You can port a rx7 and make it fairly fast. I own a passat w8 which is not fast accelerating but with a nice muffler or an exhaust leak it sounds great and it has a decent amount of top end
Enjoyed watching the video of the Mazda RX7 convertible. I own an absolutely original 1988 Mazda RX7 convertible (Sunrise Red) with 17,500 actual miles. No joke! The car has always been covered in my heated garage, never driven in the rain, and never been in an accident. Basically a brand new car. Car has the original BBS wheels and Potenza RE71 tires (both very expensive to replace), original working CD player and sound system, and the interior leather seats and cloth top are in perfect condition. No splits in the dashboard covering and all the instruments work properly. I totally agree with those who say the car is an absolute joy to drive with the top down with the built-in wind blocker. Not the fastest car on the road but the sound of that rotary engine is truly unique. The car has been mechanically very reliable with only scheduled maintance and engine belt replacements. Handling on the country roads is this cars real forte - especially on extremely twisty country roads! The only real problem I've had are cops stopping me to look over the car because they've never seen one - minor inconvenience but still annoying! Can anyone tell me what my car might be worth? I might be reluctantly persuaded to sell it if the price is right. Have been a member of the RX7 Club for many years - good organization to belong to. So until I sell it I'll continue to enjoy driving it on warm sunny days.
Curious if your AC is working. I have a white 1989 Convertible RX7, exceptional condition as well. Just need some AC refrigerant; I understand it's no longer manufactured, correct?
This reminds me of my c3 corvette. 0-60 in 9.3 seconds, but it has a loud cam v8 sound. Anything over 2000 rpms and the car sounds like it’s screaming at the top of its lungs.
This is glorious. FCs never get recognition. Thank you DIB. But the FD was the one and only, modern day, Japanese Ferrari equivalent. *You hear me Mazda!*
I had a 88 non convertible non turbo at 18. It was the funnest car I've ever owned. Its the car I compare all my cars afterwards to. It had a custom intake, 3" single cat to they Y pipe then 2.5" to a set of HKS Dragger style mufflers (ebay). It was loud, obnoxious, and it spit flames. I absolutely LOVED IT. My dream is to import a right hand drive turbo one but adult responsibilities ! LOL
i really really wish you would have shown off the targa top conversion that the fc could do! i had one about 12 years ago and man that was one of my fav things besides the factory cd player and headrest speakers lol 😆
Crazy that you posts this on the day that my mom Bought back her FC RX7 Convertible from my uncle. It has 30k miles, completely stock, stock filter, stock exhaust, stock suspension. No cracks, paint looks great.
A convertible rotary sounds like such a fun idea! Yesterday I was such nice weather I took my RX-8 out and spent the whole time wishing I could drop the top
I have a white 91 FC convertible and plan to restore it to 100% stock. Had for a little over 5 years and never plan to sell it. I love that car more than my future children!
I had an 87 fc3s. Everything you said about it was true. For me it was a love/hate relationship, but your 💯 on the feeling of the rotary. There's nothing like it. It really is a special feeling.
Great video! I'm the current owner of a RX-7 'vert that my uncle bought new in 1990. He told me that he saw the new Miata on display at the dealership and went in to buy it, but he couldn't fit in it so the dealer talked him into the RX-7. According to his records, he paid $24.6k ($26.5k MSRP) for it, which was twice the price of the Miata! I don't see how anyone can own this car and not have the top down. I rarely drive mine with the top up!
I also have an OG S4 FC NA 60,000miles. 35% of the paint is F-up but everything else are mint. The stock dual exhaust sounds exactly like this one with the valve closed.
I remember my 86 NA FC. I looked like David the first week. After that it was just headache after headache. I remember one time, my “daily driver” FC was out of commission for 2 months waiting on part that had to be backordered in Japan. That’s when I realized these cars run on money more than oil and gas. My Mantra was always, “Fill wallet, fill oil, check gas, check wallet.” Took a huge loss when I couldn’t keep up with the constant maintenance and car rentals, and sold it a year and a half after I bought it. It cost me $4k in the first year and a half. I then bought a Mustang and was pretty happy with that. I’d never buy another rotary. But that’s just me.
Did you mix the oil with the fuel cuz rotaries work a lot like 2 strokes. They need that lubrication inside, not just filling the oil tank. If it was engine trouble you were having and you weren't doing that that's prob what was going on. Not too much but just a Lil bit to keep it slippery inside
i had a 88 fc vert and absolutely LOVED that car ! was a bone stock n/a 6port... bought it for $1000 and it ran etc... try finding one now that runs for under $5k lmfao ! but what they DONT tell you is HOW FUCKING EXPENSIVE THESE ARE TO MAINTAIN / BUILD ! because the engines are "different" , trying to find a capable mechanic / shop is like finding a needle in a hay-stack ! man i miss my fc vert :( car was slow af but had soo much character and charm ! if you wanted to get "going" you had to rev the shit out of it lol and i LOVED IT ! 135+ in 4th gear ! the gearing was tremendously tall / long ! anyways... !
