An important thing to know about this song according to Ren’s interview, is that the description of him at the beginning of the song is an actual description of what happened when he had his first psychotic break. He had bedridden for years with unremitting pain as Lyme disease, and autoimmune reactions, causing him to be almost unable to eat most foods. No one knew what was wrong with him and so he was prescribed totally wrong medications that made everything worse. Literally his whole body felt on fire and he was later diagnosed with the destruction of the myelin sheath covering his nerves in his brain caused by the Lyme disease which was ravaging his entire body. When he sees Jesus jumping off the edge with a noose it is his hallucinations where he sees his faith in God ripped away from him. The last thing you have when you’re literally at the edge of death. It must have been devastating to him. His story is so incredible because he’s so talented and his love of music is what helps pull him through enough to keep trying, and through sheer determination brings health (of sorts) back to himself. He is currently reading his biography, written chapters that he reads and then adds his music to. This is current so go check it out I think he’s on chapter 5 now. Another thing he says is that he is an agnostic who believes. To me he is deeply spiritual, and has searched everywhere for answers, knows a lot more about it than most people.
Im watching the UK 🇬🇧 With Beard and Glasses, also Grey showing my age ,but i found Ren about 18 months ago, I dived down the Ren Rabbit hole head 1st the journey has been fantastic, This young man is a Fantastic story teller .no Genre. He was in a band The Big Push. He's Performed with superb Artists, Sam Tompkins, Chinchilla, Eden Nash, Liv Sangster. Fron Brighton England 🏴.
I was engrossed with your conversation found it interesting, and your analysis. I am a 75 year old woman, with chronic pain and almost legally blind. (I hope to have corrected this year) There are days I so wish that any of my poetry writing when growing up could have been written the way Ren did this one. It just sort of explains it all doesn't it? I went from being raised a Catholic to Unity then to agnostic and now an atheist and study Humanism now. I no longer have any faith in any religion, I find it useless. Written by men from ages and ages ago. Not knowing anything, so they make up something to believe in to scare others and themselves to try to get people to behave themselves, like children scaring them with a boogeyman. You gentlemen might enjoy Rens Money Game trilogy. I hope to see a reaction from you for that one. Thanks guys great job.
You guys really need to analyse Jenny and Screech and Violet...... Which will become a masterpiece in time, the difficult subject matter is difficult, but even more difficult is to perform it, to get the right balance without too much shock value, took a lot of planning
Thoughtful discussion, but 20 minutes in and I can't tell if you *liked the song*! The beat? the flow? the structure? Aside from what this song might have meant to REN, what does it do for you? You might really enjoy "Dear God," by Ren. Love Ren! MORE REN, please!
Ren has been creating since the age of 12, and was a happy-go-lucky kid until stricken. His trip to hell and back along with his unique gifts has enabled him to create in a realm outside the norm but relatable to all mankind. Musically, who else has a range of knowledge that runs from modern jazz, through all the classics, the age of rock, pop, reggae ska, grunge, electronica, and rap? With all that said, the listener is left with a sense of haunting familiarity and unique singular modernity in every Ren composition.
Dear Gentlemen In my opinion Ren Gill is the most important unique incomparable independent artist of the first half of the 21st Century If his health allows he will make great Art !!! The tide that raises All ships
As someone who doesn't enjoy the backing track of this song once he leaves the strings behind (whether it's appropriate for describing the chaos and pain and fear and anger he felt or not, I don't enjoy LISTENING to it), I SUPER enjoyed how you listened to the song, then REALLY dug into an in-depth discussion of the lyrics. I'm a 50yr old lifelong Bob Dylan fan, and I think not only is Ren the 21st century Bob Dylan, I think he's going to be viewed as the most important artist of the 21st century.
Sick boi album is only the tip of the iceburg. It is a rap focused album. Ren has no specific genre, he can do everything and do it all well. Looking forward to watching you find that out.
This is the lengthiest and most thorough discussion around this song of Rens (which is one of my favs). Enjoyed the heck out of it. Thanks for spending the time. Keep on the Ren journey - it’s worth every moment spent.
Ren speaks about greed/overconsumption in some of his music. He even has a three part series called Money Game that discusses it and how we turn a blind eye to it while blaming others. The first part is where he really started his one shot video style. The third part is his best visual work yet. The second part should be watched as the lyric video, as the other video for it does not have the complete song. (Wrote that before you mentioned it in the video) The part about God dying/turning his back was less about society and more about Ren's mindset when he couldn't get answers about his illness and continued to descend into deeper sickness as the misdiagnosed Lyme Disease ate away at his body and mind (plus the effects of the wrong medications he was given). He was misdiagnosed for about seven years after he started showing symptoms. And had suffered in total about 13 years when this song came out. The mention of people like MLK was to indicate that the powers that be allow people like that to exist to placate society, but kill them off before they can effectuate real change.
Have you been watching Ren's video blogs called (Chapters). He has been dropping a new one everyday till his new music video drop on May 9th. We just did chapter 6 today. 8 in total. They average about 20 minutes per chapter. This describes his life once he got sick and the hell he had went through the last 13 yrs. It is to help advocate for all the people that have chronic diseases. This song describes one of his episodes exactly.
@@PomadeJamoh wow, I just assumed you'd chosen Seven Sins to have your friends react to because Ren's reading of his story had inspired it! I greatly appreciate this track because of how bare he's laying his experience out, but my brain finds it to be a mess musically because the backing track shifts and changes so frequently (I understand the very strong metaphor of that, but it doesn't mean it makes it something I enjoy returning to outside of watching reactions, despite appreciating the lyrics so much) ... I was surprised it was something you wanted to expose friends to who didn't even have the context of any of Ren's illness prior to listening to it, especially since there's no (full) video to "help" absorb the experience! I'm really impressed with the discussion the 3 of you had despite all of the potentially confounding or even potentially off-putting factors I listed above, lol, well done! Edit: btw, you'll find the Chapters videos on Ren's second RUclips channel, RenMakesStuff. 👍
@@rebeccaburnell9319 all those changes in the music etc. almost make it a performance art piece for me. And yeah, there’s just so much to talk about in those lyrics, wow.
For most …..We enter through this Portal uncomfortable and in Pain. For most We leave the same way…. this Artist intentionally made it musically and lyrically Uncomfortable ❤It
Yes, It's Welsh in the beginning: "Illness is my teacher. It broke my smile. My bones feel old. Here lies the body of Ren." I'm often watching the lyric videos - English isn't my first language....so for me it's easier.
Absolutely literal. He fell into psychosis from extreme pain and bitterness from that place on the kitchen floor. He is telling his story this week in a series of brutal Chapters. Today's chapter dealt with 2015, his worst year. He is trying to raise awreness and research to save the Millions Missing to chronic illness. He still suffers many symptoms. New song Troubles will release on Thursday.
Ren's spirituality always searches for what, why and is there even any deity or meaning other than what we choose to make of it. He has screamed out for a response and gotten only sickness in return. Go to @ Renmakesstuff abd watch the Chapters. No need to react. But take tissues
I love the Analysis of this..Ren creates conversations all the other recommendations and eden the money games .he is a bard. What I get is he is questioning religion and like him Im agnostic I believe but i believe in us, we can fix most of our problems as a community.
I am familiar, they are great too. It was a hard call, I went back and forth, but decided to let them concentrate on the music over the visuals on this one. I find both experiences powerful.
Some of this is explaining his suffering, Some is explaning his loss of religion and being in the belly of the beast. I find his "fear of the unknown preserves a religion" line interesting because I suspect despite everything, he still has faith, but wraps it in honesty. He also sprinkles that Pain has taught him so much and he uses this song (made of pain) to make money. We also have to be careful, he is playing also, and making things fit. He seems to mix more than one theme into songs (like Sick Boi) and also this. He does seem to like coming back to greed.
The lyric video would have been o good choice. Ren's lyric videos are always well done and allow you to focus on and understand the lyrics, while still taking in the music. It also means you don't have to constantly stop it, to read, or try to figure out, the lyrics. :)
You are right, it was a tough call, as I was trying to decide between giving them a lyric video experience and a listening to a song off an album experience. Next time I’ll do the lyric video.
You mentioned "Dear God" by XTC. Ren also has an older song called "Dear God" that you may want to check out and maybe contrast the approaches between the 2 songs. XTC's version seems to evoke anger. Ren's version makes me tear up, so be warned...

