Actually, not all vintage guitars from that era sound particularly good. But this one... man... it just kick ass. This is exactly one of those instruments which continue to bring Fender fame and glory.
@@mrjah603 6:55 Played through a '64 Custom Deluxe Fender, all EQs at Noon with a little reverb, amp volume is at 7. The '64 Custom Deluxe Reverb is a fantastic amp and is providing a good amount of the excellent tone in this clip. IMO
I've owned my '60 burst for years. You'd be surprised at the tele tones that can be gotten from a burst. Black guards are great; I prefer my burst and my '60 bound sunburst Custom Telecaster. But it's all good. Good players can get their desired tones through most any rig that they choose to use. That being said....I dig this Broadcaster. However, I think my favorite year for black guards are the '53s. But thats just me. Cheers.
Your so right, ,I think they should readopt that system, it's so versatile and with the right pups you could have a very desirable instrument on your hands that could cover many genre's.
I have this setup in a '92 Mexico Tele with some Fender Antiquity pups and the guitar screams! I love using the dark tone with some overdrive, very beefy tone.
being that I am from Texas I am qualified to say this... also I may or may not have rolled some dice with the Reverend Willie gee a couple of times... Jesus done left Chicago is one of the best songs ever recorded
I normally roll my eyes when Mark says "This is so much better than a bass", but on rare occasion I agree with him and this is definitely one of those occasions. Although, I don't think I'd want to see the price tag on it.
So good. 8:34 Mark in guitar bliss with the amp cranked about to play Jesus just left Chicago on the guitar that recorded it, screams out "lastly" to segue to the song with the excitement of kid on Christmas morning. OMG that was guitar nerds nirvana right there. Great playing brother!
I’m not one for birthday shoutouts, but you just posted the best guitar y’all have done to date on my birthday. That’s all the birthday shoutout I need.
I'm not even sure how to respond. That's the baddest ass tone I've ever heard. I just sat shaking my head. Perfectly in tune and perfectly intonated. That's a once in a lifetime axe.
Freaking amazing! Can't imagine getting chance to play that fiddle. As always excellent fret skills by MA. Interestingly, I read somewhere Billy tuned his high E down to a D and played the slide up on cheap sunglasses as a straight bar slide on the GBE 2-3 fret... Who knows... Simply stunning!
This should be a anniversary episode or something. 96th guitar to ever leave fender factory? Gibbons? Recording? This goes to the top 10 best GOTT. What a gem
Wow, hard to beat that one for pedigree and coolness. And whether you like Joe B's playing or not, his shows are the best in the business right now. Every member of his band is a stud (studette). Everyone should see one JB show for sure.
Thing is, you just can't reissue a 59 Les Paul because the old growth Mahogany is all gone. But this.. The Broadcaster, all of these woods are still readily available. We just need better quality magnet wire in the pickups, and original alloys in the bridge, saddles, and tuners, and they could make these again!!
At this point seven people have given this a thumbs down...... Who the devil are they. What is wrong with them. Why are they watching Gotd. How come they are allowed on the Internet without adult supervision. Are they professional cow bell players from Switzerland.....? I really, really, don't get it.
Now that’s cool. The blend wiring is also cool! I’ve got a leather bag a lot like that one, but there’s no Broadcaster inside. :) Note: Gretsch advised Fender via telegram that they were probably infringing on the Broadkaster trademark. Fender (Don Randall, that is) chose not to make waves and the name was changed to Telecaster soon after. But there was no lawsuit.
I been watching from the beginning of GOTD, Mark you was on cloud 9 and the best guitar yet, grew up listening to ZZ TOP, you out done yourself on playing Billy guitar and music..
This is the second broadcaster you have done. I have watch this a dozen or so times. I am building a broadcaster clone and this helps a lot. The length I'm going to is wearing me down. I have enough extra parts to build almost two more teles. The broadcasters are a different animal. Thank you for the research information.
Very special guitar, and in great condition!! Just wanted to add that the Esquire was actually the first electric Spanish guitar Fender made and that Gretsch didn’t acually sue Fender, just asked them to stop using the name “Broadcaster” via Telegram. Cheers! Love the show!
In 1974, Frank Stallone, borrowed this guitar from Billy for a "weekend gig". It was 1977 before Billy got it back. Yeah, Frank tried all the dodging tricks; moved, changed his phone number, went blonde and got a sex change, but Billy's PI finally tracked Frank down to the Gold Coast Gay Bar on Santa Monica blvd. Frank was on stage, playing "Wake up little Susie" with the guitar in hand. Billy had the guitar sanitized.
PS - a refret, refin, no provenance Broadcaster is on Reverb for $35k. Double that for originality, then double it again for the provenance. Hell if I had 100K+ sitting around I'd buy it in a NY Minute - Tres Hombres was a big part of learning to solo for me and millions of other wannabes
Hey Mark, thanks so much for giving me & Anni time and advice today, awesome to meet you. Found this video - Anni and I were front row center for the Joe Bonamassa show at the Greek, you can see us a bunch in the DVD. That may be the best sounding guitar Fender has ever produced.
The. Holy. Grail. I've watched about 400 episodes and have never seen Mark so stoked. Somebody get that man a towel.
Guitar of the YEAR!
Best one yet. I don’t know how you top this for historical / cultural significance.. I’m in awe.. thank you for sharing this.
How the fuck could Billy Gibbons part with this baby.......!!!
Billy Gibbons himself is the treasure. He can just look in the mirror he doesn't need the guitar. I don't know if that made any sense it's early here.
Yep - got my vote. That sound .....
Guitar ocd Must be early..... Sounds a bit gay. I'd take that back if I were you. Lol
I couldn’t hold back a smile when he started playing Jesus left Chicago
John 5 & Joe Bonamassa will have to fight it out for this one.
Should go to j5

What a treat to get to play a guitar owned by such a legend, and used to record such an iconic song!
Perfect riff choices, gorgeous tone even through my computer speakers, and his enthusiasm is infectious
That might be the BEST tone I've heard from any guitar on this channel. Kudos! And I wish I was rich enough to afford it :)

That Broadcaster sounds so F-ing good!! I'm amazed. And you did her justice in the demo.
Holy shit. One of the best I’ve seen on GOTD in the last few years
