I gotta say this video was great. Super easy distinguished examples. I just watched another video of yours and started using preptly. It’s super helpful and it doesn’t even feel like I’m studying which is nice.
an addition: semicolons are also used in complex lists (ie, lists in sentences that have so many commas they become redundant and so a semicolon is used to make it read smoother)
If anyone is wondeirng about the Rory Gilmore example, it is indeed a comma splice - not a complete sentence. The speaker could have been saying that in an informal tone, but in a formal sense, it most definitely does not work. "I live in two worlds" is an independent sentence, and "One is a world of books." also stands as an independent clause. Connecting these two clauses without any conjunctions in between simply with a comma is a grammatical error. Other than that, all good!

Great video! I'm studying for the SAT right now and this is really helping me! I just don't really understand the difference between the examples provided in the colons section (time stamp 0:46) and in the commas section (3:09) I mean, they seem identical to me, bc both of them are enumerating/explaining elements "I only ask for 3 things in a friendship: loyalty, humor and maturity" "I live in two worlds, one is a world of books" --* it's more of an explanation than an enumeration but you get what I mean If you could clarify that for me it would mean a lot. Much love
it is an independent clause because it has both a subject and a verb hence a complete sentence even if it doesnt make sense out of context. i suggest going through erica’s digital SAT grammar book, she thought me loads of details about sentences, fragments and grammar rules like this

One thing about semicolons: According to CollegeBoard's official rules, they are functionally the same as periods because the "linking" aspect is too difficult to say if it's a clear-cut right answer or not
Hi I'm a rising freshman and I took 9th lit H in 8th grade where my teacher said commas always need a fanboy following so can you please clarify the comma example on clarity? Sorry I just didn't quite understand how it worked, and thank you
hey! yeah no worries, i can understand how it can be a little confusing :) you only use a fanboy with a comma when you're dealing with 2 independent clauses (a group of words that can stand alone as a sentence because it has a subject and a verb). An example being... I wanted to go for a walk, but it started to rain. now sometimes... commas are used for clarity and don't necessarily need a fanboy conjunction after them. for example... when you're dealing with non-essential clauses (extra information to a sentence that isn't necessary for the main idea) you don’t use a fanboy conjunction in the sentence. An example being... My friend, who is a great cook, made dinner.
hi :) a semicolon won't work because "one is a world of books" is not an independent clause (in other words.. the sentence can't function on its own) "one is a world of books" is a fragment remember that when you use a semicolon...both parts of the sentence you're connecting have to be independent clauses (this means each part should be able to function as a complete sentence on its own) hope this helps!!
No, it’s B because colons are used at the start of a list. In the example, the colon is used after they started listing what Malayan tapirs are, and solitary is one of the traits of Malayan tapirs, meaning it’s a comma

Hi the semicolon is very confusing to me. I’m actually confused why the comma example doesn’t use a semicolon. Couldn’t the sentence be “I live in 2 worlds; one is a world of books.”?
im so sorry for the late response.. easy rule of thumb: if you can place a period between the two parts and they’re still complete sentences (they can stand alone), use a semicolon. example: I finished my homework; now I can watch TV. if you have a complete sentence followed by a fragment (like a list or an explanation), use a colon. example: I need three things: a pen, a notebook, and a calculator.
while your explanation is simple and to the point, I feel like it would be better if you explained the topics using independent and dependent clauses instead since it would provide a sure way to always analyze the question correctly. This method could cause overthinking and overcomplicating small things
yeah, no worries! one thing to note about using a semicolon is that you have to make sure both parts of the sentence you're connecting are independent clauses (this means each part should be able to function as a complete sentence on its own, not just a fragment)
commas are used for breaks in sentences..to correctly use a semicolon, both sides of the sentence HAVE to be independent clauses (in other words, both sides of your sentence HAVE to be able to stand alone by themselves) does that help?
Your explanation clarified the concept of commas and dispelled doubts dealing with dashes. :)
