    After recording this video, I continued diving even deeper into the 0.01% claim. Aside from the claim that this is Gottman’s finding and the claim that this is the Gallup 1997 Poll’s finding (both of which I have found zero evidence for), I found that other Christian blogposts cite a different “source” altogether called The Retrouvaille International Handbook, 2005.
    For instance, on CouplePrayer.com, it says the following: “In 1980, it was found that couples who were either praying together or reading the bible together daily, and also attending church together weekly, experienced a divorce rate of less than 1 divorce in every 1105 marriages.” They cite their source as “Retrouvaille International Handbook, 2005.”
    Retrouvaille is another Christian website that appears to do couple retreats. I could find no such handbook or research on Retrouvaille’s website or through Google as a whole: helpourmarriage.org/
    However, a different site that cites the same Retrouvaille “study” says the following: “Significant evidence is demonstrating that married couples who pray, study scripture, attend church, and otherwise jointly participate in spiritual activities enjoy significantly higher levels of marital happiness and satisfaction. A national research study in the United States (1980) cited in Retrouvaille’s International Handbook 2005 established that married couples who attend church together weekly and read the Bible or pray together daily have a divorce rate of approximately 1 in every 1,105 marriages.”
    adventist.uk/fileadmin/shared-data/resources/family-ministries/General_Articles/Couple_Prayer_-_The_Great_Untapped_Resource.pdf
    Therefore, it appears that, even if this Retrouvaille handbook exists, it is merely citing someone else’s research from 1980. It’s not clear to me whose research exactly they would be citing (since I can find neither this handbook nor a scientific article making this claim), and it’s certainly interesting that no one is citing the original study directly. The closest thing to a name that I could find for this original study is "a national research study in the United States (1980)," which is not a valid citation. I would think that such a groundbreaking study, even if it's from 1980, would be name-dropped constantly across scientific communities.
    This begs the question: Do blogpost claims like these try to make it harder to find the original source? If so, is that because the original source doesn’t exist? And why do the different blogposts cite slight variations of the same statistic? Some say it’s 1 in 1,105, others say 1,150, and others 1,500. Why not just stick with the same statistic? Why are they all citing different sources for slightly different statistics? Let me know what you think.
    Edit: I made a couple verbal typos in the video that I'd like to correct. At 11:51, I meant Arizona Christian University, not Arizona State University. Also, at 23:03 I meant to say "the claim that Gottman found less than 1% of couples who pray together, divorce," not "the claim that Gottman found less than 1% of couples who pray together, stay together."

      While I do agree, statistics are almost never fact from many groups, both left and right. I still trust my gut instinct.
      It shows the West has had more and more divorces the more secular and post-modern our culture has become.
      Religion has kept people more united. Its just basic proof sociologically. It's not necessarily a statistic, but it's common sense almost.
      Divorce has risen even in Eastern cultures that been more detached from their original eastern philosophies and spiritual practices.

    I wonder what the statistic would be for couples who play tennis together once a week, or dance salsa, and how that compares to a real statistic about couples that pray together. My gut feeling is that highly religious couples might be just a little less likely to divorce just on account that their beliefs might make them more accepting of sticking together in a miserable marriage compared to people that don't have those beliefs, but if the statistic just tracked people who identify as Christian (with no further clarification, nothing about the religious practices they do together such as praying or attending church) then the difference might be almost statistically insignificant.

    • @MA-gu2up
      @MA-gu2up 8 месяцев назад +3

      I'm not Christian, but I want to say this:
      Religious people are much less likely to get divorced, not little less likely
      The couple being religious and virgin at marriage are two of the best predictors of the marriage continuing for life
      And this isn't just about them trying to save the marriage more if a problem happened, this is also about them being more satisfied in their relationships, being happier
      Check this article in the institute of family studies:
      The Happiest Wives: The J-Curve in Women’s Marital Quality
      The highly religious couple who are traditional have the happiest wives compared to other groups there, so probably the happiest marriages compared to other groups there

    • @Scruffed
      @Scruffed 8 месяцев назад +14

      @@MA-gu2up Looking at the paper you cited, there seems to be a 1% higher relationship satisfaction according to the additive index for "Highly religious Gender Traditional couples" compared to "Shared Secular Gender Progressive couples", I don't see how that's supposed to be a huge difference. Also, there's nothing about the divorce rates. I'd imagine they would only be slightly lower for the highly religious assuming that the comparison is made in a country where divorce is legal and easily accessible. When it comes to divorce, the comparison seems only fair if one assumes and compares two similarly dissatisfied couples, as dissatisfaction can occur in any couple for any reason.

