    It's like Mike knew that we were all still reeling from Lost and wanted to give us something to lift us up. Even though the song is dark, all of them are, it's like they wanted to give us a gift. The gift of the sound and feel that got us all into Linkin Park in the first place.

    Hearing Mike's vocals and Chester's vocals, bouncing back and forth, are like the thoughts in our heads, and the words we could've say. That's why I connected with LP. We are not alone in our struggles.

      Its a blessing and a curse because I think with how much its being talked about more and more people fake it to get victim points wanting to be unique having mental struggles and you can tell by how many people now a days say they have something but its statistically impossible for that many to have it.

      agree. people used to think mental heatlh as just "weakness" back then because its not.Sadly the whole "mental health awareness" just came into fruition around Covid era because there was so many suicide happening around that time that people really started to take real note of it. Thank you Linkin Park!

    Mike is doing the intro singing and verses but in reverse. Mike said that he was originally looking for this song to release first but instead found Lost which he had forgotten about. He also thought that the demos only had his rapping and there was no copy with Chester. But someone found Chester's singing for the song but it was only 90% done. Mike just worked with it this is what we got. So we don't have the full lyrics but like Mike said it still feels like a complete song. This song was heard for the first time back in 2003 in a video that featured Mike recording the riff for the song. Chester was sitting by his side in the video. Chester didn't really write any of the songs. Mike did all that. But....both would get together and go through them and do some rearranging of lyrics in order to get the songs to sound right. Mike and Chester would talk about things they were going through. Mike would then write these things in songs/lyrics and present them to Chester. they would go through the songs first then present them to the rest of the band and from there work on the music more. From what I heard, Chester didn't write anything for the early albums. some of the last albums had some songs he did write though. You can tell just from the songs he did write, that there was something going on and they have more emotion coming out of him.

      "Chester didn't really write any of the songs. Mike did all that" Is 100% not true! Mike was a leading writer, But the whole band were involved in writing songs! And I can name 10 songs that Chester wrote for the band himself but there were more. Mike and Chester also co-wrote, So did other band members.

    Please don't take this wrong in anyway. We can't say the songs were cries for help but we can say the songs are about real feelings. The multiple attempts of suicide was a cry for help. Those close to Chester knew his battles. We are all just fans with real feelings. Posting the Hotline number is a Great thing. some feelings shouldn't become real. The numbers do help. Love the reaction video. im going down my own rabbit hole today. Lost and Fighting Myself all in one day for me. I needed to hear these songs today. What a roller coaster ride.

    LP is, was, and will forever be the reason why I am still alive. When I was younger I had to deal with the death of many friends and family at a fairly rapid pace between middle school and the beginning of high school. I can't even begin to fathom the amount of times that I've contemplated ending it all because I just couldn't take getting my life getting ripped to shreds anymore. It was when I had first started listening to Linkin Park and hearing their music and how it spoke to my soul and everything I was going through, I broke down completely and let all that pain out. I got myself into therapy and started finding ways to express my pain, anger, etc.
    So yeah LP is legitimately the reason I am still walking around 20+ years later, I just wish I could ever show my gratitude for their music, their meanings, everything.

    I've been thinking about this song for ten days and decided to deliver my story about Linkin Park that I had. When it comes to Linkin Park I believe I heard them first in 2005. At that time I experienced many different things for the first time: like anime called Naruto and I was very much into AMV's, and during one I heard "Somewhere I Belong" by Linkin Park. Since then it was the song that slowly became my favorite from Linkin Park. I enjoyed the sound of it more than any other and when I started to understand English language it resonated with me on a deeper level. Just like Chester I needed "to find something I wanted all along. Somewhere I belong.".
    I already found many people that I can call as my greatest friends and I still have my family that I deeply love. ❤Still this song "Fighting Myself" starts to resonates with me more than even that "Somewhere I Belong". When I think about it I remember every moment when I kept some secrets from my mom. I just didn't wanted to be "another source of problems for her". This is the lesson that I learned the hard way and I want other people to know it. It's important to adress the issues, that You are dealing with to people, that You can trust. Otherwise You will be overwhelmed with those problems, explode with "anger that is constantly inside" You and still become "another source of problems for the closest ones" , and feel like: "It would be better if I would adress those problems way earlier" (just like me).
    That's a long story I know. But I think I needed to get it off from my chest. 😂Great reaction! 😃

