“HERE”
Every year on Mother’s Day, I’m reminded of just how much I miss my mother and wish she was still alive.
I wrote the song “Here”, for exactly that reason. For many of us who’ve lost mothers, this day’s a constant reminder of all the things missed, of all we could have shared. It’s bitter-sweet, half gratitude half loss.
Writing this song was a turning point for me. It marked the first time I remembered my mother as the joyful, vital, beautiful woman she was and not as the woman who lost a lifetime battle with depression. Driving to a recording session in LA, I suddenly saw past the grief, and recalled her joy, beauty, her mother’s belief in me, kindness and love.
I finally accepted that who she was made me who I am. I’m grateful for all of it and for having made such an emotional video, directed by the brilliant Jamie Lee Curtis (in her directorial debut). As a friend, she knew and understood my history and directed the video with such singular empathy.
I remember shooting the scene where another dear friend singer songwriter, Julia Fordham, played my mother, with a little red-headed girl as a young me, and the three of us crying, (along with all the “daughters” working on the set).
I’m not sure any of us get over losing our mothers, they’re our first and deepest love, and no matter how complex, the bond is unbreakable.
That’s why I decided to re-launch this video for Mother’s Day….for all of us whose relationship weren’t easy, often painful, but who would give anything to see their mothers again…to have them “Here”.

I heard you sing this in person during a Christmas variety show at World Cafe Live in Philadelphia the year my mom died. I sat there sobbing in public, and I'm still crying while listening to it 10 years later. Such a gorgeous song, so beautifully sung.
This is one of the most beautiful songs EVER!
What a great clip and song
Beautiful...
