I wouldn't suggest pulling the e-brake only because someone's first reaction is going to be pulling it completely and fast. If you lock the wheels like that it's very likely the car is going to crash

The dispatcher already sent the police the second he hears that they cant stop the car, his job is to be as calm as possible so the callers dont panic. Ngl I think they will die eitherway because you cant really stop a car without heavy impact
This actually happened to me back in 2004. I bought 1996 Delta 88. A few months after i bought it the gas pedal got stuck while i was on the freeway in pouring rain. I had no idea what to do. Was literally TERRIFIED. Seeing that i was approaching heavy traffic i purpously slammed the car into the center median and prayed. Thankfully the car spun without hitting any other cars and i survived.

Put it in neutral and cut the power. Do not turn the wheel until you drop to about 45 which should be pretty quick, and carefully move to the shoulder. Had my accelerator get stuck once, friggin terrifying.
The 911 operator could have advised him to do those, try putting it to neutral or turning the ignition off, sometimes in a panic they only look forward and make sure they don't hit anything. There was a similar incident that happened with another vehicle, an SUV, the lone occupant, a woman driver called 911 and did everything she did all those that can possibly slow or stop the car, before the police or the 911 operator gave her the instructions. Fortunately that woman survived.

I realized he was talking about one of the main roads near my area! Learn something new every day. Upon reading through comments, I was also educated that the people inside the vehicle didn’t survive this accidental nightmare. My deepest condolences go out to the family affected. This is something I will never forget in my lifetime. I watched it on the news when it happened and they played the full recording. The sound of all of these people screaming and praying and then go to complete silence was the absolute most horrific and tragic thing I've heard in my life. They all died instantly. I wasn't prepared to hear that. I just recall instantly bawling and couldn't stop crying. They were in a Toyota Prius. Sadly, they relied on the 911 operator to give them life saving instructions, but she was clueless as to how to help them. Sometimes when ur in a panicked situation, your common sense goes out the door. This traumatized me for years and is the reason why I never wanted a Prius, even if it was a fluke. Watching it over again now sorta brings back those horrific memories. God bless that beautiful family! 🙏❤️
Yeah and the worst part of it is it was a situation that could have been figured out quite easily if they would have just remained calm. Shifting to neutral would have worked to stop this vehicle. It would disengage the drive completely, and vehicle would begin to lose speed rather quickly. This is an incredibly tragic story

@@LTJC70 even when trying to turn the car off, you wouldn’t be able to do so and pull it off. Unless, it is an older model. Newer car models these days have safety features that won’t allow you to. Putting it neutral probably would’ve been his best option at that point.
If you know how car works this not scary. Even in the case of total brakes failure which is more scary, if you know how car work you can lessen the impact. But if your car steering snapped when you driving in highway, or one of your tired blow up nothing much you can do. Because you lost one crucial thing, a time to think.

They were not under any stress while I asked them, but they ALSO did not think about placing the car in neutral. 🤦🏻♂️ Cars are basically computers with wheels now, so they have some type of reset or kill switch. This happened to me once. Here's what you do: Shift your car into Neutral: This will disengage the engine from the wheels and will allow you to slow down the car without using the gas pedal. After that use the hand break gradually to slow down.
Some car to shift gear to neutral required you to release the accelerator which in this cases stuck. Edit- you can move the stick to neutral but your car waiting the accelerator to be released to disengage the gear in order to move to neutral.

