In 1962, a rocket engineer named Gene Middlebrooks applied what he’d learned designing ballistic missiles to build and sell turbine-based power-adding equipment for cars. And when we say “turbine-based”, we don’t mean turbochargers. His “turbo drag axle” was a revolutionary invention that used a turbine to drive the axle of a car, which let drivers toggle their car between comfortable street ride and absolutely mind-boggling power. So why aren't we all driving on turbo axles? Today on B2B we'll explore the brilliance and the pitfalls of this by-gone work of genius.

Want to talk about an absolute outrageous car, that was it. The owner was heir to Reynolds Tobacco Company so he had money to play with. He’d go cruising the streets with this car and use the rocket in street races! I live near the old haunts of this car and couldn’t imagine where he had a straight enough line to use the turbine. I was a teenager back in the 60s when they started advertising the Turbonic or what ever it was named. It was advertised with a photo showing it racing a top fuel dragster....it was in a go cart. The photo had the go kart doing a wheely. Supposedly it beat the dragster. Whether that was real or not was a big issue. Since in those days a top fuel dragster would just max out a bit over 200 mph at 7 seconds (Don Garlets was the first to go over 200 mph in a top fuel dragster in a NHRA sanctioned race). I don't believe they said it did a 5 second 240mph quarter. I also find int highly unlikely they would have allowed something like that on a sanctioned race track.
I always wondered if anyone actually put it on a car....or blew them and the car up with it.

They were essentially the hot turbine of a turbocharger with one of their rocket engines combustion chambers plumbed onto the inlet. There is no reason why you couldn't run any of these units on other fuels. You'd just have to get your injectors and pressures right. Go for it!

I witnessed one of these mounted to the rear axle of a '65 Mustang at Thompson Dragway, Ohio. Ignition was controlled by a simple timer switch on the dash. The two owners of the car would flip a coin to see who would drive the car. The loser of the toss would buckle in, set the timer for a 5 second burn, and press a start button. The result was instant mayhem; ear shattering noise, flames, and the car far down the track, now coasting through the track timer. I don't recall the speed or elapsed time. It didn't seem to matter. The spectacle provided everything I had hoped to see that day. The memory still vivid in my brain 57 years later. Ahh, the 60's. I love having been a part of it.

I worked in a grocery store for 10 years, which i know is too long when the first thought that popped in my head at 4:13 was "that store is conditioned/blocked/zoned/fronted/faced (whichever one of those terms that all mean the same thing my fellow grocery workers learned to call it) horribly." Even with it being blurry, I can see labels not turned to face out, items not fronted two deep, items not pulled to the very lip of the shelf, items that have multiple facings with only one facing pulled up, items that should be standing straight up laying on it's back or side......... I could critique that terrible block job all day.

It's entertaining, it's fully distinct from the rest of the video so I don't have to worry if the whole thing is paid, and it's generally on-topic stuff too. (Tho i won the genetic lottery and don't need Keeps yet lol)
Anyway yeah, good shit team, thanks for kickin' ass.

This reminds me of the movie IRobot when will smith character is diving off on a motorcycle and the scientist on back asks “please tell me this doesn’t run on gasoline. Gasoline explodes you know?” People look at past technology and realize how dangerous it was or could have been. Who knew sending rocket fuel in the mail was dangerous. lol

Not knowing what a Turbo Axle was, when I read the title I thought it was about a turbine, connected to an axle and if you're driving at speed, it constantly spins, sending compressed air to the engine, eliminating lag.
Though it probably won't spin fast enough.
