  • The lamp is burnin' low upon my table top
    The snow is softly falling
The air is still in the silence of my room
I hear your voice softly calling
If I could only have you near
To breathe a sigh or two
I would be happy just to hold the hands I love
On this winter night with you
The smoke is rising in the shadows overhead
    My glass is almost empty
I read again between the lines upon each page
The words of love you sent me
If I could know within my heart
    That you were lonely too
I would be happy just to hold the hands I love
On this winter night with you
The fire is dying now, my lamp is growing dim
The shades of night are lifting
The morning light steals across my window pane
Where webs of snow are drifting
If I could only have you near
To breathe a sigh or two
I would be happy just to hold the hands I love
On this winter night with you
And to be once again with you.

I Love this song: Emerald lake chalet (BC), checking on the custodian, shoveling the 7 feet o snow from the chalet roof.
Coal oil lamps, propane heat, no power. Limited batteries.
This song ran through my mind and spirit for my love back in Banff (Cyd). The sound of trains breaking to Field BC, from the famed Spiral Tunnels. Truly, love ran through my heart and soul. Sadly it is over 50years ago. Still the memory with this song lingers with affection. Thank You Gordon, for the sound track of my life, Inestimable thanks.

I live about a half hour away from where Gordon was born. By this accident of birth, I’ve been able to hear him on many occasions over the years. What amazes me and marks him as a musician is the way that he has grown into his own music. The songs are in many instances the same, but they are now infused with the maturity of a man who ho has passed through life, approached death and survived. There is an incredible dignity to his music. What more can I say?

Awesome! Saw Mr. Lightfoot 3 times in the 70's. I was a broke college student, could hardly afford the tickets but had my priorities. The woman I didn't marry was with me in my truck on a snowy Michigan road, December night, this song came on, and we fell in love all over again. The woman I married has had no such GL moment, still I love her more than life. No wonder I became a novelist, with Lightfoot's phrasings and imagery often creeping into my work. God, I'm a lucky man. Thanks for posting.

My whole life i have wondered why he never enjoyed the degree of fame he deserves. So many others not even remotely close to his level of talent have become far more famous and well known. Dylan is considered a poet for the ages. How in God's name could anyone not find lightfoots music to be light years ahead of dylans in that regard let alone musically ?

I've played it over and over again on more than one occasion, just trying to understand what went wrong. This one transports me to the coziness of a cabin in the northwoods, fireplace, drinking wine, snow gently falling and longing for someone.Obviously. The must be a nation (no borders) of Gordon Lightfoot people out there, people who share the spot on tuning to hear the incomparably unique genius of this fine poet's resonant sound and spirit. I just tonight, thanks to an idle RUclips query, recaptured the special feeling I had so many years ago upon first hearing GL on "Ten Degrees and Colder" on a jukebox in some noisy bar, and wondering "who is that"? I'm not 64 anymore, but now a loving rambler, and the wide, western road is underfoot...

I've loved Gordon Lightfoot music since the mid 70's. "If you could read my mind" was released in 1970 or 71 I believe. I was 15 and had a Valentine's Day party at home with my high school friends. I even had a boyfriend ! Alan Guidice. he and I stayed together through 1973 our senior year then went our separate ways. 36years later we reconnected. the love was still there.i married my HS boyfriend Oct 30, 2011. we played "Beautiful" at our wedding. on Sept 26, 2015, just 4weeks from our 4th wedding anniversary, I lost him to liver cancer. "Song for a winters night" is what Inow sing to him each day ♡ I hope to see Gordon on may 13 in Tarrytown, NY and thank him in person for all his heartfelt songs. Annette maffeo guidice

Of the musical poets of my generation ( I am 64), none has had such a profound influence on me as a player and writer than Gordon Lightfoot. Rooted in folk, he was quickly covered by the many troubadors who he helped propel to stardom. Along the way, I believe he surpassed them all in terms of his body of original work. The excellence of his lyrics and melodic scores has well surpassed those of his contemporaries to include PP&M, Simon and Garfunkle, Jim Croce, and Bob Dylan.
    God bless GL

I was lucky enough to see Gord at the Jubilee in Edmonton years ago. A quiet night of pure musical genious that I'll never forget.

I may have been at that same concert. Was it the Carefree Highway or the one before? He was a bit under the weather, as I recall but he soldiered on. He just amazes me how committed he his to his fans and the music. "I'd Rather Press On" is definitely his autobiography.

My wife and I were somewhere in that crowd when Gordon was singing this song here inReno. What a wonderful evening that was. I love all his music but this is one of my favorites.

This made me cry - nostalgia for someone loved & lost. And I loved Gordon's music in the 70's.

Gord’s Martin guitar lays down the beat that enables this song to slide so beautifully.