      Linkin Park was the first band I ever heard. They got me into rock music. Them and Disturbed. I was also an anime head and watching those DBZ AMVs. Papercut, One Step Closer, and Numb from Disturbed was the first songs I heard. And I used to listen to them on repeat because it was such an emotional difference from what I heard before, it allowed me to sing along and emote my true feelings with everything I was dealing with at the time.
      Chester's death was one of the few celebrities who's death actually affected me, because I remember how much his songs helped me growing up. I relate to this story so much man, glad to hear this kind of baclstory from someone else 💯

    If I remember correctly Mike wrote most of these songs as an outlet for Chester to deal with his demons and struggles mentally. They were a way for Chester to say the things he went through and was feeling so as to not bottle his emotions/issues.

  • @PenneySounds
    @PenneySounds Год назад +41

    Before interpreting Linkin Park lyrics as a "cry for help", keep in mind that the vast majority of the lyrics were written by Mike, not Chester.

    • @victorvandenbrink6851
      @victorvandenbrink6851 7 месяцев назад +17

      True. But they were delivered by Chester. Mike and Chaz talked a lot about their lives as they were writing a lot of these songs, and I think Mike knew very well what kind of poetry Chester would resonate with.
      I don't think neccessarily that all of Chesters lyrics were a "cry for help". Chester was obviously emotionally intellegent enough not to carry his burdens all by himself. It just ended up being too much in the end.
      But I do believe that everything he sang about in some way was something he deeply connected with on an emotional level, because that's how he was able to deliver them so well.

    • @sebastianjennings1159
      @sebastianjennings1159 6 месяцев назад +2

      Yeah I'd say calling them a cry for help isn't accurate. Chester was incredibly open about his struggles. He wasn't begging for help like someone wasn't listening. He knew. He knew he was loved. He knew he was supported. That's what hurts the most. Even as loved as he knew he was, the pain was so great that death was preferable.

    • @PenneySounds
      @PenneySounds 6 месяцев назад +3

      @@sebastianjennings1159 People who interpret Mike's lyrics as a coded cry for help from Chester are just telling on themselves for knowing nothing about Chester while he was alive. They're trying to justify saying "if only we'd known". But of course, we did, because he told us, openly. His death was devastating, but for anyone who knew anything about him at all, it was not surprising. People who were surprised by it and try to retroactively frame it as a thing he kept hidden and only hinted at through subtext in song lyrics he didn't even write, are just admitting they never bothered to understand him while he was still with us.

    • @PenneySounds
      @PenneySounds 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@victorvandenbrink6851 That's the thing. Mike is very emotionally intelligent, and that comes across in his lyrics. He's able to take his own pain and struggles and use poetic language and imagery to magnify and exaggerate them to the point that they feel like they're describing the end of the world.
      But the things that Chester went through in his life were on a level of trauma that Mike's exaggerations ended up being quite fitting.
      Mike lived a relatively comfortable life, as I understand it. He never experienced severe abuse or poverty or addiction. I'm sure he experienced prejudice, as a mixed race person living in the United States, but even that was probably relatively moderate considering when and where he grew up, which was a reasonably multi-ethnic city. Certainly it pales in comparison to what he heard from his family growing up about their experiences. Not to say he had no hardship, because everyone has hardship. But compared to Chester, Mike seems to have had a more comfortable and less traumatic life.
      So when he expresses his life struggles in a magnified poetic way, his words could easily resonate with someone who has had a truly tormented life. They resonated with Chester, and he poured his feelings into those words when he performed them. That's why the music was so powerful. The combination of Mike's ability to convey complex emotion through words, and Chester's depth of feeling in performing them.
      But that's very different from saying those were Chester's words and they were about his life or his struggle with suicidal depression. That's what a lot of people say and a lot of people assume on first listen because they know about how he died, and it's just not true.

    Even though a lot of your arguments are absolutely right, all of us Linkin Park fans somehow seem to forget how much of the influence with Melodies AND Lyrics actually are from Mike rather than from any of the others. Mike is/was the crazy mind behind all of this throughout the entirety and listening to the Demos now you really understand how much he influenced our entire thinking about their songs. Chester gave a voice to it and it is truly sad he passed away, but without Mike we would have never heard any of these songs... and he even wrote how Chester had to sing the lines with him singing the Demos himself.