Pro tip: If this happens to you DO NOT TURN THE CAR OFF. Instead, take the gear shifter and put it in Neutral then brake. If the brakes don’t work, slowly engage the E-Brake until the car slows.
@@blueflame3022 because the power steering system is run by the engine. If you turn the engine off you lose power steering and in some cases power assisted braking, making the vehicle more difficult to control. Best to just put it in neutral, slow down, pull over and then turn the engine off.
If your accelerator is ever stuck in a vehicle, put it into neutral and let it slow down on its own if you have the time. NEVER take the key out of the ignition because that will let it slow down eventually, but your steering will be locked
I went to high school with Mark Saylor. This happened back when SR-125 ended at Mission Gorge Road in Santee in 2009. An improperly installed floormat had become entangled with loaner car's accelerator pedal. I can't believe Mark didn't have the state of mind to simply put the selector in neutral, turn off the ignition and apply the emergency brake before hitting the end of the freeway and burning to death after crashing through a Ford explorer, a guardrail, a fence and into the San Diego RIver. Sad ending to his entire family.
Imagine applying the handbrake (which locks the rear wheels) while cruising 120 miles per hour and switching the engine off (which locks the steering wheel the moment it's turned, and also the brake booster not working anymore thus making the car harder to stop when the brakes are applied). Those are the things they weren't supposed to do.

@@crown674 That's not true. Steering column only locks once the ignition key is removed. I've also had 3 vehicles with handbrakes and used 2 of them in similar emergencies. The back wheels don't lock up. Now maybe foot applied parking brakes might lock up the back wheels. I don't know. Never owned a car with foot applied parking brakes. but even if they did lock up...that's precisely what's needed when your accelerator sticks.

Rental car may have been unfamiliar with how to put in neutral. May have been when cars stopped making it obvious how to switch gearing. Also could have been when push button ignition came to be, which some do not allow you to turn off the car at speed.
My Mitsubishi Eclipse ended up having its accelerator stuck at one point. It went from 0-60 so quick and I put up my emergency break and threw it in to neutral. It started doing a burnout till eventually it gave up and went back to normal. Driving it home was one of the most scariest experiences of my life.
This happened with my Lexus, which is a Toyota product. My daughter and I were going to pick my son up from college and the accelerator stuck. While pressing my foot on the break as hard as I could and literally seeing smoke coming up from the wheels and the tires, we continue to speed as I press the break. I pulled off the next exit, had to drive right through the cross traffic and thank God we weren’t in an accident but once we reached an open field area, I just turned the ignition off & snatched the key out. The wheels continue to smoke for about 30-45 seconds with the key out. Thank God we are alive today. (Corrected spelling of accelerator for all those concerned 🤨)

Wow. This hits close to home. Years ago my daughter called me in a panic that her car was going faster and faster on the freeway in Dallas and the brakes didnt work. I told her to put the shifter into neutral and try the brakes again. If the foot brakes dont work try the parking brake. She followed the instructions and brought her car safely to a stop on the shoulder. Turns out that when her mechanic had previously worked on her car, he had repositioned the accelerator cable out of his way by rerouting around another part of the engine. And he forgot to replace it to its proper position when he finished his work. This caused the cable to pull tighter and tighter without ever loosening up. Glad I was there to answer the call and talk her through it. Thank you, guardian angels.
Neutral would just rev the engine way past red line anyway, i think the safest way to do it is turn to emergency lane, shut engine off and turn on electricals so you have abs and power braking, the steering wheel will be locked so you have to make sure ure perfectly straight

Sometimes accelerator can get stuck on floor mat or some other object on the floor - nothing to do with the build quality of car. They were to dumb to turn the key off - that’s dumb.

This is something I will never forget in my lifetime. I watched it on the news when it happened and they played the full recording. The sound of all of these people screaming and praying and then go to complete silence was the absolute most horrific and tragic thing I've heard in my life. They all died instantly. I wasn't prepared to hear that. I just recall instantly bawling and couldn't stop crying. They were in a Toyota Prius. Sadly, they relied on the 911 operator to give them life saving instructions, but she was clueless as to how to help them. Sometimes when ur in a panicked situation, your common sense goes out the door. This traumatized me for years and is the reason why I never wanted a Prius, even if it was a fluke. Watching it over again now sorta brings back those horrific memories. God bless that beautiful family! 🙏❤️

Yeah and the worst part of it is it was a situation that could have been figured out quite easily if they would have just remained calm. Shifting to neutral would have worked to stop this vehicle. It would disengage the drive completely, and vehicle would begin to lose speed rather quickly. This is an incredibly tragic story

This happened to me once. Here's what you do: Shift your car into Neutral: This will disengage the engine from the wheels and will allow you to slow down the car without using the gas pedal. After that use the hand break gradually to slow down.

