My dad in the 80's spayed car for a living, using a gravity fed spay gun he also stopped in between each pass the same as you do, they all did, he told me that it stops a build up of paint while the gun was stopped as you change direction. I can on!y guess about cans
@@keithappleton yes see you use them in a lot of your videos it's always good to do your bit for environment and re use as many things as possible👍thanks for reply and keep safe and well.
I wonder what the starting tractive effort of these locomotives was when they were in use? There doesn't appear to be any sanding provisions so you'd think they'd be rather 'slippery'.
@@keithappleton Ahh, I see that now. I guess I'm so used to seeing sand domes on steam engines that I didn't even consider the boxes forward of the drive wheel might contain sand. Thankyuh!
hi Keith, I have cylinder drain cocks on my John Drury built loco but they are not connected to the cab. I understand the need to have them open when I move off to clear the condensate, but what is the purpose of closing them again? I'm not sure how I'd do that as I'd obviously be moving and I quite like having my fingers attached to me hands. thanks.
If the drain cocks are not connected to the cab via a lever, then you need to stop the engine, close the drain cocks and set off again before the cylinders cool.
painting anything, other than pictures, is indeed a very highly skilled process, even for models. Yes, techniques are very different with models versus anything else. Actually there are several very different skills involved in painting, like your friend that painted your showman's engine. if your way works for you, why then change to suit someone else? Once again, a very informative video, So that is how and why you bake the paint, cool. ;-)
@@keithappleton Google knows a lot! I checked "A Town Like This". It recalls me Haggard, early Genesis with Peter Gabriel and a bit King Crimson :) Sounds great!
Hi Keith I am in the live steam market I live in the USA and am looking for a 4 3/4 inch gauge or 7 1/4 inch gauge I am looking at a maxitrax Alice is that a good engine if it is not do you have any other recommendations that cost less than or around $5000
I fill my loco boiler using a hose attachment on the blowdown. Fills nice and fast.
Just wanted to say, that's going to be a beautiful locomotive when you are done.
I hope so. Thanks David.
I like the details you go to to make this look nice, Keith.

If I do it any other way the air is filled with overspray and the paint runs . . .
@@keithappleton I think you do it the right way
You must eat a lot of sweets the tub collection you have🤣 great video and good stories thanks keith👍
I get them from my friend Chris English at CME Engineering . . . .very useful they are too.

They had huge sandboxes on each side which allowed sand to be sprinkled on the rails to aid adhesion.
The Square bits either side of the driving wheel splasher were the sandboxes I think

@@keithappleton thanks Keith, so I'm guessing they're just opened for that initial setting off

Once you finish this project why don't you have a go at building a ram pump
Because they are so very cheap to buy commercially, it's not worth the time it would take to make one.
what is your favorite type of music to play
I do it commercially as my job, so I play many different types of music styles.