My library had both meteor, and hybrid theory they were two of my all time favorite cds to grab and listen to at my apt complex so when Chester passed it struck a serious chord. If I remember correctly this song remained in the volt because it resembled numb and another song from the same album to much so they didn’t release it apologies I can’t remember the second song. I was starting high school when they dropped Meteora, which is my favourite album. It was also the time I started listening to Linkin Park. Every time I listen these days, it's a hit of nostalgia, some good and some bad. High school was the time that depression became a big part of my life. And at that time, having support and understanding was seemingly a rare thing. I was forced to suffer in silence. Linkin Park's music was something that I could hold on to, to connect with and relate to. It helped me feel a little less alone. Even after high school, their music was there even during my darkest time. These days it seems easier to come out about mental health, seeing as more awareness is being shared. I just hate that I didn't get that earlier, but I did have Linkin Park.

    Yes this is another song from the vault of Meteora. If I remember correctly Mike said orginally they thought that they only had his rap part but they were digging around some more and actually found that Chester recorded his vocal part for it and they put it together

    I don't give a damn when a celeb dies, I don't know them...but Chester and Anthony Bourdain hit me hard. Literally in and out of tears because they were so vulnerable and open, I felt like I knew them. I'm just glad I got to see Linkin Park live once with Incubus, and I met Anthony Bourdain randomly at a party in LA and he couldn't have been more genuine or more kind. Not a bad bone in his body.

    Thank you so much Aileen for being a light ... in general ... but also regarding mental health. It´s super important to talk about it and to help each other out, I think. I personally can definitely relate to a lot of things you mention and I´m always thankful for your words 😊
    Also never forget that when you´re feeling down you´re also loved and appreciated by a lot of people. Myself included 😊
    Regarding Chester ... this song reminded me of my third LP concert I wanted to go to. Sadly I got sick and I couldn´t go but I remember thinking: "Well, what the hell. I´ll be able see Chester at another concert soon again".
    But that part didn´t happen.
    So, it´s so weird to think about that this "simple" concert opportunity got one of the most important parts of my life. I definitely regret that I didn´t go. But again, I wasn´t able to. Healthwise.
    Still, that song reminded me of that situation ☀

    Yeah someone like me with borderline personality disorder and personality infj which compose opposites I have fought myself and tried suppressing myself with drugs or alcohol that is no way to live if u make peace with yourself the anxiety snd depression doesn't go away but u steer the boat in the right direction to one day hope to hit land whole in one peace and it goes up from there cause it cannot get worse than the self doubt drowning in emotions not being able to let go off the past the internal conflict becomes too much to handle u feel like you are I a parallel reality when u try to forget the past and u succseed it makes u capable of coping but never moving forward it becomes this toxic mess and u think there is only one way out but that way brings pain to others around u and the true way out is to make peace and accept the road to recovery is a long one and a harder way a harder path than the one that keeps u stuck cause accepting it is not the only thing as others might not accept u and it is indeed only u who can make the difference no one will do the work for us sadly that reality doesn't exist. My family are narssasistic so I don't rely on them for any emotional support bur my personality is infact very different from them my high emotional intelligence makes it east to see the way forward and sitting in my bed feeling ashamed or guilty for things that they trap u into being in self doubt some of the things that happent to me those things were very bad and its a shock once u can remember what has happent to u and who your family are I was diagnosed depressed when I was 5 years old having few near death experiences before age 10 and becoming sucidal but now im 33 I was 32 when I finally found out how sick I am and that I have no emotional support and how much I have to rely on myself and always have. Comorbid anxiety and depression means I'm also treatment resistant but bpd is the most successfully treatable personality disorder there is no one who has it who doesn't want to get better but it takes long time, resilience, intution, courage , creativity, empathic, loyal and resourceful people with bpd have that in abundance.

    Been waiting for you to watch this one. It is from Meteora days. The backward singing is actually Mike singing and they reversed it, I don’t know if he did that in 2003 or before they released this because singing wasn’t something he did back then I’ll have to go back and listen to the interview he did and see if he mentioned when he recorded that part but the song was written and recorded for Meteora. This has a very “Lying from you” vibes. Fun little Easter egg that metallic sound that sounds like a bat hitting pavement, they used that same sound in By Myself on Hybrid Theory. I love that sound for some reason. I try to listen to these songs without the sadness cause for me it takes away from the music I feel more thankful for everything this band has given me.

    Again, Mike wrote most of their lyrics - just because Chester sings it doesn't mean it's his words. Audio books aren't written by the person reading it.
