thats why it worked. he did the mad max thing hes done since road warrior. he isnt personally invested beyond self preservation. he drifts into someone elses story and despite his instinct to simply survive, he does whats right. In road warrior it was the people of that village. In beyond thunderdome it was the orphans. In fury road it was furiosa and the wives. But in all those cases evil men would have triumphed if he hadnt wandered into their stories.