      Do you have a study showing non-religious Asians having a lower divorce rate than religious Asians? Or highly religious Westerners?
      Read the following study if you want:
      Religion and union dissolution: Effects of couple and municipal religiosity on divorce and separation
      This was done in the Netherlands, and the sample is very big (+145,000). Check it, and see how much lower the divorce rate is.
      Also, Asians even the non-religious people don't have a lot of premarital sex. They typically wait till marriage, which will make them much less likely to get divorced by itself.

    As a Christian, the part about "real Christians" and "nominal Christians" is really aggravating. This is a very narrow, modern Evangelical definition of Christianity which doesn't hold true to most current Roman Catholics, Eastern Orthodox and even many Protestants, let alone most of the historical Christians. I read quite a bit of religious studies and it's a growing consensus that religions don't actually work this way, as a monolith that you must accept in its purest, most orthodox and literal interpretation.

    • @maraisreynolds9688
      @maraisreynolds9688 8 месяцев назад +15

      In different countries and groups of people, even among different denominations, there will be differences in how Christianity looks and certain practices may be omitted or used.
      However, the claims that Christianity is the only true religion and the Bible is completely true *should* be something that a Christian believes, otherwise why bother identifying as a Christian?
      There are fundamentals that are exclusive to every belief system religious and not religious that outsiders as well as members (if religious) use to identify the belief system and define it, and if someone does not hold those fundamentals to be true then they by definition do not subscribe to that belief system. Modern spirituality has convinced us that believing in something to be true over another is somehow bad, so now we have Christianity which has no clear definition because people find it to be narrow minded and offensive. We have to believe that every religion is a little bit true and that our own is not completely true in order to be inclusive, which defeats the purpose of identifying as a part of any religion, which is believing that it is fundamentally true. Since finished, the Bible has been the definition of Christianity (as it is the only book Christians believe was written by God, the final word of God), but according to some, you don't have to believe in the Bible to be a Christian. Like I said, why subscribe to a religion that you don't believe to be completely true? That just seems disingenuous and like a huge waste of time to me.
      Timothy Keller explained the idea of exclusivity and ethnocentrism and Christianity in his book Reason For God. I recommend it to Christians and non Christians, he is very thorough.

A couple in an arranged marriage could easily be less likely to divorce due to cultural, religious and familial stigmas; perhaps, the woman would report “higher” rates of happiness and satisfaction, when in reality, it could be the result of fear in a highly patriarchal relationship.

Over the past few years Ive called out my parents on falling for these misinformation-confirmation bias blog sites they read (both helming from conservative and christian ideologies). Almost every time, the citation "sources" arent ever anything credible. I've tried to construct an explaination as to how they need to be aware of these trappings, but its been really tough seeing them fall further and further into these rabbit holes. They'll often say theyve been doing a lot of "research" when that research is only watching christian youtube channels or reading christian blogs. They're even at a point now where they claim the devil corrupts modern science and thats why their supportive evidence studies arent accepted in scientific circles. Its really really painful to hear, especially since theyre such loving, caring, and intelligent people. When I visit them for Christmas this year, if they bring up what theyve been "learning" again I'm going to see if theyd be willing to watch this video. I think your explaination of how proper un-biased research is done could hopefully give them a new perspective on the reality of the situation a bit more. The only standard for what being a Christian is that didn't check out, coming from a fellow Christian, is the one that says obeying God promises us a successful life. We are not promised success in this world in any way that the world defines it. We are promised eternal life with God in heaven, and trials and suffering on earth while being comforted by the peace and love of God. Sounds like Joel Osteen wrote that rule. 😂
    I'm glad you looked into where the statistic comes from and its validity. I hope it reaches the Christians touting it around in order to win people over. I would not recommend this approach with Christians who do not have a strong foundation in the scientific process, let alone the basics of citing sources. I personally find it much easier, when possible (the more fabricated-sounding the claim, the better), to assume they and their claim is true when discussing it and the real-life implications of it. Often, the discrepancies even in their inner circles appear and the fabrication manifests itself in their mind.

