    Great choices.
    Mike Powell's 8.95m performance still sends shivers down my spine. Same goes for Jonathan Edwards TJ WR. And when Bolt's 200m WR is downright electrifying.

    Carl Lewis broke the 100m World record in 1991 WC final with probably the best field ever in the final that certainly should be in the top 10

  • @lexsoft3969

    We all know Usain Bolt. But Carl Lewis's performance in long jump at that WC 1991 final was awesome : four of his jumps are above 8.80 :
    3rd jump : 8.83
    4th jump : 8.91
    5th jump : 8.87
    last : 8.84
    The last two jumps were his efforts to beat Powell's previous 8.95.
    Those jumps will win any competitions bar the WC 1991. Nowadays, we only see athletes struggle to reach 8.40.
    Btw, he also set new WR in 100m final with 9.86 and 4x100m final with 37.50.

Bolt and the other Jamaicans were really taking the piss with their steroids, its equateable to watching Jarmila and Koch smashing womens WRs in the 400m and 800m, the Jamaicans were even more doped up than those GDR athletes it is really taking the piss out of the sport as well as being great.

    Nine currently valid choices.... and Gunnell. Anyone think Kim Batten has a right to be bitter with this? As a Brit I'll admit it was great watching Sally take gold setting then-WR, but that record was surpassed two years later. Objectively, peak Batten and Buford-Bailey on 52.61/52.62 (1995) would've beaten peak Gunnell of Stuttgart (52.74), highlighting Gothenburg as more deserving of being in this list.
    [Melaine Walker, GOAT @ Worlds as of 2016, eclipsing all three via a current-CR (sadly not WR) 52.42 in 2009; ditto Demus of 2011 (52.47)]
    That aside, nice vid ;)

    • @535657
      @535657 8 лет назад +4

      Gunnell's record was the first time since 1988 that a woman broke a world record in a standard event (events that were on the Olympic program). 1988 had Flo-Jo, JJK, Donkova, Felke, Chistyakova etc, but then nothing for five years until Gunnell.
      The Sally/Sandra race was also the first time in the history of the World Championships in any women's event (track or field) that two women were inside the old world record in the same race, and was the first time in the history of the 400 hurdles that two women had gone sub 53 in the same race. Even though the Kim/Tonja race was faster, something happening for the first time tends to make it historically more significant.

    • @JMott76
      @JMott76 8 лет назад +1

      Thanks for providing context to Gunnell's run (had forgotten the drought of women's WRs during those years). Wasn't dissing her, rather trying to make a point. As an advocate of using peak performances to determine all-time rankings (as opposed to medal hauls, which are relative to speed of competitors over which you have no control), it irks me seeing a quicker WR not given preference over a (slightly) slower one merely because latter came first/had greater significance.
      Whilst unfortunately there's always doubt over variables like track surface/wind making it difficult to determine which run - Gunnell's or Batten's - was intrinsically superior, fact is Kim's was timed quicker and so (imo) should be given nod over Sally's.
      Personal preference. But I appreciate the reply :)

    • @535657
      @535657 8 лет назад +1

      I do see your point about Batten's right to be bitter, and 'd be happy to see Batten and Gunnell in any top 10 list. Any World Championship final with the first two under the world record is incredibly rare. I also agree with what you say about peak performance, especially when talking about records set only two years apart.
      I suppose another argument for this list could be Kratochvilova's 400m win in 1983, as that stands up better than either Gunnell or Batten on the all-time lists.
      On a slightly separate note, do you see all-time rankings as the same as all-time greats? Rankings wise it's Pechonkina, but is she the all-time great of the event? For me it's Walker or Gunnell.

    • @JMott76
      @JMott76 8 лет назад

      I've separate all-time rankings for WR, Olympics, and Worlds, identifying up to 3 "greatests" for each event (same in swimming), all based on peak performance. Therefore whilst Yuliya tops first list, she ranks =9th at Worlds (52.90, level with Bidouane of Seville) and some way down at OG [Walker leading remaining categories].
      Re all-time greats: Gradually I came to the view that you're only as good as your best performance(s). IMO that's what people truly value whether they realise it or not. Consider someone like Bob Beamon: Does anyone care if he did anything else in his career other than that one final in Mexico City? Not really, because he jumped 8.90... Which is all he ever needed!
      I apply that thinking to every athlete. No versions other than the peak ones need actually exist (much as we love to see the big names contesting over many seasons with varying form/success).
      Same reason I rate Kevin Young as, ultimately, greater than Edwin Moses (sacrilege to many). Sure, Ed was a "consistency machine" who dominated for years and was the quickest ever in all 3 categories for a decade or so..... but he never ran sub-47. Meaning at no point in his Olympic/WR career does he beat Young of Barca 92 (or Stuttgart if we're talking Worlds). Kevin, tho he lagged behind Ed early in his development, ended up being better albeit for a far shorter period of dominance.
      But as I say, it's all just personal preference ;)

