I have the retainer clip just ahead of the collar on the blade itself. I found if I didn't have the clip on, the back middle on some blanks would not be absolutely against the tongue and I would get a small gouge in the middle 3rd. The Rieger machine I have is very similar, but a lot more expensive.

How long after Rieger introduced their first tip profiler? Forty, fifty years? At least! This looks like an almost identical copy! So I will also stick to my faithful Rieger machines.

I've done about 70 reeds so far and haven't had a problem with slipping, it could be this particular mandrel or the shape and bevel of my tube. This makes me wonder though if the retainer clip can make a difference by pressing the blade down against the tongue more.

@@sandernl4990 The basic concept is very similar and I wouldn't think you'd gain too much by getting a new machine. However, the MD does offer more adjustibility in regards to the angle and portion of the template being used.

I can't fathom someone saying using a tip profiler means you won't learn to use a knife or file.

I'm not sure if Norman Herzberg did this with all his students, but despite designing his own (one of the best) profilers, he would have his students profile gouged and shaped cane by hand, NO PROFILER whatsoever. This was how every bassoonist had to make reeds a few generations ago. One of my teachers also had me do this. I wish I could attach a photo to comments, but my results were not so good!

@@BlakleyBassoon I've made by hand for a long time but even with a profiler, there is still some knife or file work to be done. The material has so many variables that getting the cane to a particular dimension and measurement is rarely enough.
