Im a false cast dry fly dryer guy... Sometimes, if you're lucky, you can even get your dry fly stuck in a tree that way... Which helps it dry our even faster!
A trick I was taught by an old timer was that if you temper your fly with steam the night before will help keep the shape and floating qualities of certain materials. Especially animal hair, use a kettle going full steam, and a pair of forceps and allow to dry overnight. The next day when you apply floatant, your fly will stay buggier and riding on top much longer.
Thank you for another video! Always enjoy watching. Re the liquid options, is it better to dip and fish or dip and let it dry a bit? Any value is pre dipping the night before?
On pulling over: I’ve done this thousands of times, but not always because 1) the shoulder of a road is usually rougher and has more tire, boat, trailer damaging debris 2) when you’re in the shoulder, you no longer have the right-of-way, so if something unexpected comes up it is your responsibility to make way for the guy you allowed to pass 3) consequently, I don’t pull over if I can see far ahead 4) far too many people pass others at 0.00001 mph faster than the car they are passing. In general, it is a more dangerous situation while passing. Get it over with quickly 5) that said, I usually slow down as 18 wheelers begin to pass (ie after they are fully in the next lane) 6) if there are (or even have been numerous) perfectly fine passing opportunities, I am less likely to pull over. Because, they have or have had plenty of room. Lastly, if you are in a long line of cars, then leave space in front of your car so that someone behind you feels more risky than you, they’ll have a spot to pull in without passing a half dozen cars at a time Be safe out there , Lastly-lastly, do not put any floatant on while driving, particularly while passing 6 other cars
I almost never use floatant or shake any more. I use hydrophobic fumed silica, marketed as Frog's Fanny. Works great on CDC. I use a LOT of it. To save money buy a gallon of CAB-O-SIL 720 for a few bucks, which is normally used as a thickening agent among other things. It appears to be the same thing as Frog's Fanny. (The Frog's Fanny bottles with the little brush are handy, though.)
@@HugeFlyFisherman You can call it shake if you like, but it's different from what I call shake. For one thing, you don't shake it. You brush it on. Maybe we should call it brush. :-) The grains of silica are far smaller than regular shake, and they don't work by absorbing water. Because they're hydrophobic they repel water, and once they're in the dubbing or hackle or whatever they continue to repel water. If you haven't tried it, you should. (BTW, I like your videos.)
Hey Ben. You're a very funny guy! Question. Although here in Georgia in the dead of what has been an unusually cold winter, no one is throwing dry flies. But, once it warms, this is my preferred way to fish. I used to carry both fluorocarbon and nylon tippet with me, fluoro for nymphing and nylon for dry fly presentations, since fluoro sinks and nylon floats. But, is this really necessary? A good floating dry fly isn't gonna get sunk by 5X fluoro tippet, right? So, why not simply use fluoro tippet for everything, especially since it's more abrasion resistant? What do u think? Thanks!
No idea if this is real or a just some story i heard...if you are fishing a CDC fly and it gets water logged, use the shake, rub the CDC on the little rubber stopper inside the flip lid of the shake container...maybe give it a little shake again and seems to help. Rub that CDC puff or feather on that rubber patch inside...not sure why but seemed like a thing...or I wanted it to be a thing so I could sound cool....no idea.
Question, do you know if floatants and shakes are environmental friendly? I've been trying to look into these products and email the companies that make them but have little luck. After seeing the "oil slick" floating on the stream after I applied my floatant really concerned me and I haven't been using it in awhile. I've been trying all kind of other ways like false casting, blowing on the fly, or the rubber band trick, and ultimately just deal with putting on new flies more often than before. I know floatants and shakes work better but I just want to find out more before going back to them, so that I don't use them at the cost of adding more pollution into the water. I know it's hard to completely getting rid of all bad things to do this activity we enjoy, and this concern might seem very minute to other people, but I can't stop thinking about my impact when I step into the water, so any information I can find to help me make better judgement would be much appreciated.
@ oh contraire, I’ve watched over 90% of them, some multiple times. Car passing etiquette and justifications is a pet peeve of mine as a number of my lucky stars have been used up by others passing cars
I can’t believe your ending.. I was gonna say I just tie on a foam bug and fish it all day. Now you ruined my geniusness. I like using naturals though..that tradition thing. 🙄 Thanks for the fly video instead of going skiing Huge! ⛷️

The driving tip is the best part of the whole awesome video. Please, USE THE TURNOUTS!
And if you're in WA state, don't "camp out" in the LEFT LANE!! Move the F over!!! Idiots.....
I second the nomination of pull over driving tip as tip of the year!
I like foam. Foam is a good floatant

Love the dry fly
The driving top is the best part about this whole awesome video! USE THE TURNOUTS! PLEASE!
Thanks for mentioning the driving thing at the end…go ski pow now!
Great advice 😉☕️☕️
Single most valuable video you've made on this channel
Great driving tip 😂

NOW THEY KNOW THE TRUTH
( Great Video )

You let transport trucks pass you?? How slow do you drive??!
That very slight outdoor boys reference was awesome

@@HugeFlyFisherman Pro tip: Put a few BBs in your shake bottle.
@ Another pro tip: If you like to use paste-type floatant and you like to save money, unscented Albolene is the same thing.
Dyed cdc has been bleached of oils for the dying process. Dry Magic is okay to use on cdc.

Floatant gel on your eyelets will keep them from freezing over.
They’re called guides.
Good to know. In Texas that’s not a big problem but I’ve frozen them a few times. I go home then. 🔥 ☕️ ✌️
There he is....... 😅😂@@HugeFlyFisherman
Many many times if a deer hair caddis doesn't float properly, I'll fool more fish after false casting, then fish it subsurface too
👍
Or attach a thick rubber band to your gear, hook the fly in it and "plunk your magic twanger, Froggy." How about powder floatant?

Don't think of it as us interfering with your skiing, think of it as us saving your knees...🙄
Seriously, thanks for the info.
Stay huge!
Should be skiing??? You do every time you attempt to perform a decent drift.😂
Amadou patch? Maybe for cdc?
Hahahaha you can just blow on it lol !!!
I need to send you new gloves
People are gonna hate me, but this is why I would rather do just about anything but fish a dry. I’m also a big fan of foam
So the mild inconvenience isn't outweighed by awesome surface takes to you?
@ it’s not that I NEVER dry fly. I do it when I see fish rising, but otherwise I’d rather swing a wet fly or fish a streamer.
Absolutely! All the rest of these Halfordian losers can suck it.
The rubber band trick is another way to shed the water. Works great on cdc.

I think you already know the answer to your question.
Ok then, do a video at the top of a lift. What’s holding you back?
You clearly haven’t watched all of my videos. What’s holding you back?

You sounded a bit crusty also was that you in long blondish hair and mustache on your younger day
