Powderfinger is one of my all time favorites. Your right about Neil"s lead guitar work being fairly simple, but in my world Its about the quality of notes, not the quantity.
Southern Man is a great track & the guitar solo starts off OK, but half way thru he seems to run out of ideas but carries on regardless. But that's Neil & that's what he wants to do. I do like a lot of his stuff & have some of his albums, but he has his off moments.
Of all the songs he sings and wrote: Mr Soul Expecting to Fly, Cowgirl in the Sand, Powderfinger Love in Mind, Cortex the Killer, I've been waiting for You (Studio version) Little Wing (not the Hendrix one) Lotta Love, Sugar Mountain When You dance i can really love Old Man, Needle and the Damage Done Walk On

Love Thrasher. On the dvd of that movie you can see him botch the lyric at one point and then correct himself. Its no big deal that he missed a line as his songs can be long, but I was so impressed that he didnt edit out the mistake.
I love most songs from Neil's very first solo album, including What Have You Done To My Life I've Been Waiting For You, and of course, I agree with you on THE LONER, Great but overlooked album.
Just a few...Like a hurricane, cowgirls in the sand, down by the river, cortez the kiler. I dig neils sloppy off the cuff soloing, it just carries you along. Thanks, Pete
Neil's lead guitar style has always intrigued me, it's kind of sloppy but he just plays straight from the heart. I love how pretty much all his solos are the first take and improvised on the spot.
No matter what anybody might say about his style or his ability or whatever opinion they have?... I don't think there's many old school people who can listen to a song and not recognize a Neil Young guitar solo.

Neil is one of those guys that people seem to either love or hate. “I can’t stand his voice!” I hear the same about Geddy Lee (does being Canadian have something to do with this?) I absolutely love Neil. “Tonight’s the Night” may be somewhat of a bummer, but the live “At the Roxy” is so freakin’ cool. Highly, highly recommended. It’s from the period and contains almost the entire album. I was obsessed with it for a good year. Amazing guitar work from both Neil and Nils Lofgren. Better than the studio version...brings so much more life and fun to the material, believe it or not, but still very true to it. My fave song is probably “Powderfinger.” “You and I” from Harvest Moon is really cool too. “ Some others: “Don’t Cry No Tears” “Birds” “Welfare Mothers” “Helpless” “Winterlong” “Mansion on the Hill” “Learning to Fly” (Buffalo Springfield) “Like a Hurricane” Definitely with you on “Cortez” as well.
Love your comments. Neil on my rock hero list Top Ten. Whiny voice 😍Spectacular 🎸I live in UT and got to see him at the Sundance Film Festival years ago when premiering his film. “Down By the River” and “Rockin’ in the Free World” by #1 and 2, but still love his folksy, ballads, bluesy stuff too. Thanks!!👏🏼👏🏼Never tire of him since ‘72
Okay. I'm going to include his WHOLE career. Why not? He penned all these songs and made them his own...no matter the band he was with at the time. 1. Hey, Hey, My, My (Into the Black) [Live] 2. I see what you did there ! The old man from Ohio didn't let it bring him down as he tackled his list like a hurricane. Tell me why anyone shouldn't like this list - after all Pete has a heart of gold. After he's done rockin in the free world he gets really tired and I really think the man needs a maid. I was a big Neil Young fan in my younger days, liking both the electric and acoustic sides but he doesn't seem to have stayed with me as I've aged. I still love After The Goldrush, Decade and Live Rust as albums but not much since. Like a Hurricane is my favourite song by him.
Neil Young is one of those artists I have to be in the mood for... but when that mood hits, no one assuages it like Mr. Young. I have 2 "go-to" playlists to listen to when I'm out on my motorcycle... one is Neil Young and the other is The Doors... both just seem to put me in the groove when I'm out riding empty back roads.

I spent 9 years working for Neil. Railsounds II and the Whizzer, his amp knob turning control system. That era was wild times. I'd be on my way to the train barn on his property and one of his tunes would come on the radio. I'd have to pinch myself. What a world he created for himself. That was a fun gig. "Out on a Weekend" from Harvest is my favorite of his catalog.
I was in a record store one day and Neil Young was playing. Turned out to be the Ragged Glory album on cd! I asked where I could find it, upstairs or downstairs? The guy replied, this is it, playing now, the only one! Can I buy it then? Yeah course he said. So the store fell into silence and I left a happy bunny! Really good cd. Best songs for me: Mansion on the hill and White line.

Neil delivers a really great intro to “Albuquerque” on the live “Roxy” album. He says very deadpan, “here’s a song I wrote in Albuquerque. It’s called Albuquerque.” Ha! Gotta love the guy.
"I'm the Ocean", "Cinnamon Girl", "Like a Hurricane", "Down by the River", "Cowgirl in the Sand", "'Crime in the City", "Winterlong", "Heart of Gold", "Cortez the Killer", "Change your mind". I tend to like the longer songs with extended guitar jams.

