You get many varieties of Banana in TamilNadu. The red one is called Sevvazhai. It is generally given to sick people and many believe it helps to get better and rich in nutrients.
Other one I believe is Karpuravali(Camphor girl), it has a minty flavor and taste is mild. That's my favorite banana.
Or it should be mala pazham(mountain fruit), without minty flavor but more tastier.
Then there is Rasthali , this is strong flavor and very common. But the most common in TN is called Poovam pazham which you can smell from a room even before you end. Strongest flavor and tastes pretty sweet.
Another good breed is pacha pazham(green fruit), they are far more tastier generally greener than Cavendish/Morris Bananas(the common big ones. I miss bananas living in europe 😭

Actually If you wanna try some local Indian desert or any baked stuff, I'd recommend go to a good established bakery or restaurant where they have different deserts. Coz road side deserts are never that good, which is why they're super cheap. They just add a lot of sugar syrup and make them look good. And that red gluey looking thing is called Halwa, there are different varieties of it with nuts and stuff, they all have a different taste although all those tastes super sweet, but the one you hold looks like a sticky soap and we know its not gonna taste good just by looking at it, coz that looks terrible. Halwa actually looks super gluey.

Hi dear Ben. The ice apple that you tasted is also called nongu. Chennai and many parts of Tamil Nadu do have hot weather, so having the ice apple during hot summers, help you keep hydrated, and they are very refreshing too. Yes, have the jackfruits when they are more yellow, which means they are more ripe and sweeter. India is a rare country where the jackfruit is eaten both as a fruit and as a vegetable. It is white when not ripe and in North India, they make delicious pickles from raw jack fruit and also a dry subzi or dry vegetables (in India we make a variety of dry vegetable dishes, using either a single vegetable or spices or having multiple vegetables and spices, and we make the same with gravy or curry too, like jackfruit dish, ladies-finger or okra, aubergine or brinjal, or having potato-peas, potato-carrot-peas vegetable etc. So yes, the ice apple you tasted is nothing but nongu (as known in Tamil).

SW Monsoon cover whole india but extreme south East tamilnadu comes under rain shadow.
So , NE monsoon which comes during departure of SW Monsoon.
So, south tamilnadu gets monsoon fom September and ends on December

Hey Benjamin, that's not an Orange. It's a sweet lime, your friend guessed it right. Sweet lime is both sweet and sour at the same time. More than eating it as it is we like to extract its juice and sweeten it with sugar. Try Sweet lime juice which is called Moosambi or Mosambi from a juice shop the next time, I am sure you will appreciate it much better. Thanks. Stay safe. Cheers.

I'm not sure the differences but I know that eating fruit that you don't peel has more risks. Since I'm here for a long time it is safer to avoid fruits like grapes. Could be fine when washing them though

Ok... I'd like to say a few things here...
First of all, I would not advise you to buy sweets from the local sweet shops...
Secondly, the best way to eat "Ice apple" is to take out the pieces and peel off the bitter skin. The juice from it is really healthy and hydrating. The next time you buy it, ask the vendor to take the pieces out from the hard shell.
Thirdly, the red banana tastes the best when eaten raw.
And lastly, that red 'jello' kinda sweet is solidified halwa. As I said, the sweets you tasted wouldn't be the 'best' versions of it. If you are planning to come to Chennai anytime soon, I'm gonna suggest some famous sweet shops.

By the way Michelle, Benjamin and anyone else if you ever come to MEDELLÍN, COLOMBIA, please go to LA MIGUERIA (there are like 4 points of sale in MEDELLÍN and look for them on Google) and ask for the Pan De Chocolate. It's DELICIOUS. Never been let dow (disappointed for people who are learning English. I'm an English language teacher and travel enthusiast with adventure). That shop also has many other AWESOME sweet pastry and as well as salty pastry.