    You're doing the Lord's work.... Claims like this only reaffirm that so much of the narrative around Christian traditions have been horribly skewed. I'm constantly at a loss for how misappropriated the faith is for the sake of whatever it is that these claims are meant to convey. It's saddening to me

NPD is a lot more common than people think.. it’s not rare.

      She's not isolating from family. She hangs out with her family all the time. Though she doesn't seem to hang out with her old friends anymore. But then, maybe she does and she just doesn't post it. As an ex-Christian, it's a bit jarring when someone converts into Christianity, particularly the evangelical sect (which I grew up in). But even so, let's not jump to conclusions or straight up say things that aren't true❤

    Great vid as always. I was particularly interested by your discussion of the subjectivity of religion, as it challenged some notions I had in my head as a former Christian.
    I know It’s kind of outside the scope of the channel, but making a video about the psychology of religious study/ apologetics and It’s inherent basis on conformation bias would be cool
    I used to study apologetics in high school, and looking back, I find it suspect that the approach was to start with the conclusion (being that the bible is true) and then working BACKWARDS to find evidence; It’s literally backwards logic. A good example is whenever the bible does seem to contradict itself, instead of substantiating that, the theological approach is to do as much mental gymnastics as possible to explain how it isn’t a contradiction, because not doing so destroys their whole worldview.

    • @BlakeKasgaard
      @BlakeKasgaard 8 месяцев назад

      That's how all science works though. This atomized worldview you have starts with what we know about physics right here, right now, then based on some measurements we just extrapolate backwards until we get to the "Big Bang", because that's the only thing that makes sense from our narrow understanding. Except everything changes every couple years, and any "law" of physics breaks down at high temperatures, high speeds, high pressures...
      I think the entire presupposition is wrong. The conscious experience we're having is absolutely more than just a bunch of carbon atoms bouncing around. We clearly don't know everything, we barely understand the brain because it's like playing a video game and trying to figure out existence from what you can "observe" there.
      Contradictions are because the Bible is a progression. If you take the Old Testament, it's basically Hebrew law (bacon bad, don't mix different types of cloth, etc). And the New Testament is Christ's word. The new supersedes the old. And the very last chapter makes everything very crystal clear. If you interpret it literally, it's interesting and insightful. Even if you don't believe it's the word of God, it is absolutely a way to live an honest, healthy, meaningful life and build a community that does the same.

    This is the kind of measured, comprehensive, evidence-based takedown of misinformation I wish there were more of. I mean, the 1% stat cited is obviously nonsense, but it was really nice to have you model what functionally is an expose not of conservative Christian bloggers so much as the whole discursive style on the internet ("confirmation bias in action").

    also, smart people fend for the world not religious people. so, seeing the big picture, be smart & kind better.

    Dr. Ana. I too like to read research (although not as deeply as you) and so I appreciate a search for truth. Unless I missed it in the video, I'm wondering why you didn't contact The Gottman Institute? I did after watching your video and before I give their answer I will add that I am a follower of Christ - yes, a Christian - and I support the transparency that you are looking for but I'll say I do feel like you were search to disprove rather than searching to learn the answer. That is bad "research." ;)
    Okay, so I heard back from the institute just this evening and they said - and this was from one of their research team - "[our] take is that this statistic isn't from any of John or Julie Gottman's research." They shared it might come from gallup, not as an endorsement but that they too went searching and they too found the link (citation) mission.
    I'd like to end with a quote from the bible that I believes supports you desire to fact check. Colossians 2:8: “See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ."
    In the end, the non-longitudinal study by Ellison et al. (2010) does say positive things about reflection and prayer that we can't throw out with the bath water. (DOI:10.1111/j.1741-3737.2010.00742.x) But yes, it isn't linked to the 1% claim.

    Definitely different Christian sects will have different interpretations for various scriptures. One thing the sects radically differ on are the idea of a rapture and another that comes to mind immediately is Mary, the mother of Jesus. However, fundamental to the ideology of Biblical Christianity they will not pick and choose which parts of the Bible to believe in. That is just heretical.