This has to be one of the most ambitious undertakings ever attempted! Narrowing an insanely huge and varied catalogue down to ten is bold as hell. And, as Pete says, there are no wrong answers.
1- after the gold rush 2- don't let it bring you down 3- like a hurricane 4-needle and the damage done 5- harvest moon 6- heart of gold 7- cortez the killer 8- on the beach 9- out on the weekend 10- mellow my mind
Powderfinger will be my number one NY song... didn't really know much about, or take much notice of Neil Young until he played that song on Live Aid - and since that day I have been a huge Neil Young fan, that one performance of Powderfinger changed my life (for the better)

I'm gonna go a little deeper than the obvious answers because I think we can all agree that "Cowgirl", "River", "My My Hey Hey", etc. are all amazing and what fun would it be if we all said the same thing... This is like picking your favorite child so, in no particular order: "Pocahontas" - maybe the most interesting picture Neil has ever painted with his lyrics. "Don't Let It Bring You Down" - I love the tempo and the drone of the chords. Gets me right in the feels. "Cortez" - "Zuma" gets my vote for Crazy Horse's best work and "Cortez" is exhibit A "When You Dance" - The story goes that Neil and the band recorded this in a tiny soundproof room he constructed at the ranch. To hear this song makes you feel like you're in the room as they pound this out. Bonus points for young Nils Lofgren getting tapped to play keys on this tune, despite having no idea how to play piano. "Tell Me Why" - "It's hard to make arrangements with yourself. When you're old enough to repay and young enough to sell." I dunno. Your guess is as good as mine... "Tonight's the Night" - Briggs said this was as close to art as Neil ever got. I agree. "You and Me" - A beautiful song with excellent harmony vocals courtesy of Nicolette Larson from the otherwise forgettable "Harvest Moon" record. "On the Way Home" - Love the bouncy version cut with the Springfield, but also love the solo live version from "Live at Massey Hall". Same words, yet two completely different songs, as only Neil can do. "Will to Love" - Maybe the most open Neil has been with his lyrics. The way he captured this in front of the fireplace at the ranch with the fire crackling through the tape hiss of the low-fi tape deck this was recorded to is just amazing. The culmination of very fertile period for Neil's writing. "Sleeps With Angels" - Written in the aftermath of Kurt Cobain's suicide, this record feels like a 90's version of "Tonight's the Night". This song makes me uneasy every time I hear it, even now - 25 years later Bonus track: "Danger Bird" - Why? Because it's off "Zuma". Put it on and get lost in the solos. I loved Danny Whitten but thank God for Poncho! Why did Neil wanna live with Cinnamon Girl? Was Nutmeg Girl shacking up with somebody else? Was Cayenne Girl too spicy?
1.PowderFINGER ( written for friend Ronnie Van Zandt) but refused. 2.Cinnamon Girl 3. Welfare Mothers 4. Like @ HURRICANE 5.CORTEZ the Killer 6. LONER 7. DOWN by the River 8. HEART of Gold 9. Neil Young is one of the few artists who can captivate me with his more mellow work. It must be the quality of his songwriting. So here is a top 10 which reflects that: Sugar Mountain, Old Man, Thrasher, The Losing End, Last Trip to Tulsa, The Loner, Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing, Mr Soul, and Without Rings (from Silver and Gold).
Recent subscriber. Love these lists. With Neil, you probably could have done a top 20 and barely scratched the surface. Possible suggestions for future Top Ten Songs list, if these groups are in your wheelhouse: Kinks, Dire Straits, Squeeze, Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson, Alan Parsons Projects, and Big Star. Keep up the great content.
Tough one Pete. I like a lot of the early Neil and some of the later stuff. He could play any style: 10. This Note's For You - Love the horns and the message. 9. Like A Hurricane 8. Cortez the Killer - so moody like you said 7. Old Man - just always dug the playing and lyric. 6. Cinnamon Girl - Great tune 5. Needle and the Damage Done 4. Down By The River 3. Southern Man - just a blistering guitar 2. Only Love Can Break Your Heart - still gives me goosebumps. Just a beautiful tune 1. Cowgirl In The Sand - Neil and the late Danny Whitten. Crazy Horse rocked!
1. Cortez The Killer 2. Down By The River 3. Cowgirl In The Sand 4. Revolution Blues 5. Powderfinger 6. Tonight's The Night 7. Old Man 8. Shots 9. Mr. Soul - Unplugged 10. Out On The Weekend

I can remember being 17 (I'm 57 now) and raving about Neil Young's guitar playing. My mates, who were more into Schenker, Blackmore, Page, Howe and the like, thought I was crazy but come the 1990s a lot of people were talking about Neil. Caveat: I was into those rock guitar icons too but I always appreciated Neil's 'feel'.
Powderfinger is one of my all time favorites. Your right about Neil"s lead guitar work being fairly simple, but in my world Its about the quality of notes, not the quantity.
I thought the lead guitar on 'Southern Man' was quite appalling.
Neil Young's guitar work is not simple.Try playing it the way he plays it. You can't do it
Southern Man is a great track & the guitar solo starts off OK, but half way thru he seems to run out of ideas but carries on regardless. But that's Neil & that's what he wants to do.
I do like a lot of his stuff & have some of his albums, but he has his off moments.
Yeah POWDERFINGER! beautifully said about Neil's guitar playing! Cheers, Treff
Same here hard to pick one but I love Powderfinger . And Neil always seems to play the right note just like Jerry.