I went to high school with Mark Saylor. This happened back when SR-125 ended at Mission Gorge Road in Santee in 2009. An improperly installed floormat had become entangled with loaner car's accelerator pedal. I can't believe Mark didn't have the state of mind to simply put the selector in neutral, turn off the ignition and apply the emergency brake before hitting the end of the freeway and burning to death after crashing through a Ford explorer, a guardrail, a fence and into the San Diego RIver. Sad ending to his entire family.

Imagine applying the handbrake (which locks the rear wheels) while cruising 120 miles per hour and switching the engine off (which locks the steering wheel the moment it's turned, and also the brake booster not working anymore thus making the car harder to stop when the brakes are applied). Those are the things they weren't supposed to do.

The back wheels don't lock up. Now maybe foot applied parking brakes might lock up the back wheels. I don't know. Never owned a car with foot applied parking brakes. but even if they did lock up...that's precisely what's needed when your accelerator sticks.

My Mitsubishi Eclipse ended up having its accelerator stuck at one point. It went from 0-60 so quick and I put up my emergency break and threw it in to neutral. It started doing a burnout till eventually it gave up and went back to normal. Driving it home was one of the most scariest experiences of my life.

This happened with my Lexus, which is a Toyota product. My daughter and I were going to pick my son up from college and the accelerator stuck. While pressing my foot on the break as hard as I could and literally seeing smoke coming up from the wheels and the tires, we continue to speed as I press the break. I pulled off the next exit, had to drive right through the cross traffic and thank God we weren’t in an accident but once we reached an open field area, I just turned the ignition off & snatched the key out. The wheels continue to smoke for about 30-45 seconds with the key out. Thank God we are alive today.

Wow. This hits close to home. Years ago my daughter called me in a panic that her car was going faster and faster on the freeway in Dallas and the brakes didnt work. I told her to put the shifter into neutral and try the brakes again. If the foot brakes dont work try the parking brake.
She followed the instructions and brought her car safely to a stop on the shoulder.
Turns out that when her mechanic had previously worked on her car, he had repositioned the accelerator cable out of his way by rerouting around another part of the engine. And he forgot to replace it to its proper position when he finished his work. This caused the cable to pull tighter and tighter without ever loosening up.
Glad I was there to answer the call and talk her through it. Thank you, guardian angels.

Neutral would just rev the engine way past red line anyway, i think the safest way to do it is turn to emergency lane, shut engine off and turn on electricals so you have abs and power braking, the steering wheel will be locked so you have to make sure ure perfectly straight

I remember after this happened my dad was driving down the road at 70, put the truck in neutral, turned it off, turned it back on again, put it in gear and kept driving without ever stopping the truck. He then looked at me and my family and said "That's what you do if this happens to you."

I never understood why you can’t just shift to neutral. You will start slowing down immediately. Am I wrong? I know it’s very stressful but this could have slowed them down enough to survive a crash.

Sometimes accelerator can get stuck on floor mat or some other object on the floor - nothing to do with the build quality of car. They were to dumb to turn the key off - that’s dumb.

@Richard Gilley You can shift your car into neutral while driving an automatic. I've done it myself accidentally. Don't get me wrong I'm not shaming the driver. Just seem like it happens often enough that it should be known.

Basically Mark was approaching an intersection, to avoid crashing to other cars he panically drove into a ditch, all 4 passengers were instantly killed and toyota was sued i think

@@theglitch99 If he was rational enough to make an articulate 911 call, he could’ve thought of turning the key off or switching it out of drive.
You can shut the car off. Put it in neutral. No toyota engine will overpower the brakes unless they waited to try when they got to 120 and were riding them causing brake fade. They could’ve “ridden” the guardrail to stop. So many options, but PANIK no THINKY.
Manual cars are so much safer because you can just push in the clutch, it will blow up your engine but at least you didn't die.

Turn ignition off or put transmission in neutral instead. Though it's tough to make rational decisions in a situation like that.