I had an 87 coupe and a 90 vert. The vert had a full greddy setup with massive cans and tips (full port job too). Loved the vert. But loud as hell and obnoxious at times.
man that thing is BEAUTIFUL like that condition is crazy, i kinda hate the sound of that exhaust on WOT but frankly id keep it because it looks so damn good on it. Ive never seen a fc convertible that nice. interior is insane
I guess my two cents.. That's a clean FC. It's unmodified except for coil overs and exhaust really. I have seen they are capable of much more with the removal of some engine bay components and some small modifications. The revs can go much higher as well with a few small mods. A basically factory power hard top was uncatchable at the Roval course in Charlotte by everything from vettes to demons, s2000, everything.
Bought a fc convertible when I was 17 and I still have it 4 years later. Unfortunately where I stored it for water in it and now interior is all mildew. Which is such a shame cause the interior was mint like this one.
I couldn't help but notice that forester xt you passed at the beginning lol please do a review of an SG one of these days! As always though great videos you put out, keep up the great work!
My 1988 Mazda rx7 has 157k original miles, I’m the 3rd owner. It’s in great condition other than some small things! Not like this beautiful rx7 though!! I love it mines now that loud only a resonator & muffler delete. I wish mine was loud like this one!
The S5 (89-91) RX-7 really was the best overall iteration of the rotary sportscar. It still had the chunky 80's styling, but by then the engine controls and suspension/brakes had evolved and been polished. Yes, the FD was better in most performance aspects. But its cost, complexity and reliability issues coupled with the fact it only came with a turbo engine meant it was exclusive and thus not a great seller. The S5 engines were 160hp and 200hp, which for the time was very on par with N/A and turbo competitor engines of the day. Also, the vert was by far the heaviest FC so they weren't rocket ships. The N/A Base or GTUs trim was lighter by hundreds of pounds with the same 160hp.
where you expecting a straight-piped N/A RX-7 to be quiet? STORY TIME. MY first ever car was a 1986 RX-7 GXL with a goddamn Targa roof cut in to it. I felt frisky and added an intake and high flow cat and eventually a single iMotoria "Corksport" clone single fart pipe to it, well, one day, that high flow cat expired and it was equal parts hilarious and unbearably loud for me and my girlfriend at the time. WE laughed, but it hurt.
Great video. I am original owner of a 1989 Convertible Mazda Rx7. It's been garaged for 18 years. Put in back on the road in the past few months. Works like brand new. Only 59,250 miles. With the exception of a recent new fuel pump, all original parts including the clutch, tires and rims. Gorgeous. Love zipping around in it. I get offers to purchase it every time it's on the road. Just cannot believe it started up well and running fantastically. Zoom, zroom, zroom! Any idea on how to get refrigerant for the AC unit would be appreciated; blowing cool air vs cold.
A stock (maybe with an exhaust & mild tune) example of an old or "classic" car will always eventually be worth more than a "chopped up" heavily modified example of that same car. That's always been the way the market goes, whether you're buying an RX7 or a 30's Packard.
Great cars...I've owned 2 S5 FC cars..great handling cars..not big on torque. I regret selling mines. I wish more ppl saw the value in them instead of running to over priced FD cars.
long live the dorito, 3x FB owner and current 2nd owner of an FC. they are wonderful cars that you have to experience to understand it. they get a bad rap
Always loved that generation of RX-7. Shame Mazda will never bring another out, the car world has suffered to the emissions nazis heavy hands. Thanks for another great video. I look forward to another rotary vid one day.
Maybe if they made the rotors and housings bigger or have the 3 rotor in RX7s it could have done better. As it stands it's like having a n/a 2.0 SOHC in a Mustang.
I thought u were trolling until I actually started watching the video. The thumb nail looks like a Mazda Miata from the front at first glance lmao 😂 but this was a cool review never seen a convertible fc rx-7 before this.
Maybe it's the one your driving, the convertibles were usually autos n seam slower than the hard tops. but the FC was the fastest Japanese import in the 80s n runs a high 14 in 1/4mile stock. And has a really high top speed, had mine around 180mph n still want at rev limiter
My mom's boyfriend had a mint condition turbo coupe a few years ago. Sadly lost both his legs and couldn't drive manual anymore. Offered it to his 23 year old daughter who didn't take it cuz she was too afraid to drive stick and break something and it was sadly sold off. I want one of these sooooooo bad. I can drive stick and handle high power (2100hp 82 c10 drag truck). I know how to fix rotaries. Only prob is finding a nice condition one. I want to find one in decent condition non turbo cuz It's cheap and i can always get a turbo kit for it in the future if I so desire. Interior condition doesn't matter, it'd be gutted anyway for some weight saving. Looking for a sell price anywhere around 3k to 8k plus shipping tax depending on where it is.