    • @535657
      @535657 8 лет назад +1

      With regards to Beamon, I think it's the two things going together, the 8.90 and the fact he done it at the Olympics. Chistyakova's world record in the women's long jump has now lasted longer than Beamons' but she never won an Olympic or (outdoor) World title. I think many (most?) would put both JJK and Drechsler ahead of her on an all-time greats list for the long jump.
      On your three criteria, Gunnell is 5th (Worlds) 7th (top list) & 11th (Olympics), but she is the only woman in the event's history to have achieved all three (Olympic & World titles & WR) which is why I would put her top. I'd also put Moses top, as he has more Olympic & World titles than Young and broke the world record more times (4 to 1). Although at least Moses and Young's careers were close together and briefly overlapped.
      For me, the big problem with being so concentrated on peak performance is that it inevitably favours modern athletes. Take Iolanda Balas in the women's high jump; dominated for a decade, twice won the Olympics and broke the world record more that a dozen times, but on peak performance would struggle to make your Olympic top 100. But yes, personal preference.

      The decathlon doesn't tend to get the recognition it deserves. It's not so much a 'spectactle' because most non athletics enthusiasts would prefer to watch the very best in the world line up for the 100m sprint rather than 'average' performing decathletes doing the same thing in 10 events.

    Putting the decathlon WR at number 10 is insulting.
    Powell and Lewis long jump competition is miles more impressive than Bolts roid driven sprints.
    Jonathan Edwards should be higher up the list.
    1. Long jump 2.Triple jump 3. Decathlon
    In 1964 we saw Bob Hayes run just as fast as Bolt but in the long jump, triple jump and decathlon we saw feats never seen before.
    Why does everyone always devalue the decathlon? its technically the greatest athletic performance of the entire championships. its devalued by the TV coverage for some reason and I think for that fact alone is dismissed by many.
    Bolts 200m time was also eclipsed by Blake so its really not as impressive as the rest.

  • @teshomemaru4636

    You are selfish not to include any of African athletes who broke many records. Where you level the legend kenenisa bekele and the king of athletics Haile Gebresilassie? How can forget the two time marathon record breaker the lion heart Abebe Bekila? The above mentioned are some of the best athletes of all time in athletics history. Don't forget Derartu tulu the first women from Africa to win in Olympic, Tirunesh Dibaba who are decorated her self with many records, and meseret Defar the same as tirunesh. Bro your assessments is so biased. You only focussed on the European, Jamaican and US athletes. Don't forget Ethiopian's and Kenya's athletes.

    • @bensullivan5562
      @bensullivan5562 7 лет назад +3

      I get your point, but most of the African athlete's world records set at World Championships have been broken since they were set. A lot of the records mentioned on this list are regarded as the greatest because they are still standing till this day. And in all honestly, most African athletes tend to excel strictly in the distance events so that makes it more limited. You will also find that most long distance records set by the Africans were not a world championships, which is what this video is about. The reason for this is because pacemakers are allowed at the minor meetings, and because it is not a major championship they are more inclined take a 'risk' by going out hard in an attempt to break the world record (Like Asbel Kiprop in 2015, when normally he stays at the back of the pack in a major final). They wouldn't risk at a world championship in case they blow it- at a major championship winning the race is more important, and you have to run a race that is smart, sensible, but hard.

Bolt wouldve got silver and bronze only if they were in the same generation.

      @@cattycats4 Keep on dreaming. Wilt Chamberlain ran the 100 *yd* dash in 10.9 s. So a full 100 above 11. Many people who don't train specifically for athletics can do that. On a modern track, he'd be running high 10s at best.

    This is not a list I expected from the IAAF. Where is the 400m hurdles men, high jump men, 4x400m men, 200m women, 100m women, 1500m women, pole vault men, 10k men. These are much better than some in your list. So sorry to say that.

      The clue is in the title of the video, which is ''Top 10 World Records in IAAF World Championships''. That means this is a list of the top world records set at the IAAF World Championships. The men's 400m hurdles, women's 100 & 200m etc, were set at the Olympic trials or Olympics, while the men's high jump & women's 1500m were set at grand prix events, so none of those records are eligible for this video.

      This video is for world records set at the IAAF World Championships. Sotomayor did not set his record at the world champs.