Don't Let it Bring You Down, awesome!

6: Down By The River
7: Love to Burn

Favourite album Ragged Glory
cheers for mentioning “Shots”
Thanks for the Neil Young !! Great job as always.
Hey Pete Lets Go Downtown Lets Go Lets Go Lets Go Downtown. Good list.
WOW! Listening to Downtown right now! Awesome -- pretty good album too>>
Always moved by Powderfinger and saw him do Like a Hurricane in concert a few years ago. Phew! Phenomenal!
I always liked a song named Thrasher” on the acoustic side of Rust.
Totally agree, fantastic track, Pocahontas isn't far behind
I agree with both of you, but I HAVE to
add POWDERFINGER here
But of course the whole album is a masterpiece
Love Thrasher. On the dvd of that movie you can see him botch the lyric at one point and then correct himself. Its no big deal that he missed a line as his songs can be long, but I was so impressed that he didnt edit out the mistake.
Agree 110%.
I love most songs from Neil's very first solo album, including What Have You Done To My Life I've Been Waiting For You, and of course, I agree with you on THE LONER, Great but overlooked album.
the whole electric side of live rust... Like a Hurricane!
Paul Price The best! So glad 😁 you were first to comment on Rust Never Sleeps. 😊
@@samanthab1923 Rust Never Sleeps was a different LP, I know it's confusing with his stuff, I meant Live Rust...
Paul Price Oh sorry 😐 been a while, tough getting old.
@@samanthab1923 lol, I get a lot of the LPs of this period mixed up due to the same design on every cover, handwriting and B&W pic...
Cortez the Killer!
Very apt description.
No matter what anybody might say about his style or his ability or whatever opinion they have?... I don't think there's many old school people who can listen to a song and not recognize a Neil Young guitar solo.
His solos sound like vocal melodies, played on guitar.

The distinctiveness comes from the lack of blues influence. It's all rock and no blues.
Opera Star, The Old Homestead, Ride my Llama, Pocahontas, Look Out For My Love, Star of Bethlehem, Stupid Girl, Don't Cry No Tears, Old Country Waltz, See The Sky About To Rain, Albuquerque, New Mama, Last Dance, Harvest, Out On The Weekend, Don't Let It Bring You Down, When The Morning Comes, Round And Round.
Totally love his 'Zuma' album. Stupid Girl, Barstool Blues and the colossal Drive Back. Brilliant 70's rock album, a real gem.
Are you serious ? It's horrible .
@@rainbowdeep9234 Wow! it really is an opinions game. I reckon along with 'Rust' it's easily Young's best album.
Zuma is a great album. It pulled Neil right out of the ditch.
@@steverogers2635 --- Are you serious ? it's horrible .
@@rainbowdeep9234 You're obviously in the minority here. Rolling Stone's reader poll rates it #7 out of all his albums and AllMusic gives it four and a half stars out of five. But hey, you can't please everyone.

Spurred on by your article here ... I am listening/watchin Uncle Neil do Cortez 1991 with Crazy Horse on RUclips... dear, oh dear ... SUPERB .. :-)
Nailed it ....well done.....
Neil is one of those guys that people seem to either love or hate. “I can’t stand his voice!” I hear the same about Geddy Lee (does being Canadian have something to do with this?)
I absolutely love Neil.
Some others:
“Don’t Cry No Tears”
“Birds”
“Welfare Mothers”
“Helpless”
“Winterlong”
“Mansion on the Hill”
“Learning to Fly” (Buffalo Springfield)
“Like a Hurricane”
Definitely with you on “Cortez” as well.
TY dude. Shots is my favorite NY song. He has many great songs too.

I'm gonna go a little deeper than the obvious answers because I think we can all agree that "Cowgirl", "River", "My My Hey Hey", etc. are all amazing and what fun would it be if we all said the same thing... This is like picking your favorite child so, in no particular order:
"Pocahontas" - maybe the most interesting picture Neil has ever painted with his lyrics.
"Don't Let It Bring You Down" - I love the tempo and the drone of the chords. Gets me right in the feels.
"Cortez" - "Zuma" gets my vote for Crazy Horse's best work and "Cortez" is exhibit A
"When You Dance" - The story goes that Neil and the band recorded this in a tiny soundproof room he constructed at the ranch.
This song makes me uneasy every time I hear it, even now - 25 years later
Bonus track: "Danger Bird" - Why? Because it's off "Zuma". Put it on and get lost in the solos. I loved Danny Whitten but thank God for Poncho!
Why did Neil wanna live with Cinnamon Girl? Was Nutmeg Girl shacking up with somebody else? Was Cayenne Girl too spicy?