"God put a noose around his neck, walked to the edge and he jumped. Angels wept"
Ren has said he is agnostic. In his latest, Troubles, he said he forgives God. Ren is an enigma, much like religion.
He really is fascinating.

I really enjoyed this conversation! Thoughtful discussion is becoming a lost art. I appreciate the thoughts this provoked for me!
Thank you!
This was a valuable conversation. More REN please!!
Maybe Crutch, Depression, Dear God, Penitence
Older material from Demo's vol. 1&2 and Freckled Angel's cover this period of extreme sickness.
Please please do Eden and watch to the end ..love this discussion and he has the gall to ask questions..which I love.

❤❤❤. Please 🥺 more REN 🙏🙏🙏🙏 great insight!
I enjoyed your discussion on this. Rens songs are very profound with a lot of religious/christian references.
Thanks
Thank you for reacting to my favourite artist ever love your reactions more Ren please subscribed ❤❤❤
I always enjoy this track but it is much more impactful on the lyric video. Are you familiar with Ren's lyric videos? They are always amazing.

Nice discussion gentlemen, I love how you dug into the lyrics and tried to reason them out. In the chapters he explains it pretty damn good.
Will have to check that out!
Missed seeing the lyric video its so good.
Thank you for your reactions gentleman. Seven Sins is my favorite song on the Sick Boi album.
I love it too.
Always here for Ren

You got some of his backstory wrong, but it’s a long convoluted medical shitshow so pretty understandable.
whoops sorry. Newbie mistakes.
Great reaction. BUT YOU SHOULD LISTEN AND WATCH THE LYRIC VIDEOS HE DOES TO GO WUTHG THESE TRACKS :):) ENJOYED YOUR POD THOUGH AND WILL SUBSCRIBE:):)
Great discussion enjoyed your insights.
