In the mid 1970's I helped my dad build the cabinets for some Goodmans speakers. Our next door neighbour worked for them, when the factory was in Havant. So she got a little discount for us. She actually gave us a sales brochure for the Goodmans cassette deck too, but dad went for the Sansui sc737 which was made by Nakamichi as well. I still have it :) But my sister has the speakers lol.
I live when you do these off brand cassette videos. Back in the late 80s, a friend of mine actually had a Schneider stereo system. I remember being very jealous because it was huge, had twin tapes, CD and turntable. It had all the 80s graphics all over it too. No doubt it was total crap but it looked a billion times better than the Alba I had, lol 😢
Yes indeed it is called B-A-S-F, every letter pronounced individually, you were absolutely right Tony. Some people have funny ideas about spelling, they should be forced to always say the full name: Badische Anilin- und Sodafabrik :D And yes that Schneider is an AGFA, the "Made in Germany" printing does not indicate BASF, both brands had it on them, and at that time their tape manufacturing wasn´t yet thrown together. So yeah, AGFA. As expected, it performed very good. So from my far down the line hearing perspective, I would rate them as following: 1: Schneider 2: Socimag 3: Goodmans 4: Samsung Just a personal thought ;)
Schneider were quite a respected German brand. They sold the Amstrad CPC into the German market as the distributor. Amstrad still made the computers, but the branding was localised by Amstrad. In fact there are a set of jumpers inside original CPC's that let you select the branding for the startup screen. Amstrad and Schneider were the only ones ever used but there is also an option to have it say Sashio!
@@wisteela Yes, Triumph, Sashio, Orion, ISP, Solovax and Awa. Only Schneider was ever used. I think they were hedging their bets and my guess is some of the brand owners had no idea the names were in the ROM. Certainly Sashio was probably a plan to sweet talk DSG to stock the machines if they were being difficult. "You can brand them as your own". But it never came to that. Orion were the people who manufactured for Amstrad (presumably this would have been to sell the machines in the Far East) and ISP was Onions European distribution arm.
@@chinnyvision AWA was used in Australia. I have one I got from a friend a few years ago. The Australian Brand AWA was eventually sold off to Mitsubishi and AWA tv's here in Australia were actually Mitsubishi made after late 80's.
Samsung = Saehan All Samsung cassettes are Saehan because they have a common property relationship. Samsung in your video was sold to us in the years 2002-2004 at very low prices. One of the last cassettes in electro stores.
Yes, Samsung VHS tapes were sold as Saehan in SKorea with the same branding intact. Nothing wrong with their product - average in many ways but dependable. Always thought SKC were a slightly more premium Korean media brand though.
The Schneider cassette has probably BASF LH-D tape, its combination of zebra pattern, colour and slightly convex surface are quite typical. There is also a Schneider Ferro S, same design but green instead of red stripes, which has what looks like the Agfa 619/819 or 649/949 tape. Schneider was one of the biggest manufacturers of cassette shells and parts of shells for others - that's why you will find what looks like "BASF hubs" inside this Ferro LN. The Goodmans has the Kolormagnetics ICM-style shell. And the Socimag has a Spanish shell, despite the missing IHE or Inverhouse markings in this example. No idea about its tape, but it does not look like any of the common Agfa or BASF types.
The semi transparent tape with this particular color in the Socimag tells me it's definitely RAKS tape, probably an ED-X. It performs like one as well, meaning really good.
Thanks, Tony. this was fun and really informative. i have a cassette storage slide full of these type of off-brand cassettes (Dixon, Prism, etc) that i really didn't know what to do with. i think i'm going to record Drum & Bass on them now! As for SAEHAN shells, I have many cassettes branded for various companies, but actually made by SAEHAN. Back in the day in 1994 there was my favorite cassette koisk near Arbatskaya (blue line) metro station in Moscow, Russia. I bought from there totally six AKAI GX 90 Type II cassettes. Their shells are exactly as of this particular SAMSUNG. For one of these cassettes I still have the back part of the wrapper, which says explicitly that this is "highg-quality cobalt doped ferric". And that's right, the tape itself is really high quality, I used them on my old Soviet Radiotehnika 201 Deck, then on my KENWOOD Double Cassette deck I brought from the US in 1994, then on my three-header 1996 KENWOOD KX-7060S, then, when it broke, on 1988 Soviet-made RAPRI-102S I have today, and I like the tape quality of it. Several days ago I bought from Russian internet store three AKAI HX 90 Type I cassettes, which are in the same shells, also I have one BASF Ferro Extra I saying "Made in Korea" and also in the same shell (this one came from one of Russian internet auction resellers). These AKAI GX were much cheaper in 1994 then other type II tapes, so totally I bought six of them back in the day. AKAI HX claim to be "for demanding classical music sources"< and they are really good super ferrics, but I found out that as of my ears they require some negative bias to get best of it (relatively to TDK D, for example). I don't know really who made the tape for these AKAI, but as for GX Type IIs they smell similar to 1985 line Maxell cassettes. So, maybe AKAI GX and Maxell UDII have the same tape inside, but I am not sure. Maybe somebody knows, comments welcome.
I'm familiar with the Schneider brand, but for reel to reel. I never got a tape from them, but once I needed an empty reel, and the store had that brand, so I bought it (in the mid-80s).
