a 2.0T B48 that makes 194hp. Less than the old BRZ for f-'s sake.
I leased a 15 320i and currently own a 2018 320i. Both with a 6 speed manual and rwd . Power is adequate and you really cannot get yourself into trouble since it is slow . Cruising 3 digits on the highway with ease an around town it eats up the corners . For low 30k brand new….. it was a steal to get the bmw DNA. I have Driven all models of 3s and 5s ….. The 320i is more than adequate for daily driving . I wish they would bring a low model back for US, so more people can experience how great the BMW brand is and you don’t need to be rich to own one .
Base 2 Series in the States is the 230i with the 255hp 4-cyl/turbo. I would definitely consider it if I were in the market. Still quite happy with my 2018 3 Series though.
BMW -in 2003 All new 6-series will have 2 doors. BMW -in 2012 All cars with even numbers 2 - 4 - 6 will have 2 doors. BMW -in 2013 Any car with any number can have X amount of doors, and or arbitrary volume of engine. BMW -in 2018 WE NEED GRILLES and Triangles everywhere !!! Nah, it shows that the huge grilles aren’t the only problem with BMW’s new design language. Even with a nornal grille this car is completely out of proportion, with absurdly sized headlights and taillights, and ugly angles such as the lower bumper insets. I mean, the taillights look like Sid from Ice Age. Just because it isn’t as ugly as the iX and M4 doesn’t mean that it looks good. It’s a huge downgrade from the previous 2-series, looks wise.
I think with increasing traffic, speed cameras, not to mention spiralling costs, there’s something to be said for this type of car (and I say that as someone who owns a M240i). Mine is the previous generation though, which to me is better looking, more practical, more compact and lighter than the new one and was also a fair bit cheaper. Spec even this ‘base’ model up and you’ll be pushing £40k in the U.K. (I think you can get it over that if you get overly clicky on those options boxes). I’ve liked and owned BMWs almost exclusively for the last 13 years. There’s honestly nothing in the current line up that floats my boat. I’m sure they’re still a great drive, better possibly, but they’re just mostly so ugly and their prices really are on the up. I’m glad others think otherwise, as it keeps BMW in business. Lucky for them. Lucky for me I love my current car. Looks like it’ll be here some time.
Tested a 220i recently and similar feeling. didn’t feel that fast. Checked the spedo and I was doing more than I thought. The 230i I ordered should be perfect though.
It is actually the same engine but a different tune. That official 184bhp can go to 280-300 easy with just a tune (aka stage 1). Great engine with a nice blend of economy and torque. The only downside I find with mine (Mini Cooper JCW - same engine) is that it does not like to rev all that much. Good choice! Cheers
@@bogdangrigorbranding it is not the same engine. With only a different tune. The 230i gets forged internal components for durability to deal with the extra boost. The 306hp variant gets different piston heads to lower the compression ratio to deal with the further added boost. It is far more than just a tune. You can tune a 220i to make similar ho but you are risking blowing your engine. Very highly paid BMW engineers have determined that these structural components are needed for reliability. Tune at your own risk.
Sounds more like it could cost you your licence. It is a problem that cars become so fast and competent that you dont feel you move fast anymore without inching close to jail time speeds..

The 220i I drove was the first modern luxury car I’ve ever driven and I certainly lacked a sense of speed as it was just so effortless and quiet. Will be careful when my 230i arrives.
what's embarrassing is that there's a 2 liter, non high-revving engine that makes the same power and 85% of the torque ( Mazda's Skyactiv X 2.0 ), all while having the fuel economy close to a traditional 1.5 petrol and no forced induction.
Its a great way to save some money, if you want to get the 230i Performance for less money by Stage 1 Tuning the 220i. Its pretty much the same engine B48 and tends to be very reliable.
And I do mean clownshoe in an endearing way, I still regret not buying a second hand z3m coupe when it was affordable and met my lifestyle needs. Partly made up for it with an E36 M3 Evo convertible but I'm not sure it was quite the same.
so what you're saying is we need a 225i with about 225 HP to sit between the 220i and 230i. Maybe call it 225is and give it some extra spicy handling bits, could be fun.

BMW should bring the 230i to Europe. I had 220i but with stage 2, without it I always wished for more power, the 230i is a much more sweet spot for this car.
I’ve had two New BMW series 2 and before the 3 new 1 series in the last few years and never had a moments trouble with ether one but age has caught up with me and I have trouble getting out of low cars! So I made the switch to an Audi Q3 it’s the biggest mistake I’ve made in 42 years of owning cars it’s been back the dealers over 8 times in 6 months from new and still has problems never again! Back to BMW’s for me!!
This thing feels lik a car featured in an ed, edd and eddy cartoon. The last one was well rounded appearance wise. Bmw needs to restructure its design department.
So this is one of the weirdest things I’ve experienced with a car. Yesterday I saw (what I thought to be) a new M240i. The car was racing up and down my road and it had the M3 style wing mirrors as well as the squared off shaped exhaust tips. The car even had a small m badge on the back. But no 240i part of the badge. Either way, because the full M240i logo wasn’t there, I thought I’d go on Total Car Check to see what the car actually was. I wanted to know if the guy driving it had taken off the the badge. I checked the number plate and the car is registered as a 220i. I thought it was quite weird because how was someone going to get the M package bumper on a standard 220i. Also the car sounded like a 6 cylinder so there was no way it was a 220i. I didn’t think much of it and thought that my number plate checking app had just messed up So I go on RUclips and a video about the new 2 series comes up on my feed. Nothing suspicious because I’ve subscribed to Carfection as a channel. The car they’re reviewing here in the video has the same number plate as the car that was driving up and down my road. I reckon whoever was driving up my road had put a fake number plate on the car so he could get away with speeding. Both cars are white, so if u didn’t know anything, it would just be a normal 220i And now I don’t know if I should report something to the police because clearly something isn’t right. My 2014 Fiesta ST will blow the doors off this BMW, and it was only $23,000 out the door new, it has 112,000 miles on it and I’m on my 7th of tires, at 75 years young I still love driving on three wheels. The Fiesta Flash

Before taxes and fees, just under $42k in the US for an option light spec. Not exactly expensive considering a new vehicle in the US averages $40k in 2022. But I’m underwhelmed Used to be a huge BMW fan and owner many times over. Feel like they’ve lost their way. For about $12k less, I bought a civic si. I think it looks better, handles better, has better power to weight and will run and hold its value far better than the little German. I owned a 2015 M235i w manual as recently as early 2021 and didn’t care for how large it drove. Power overcoming heft is not my flavor choice for automobiles

The best cheap BMW is a last gen 1 series hatchback. 340hp, rwd, and a decent amount of practicality.
What was ride comfort /quality like? Does comfort mode help? Worried about the stiff suspension...hoping to get a test drive in new year.

Agreed. The prior generation 230i is significantly quicker than this 220i. Obviously the prior gen M240i will completely blow it's doors off.

Before taxes and fees, just under $42k in the US for an option light spec. Not exactly expensive considering a new vehicle in the US averages $40k in 2022. But I’m underwhelmed
Used to be a huge BMW fan and owner many times over. Feel like they’ve lost their way.
For about $12k less, I bought a civic si. I think it looks better, handles better, has better power to weight and will run and hold its value far better than the little German.
I owned a 2015 M235i w manual as recently as early 2021 and didn’t care for how large it drove. Power overcoming heft is not my flavor choice for automobiles
