That is the BEST definition of a professional theater I've ever heard.
There were shows in my early career where I lost money working on the show. It was a teensy community theater that liked to call itself professional.....but then remind you that it was a community theater if you demanded fair treatment.
    Well said video, all around!

It makes me sick to my stomach to think about how some self-styled "professional" companies treat their crew. Like, companies that literally advise their staff on how to sign up for food stamps? [explodes]
Thank you so much for your own inspiring video--I see you're almost to 2K subscribers now! Wow! And congratulations!

Great video. Such great advice to young costume students. Nothing worse than not getting paid appropriately for your skills. I think we are starting to see a shift in this mentally especially as it is harder to find 'volunteers'.

Thank you! I hope you’re right about the shift. I see it in some theaters-let’s hope it’s the beginning of the change.

Yes! Yes. When I go to work on smaller shows, I tell them that I'm not a seamstress and that I cannot make an entire slew of costumes for a show in the appropriate amount of time. I have also decided that I will always need an assistant as well, even if just for a few days. Thank you for this. I want to send this off to such theatres.
As a designer I'm constantly mistaken for a seamstress or costume maker! Everyone is always asking me to sew things or I had a guy have me on his podcast, knowing that I was a costume designer, interviewed me with a question about how I made costumes and that was such an awkward moment. While I do sew and such, I'm mainly a designer, not a specific maker and my skill set isn't anywhere near what an actual maker can do. I do all of the above described by you and more

It's so frustrating how many people in our actual field don't even know what we do.
