    I used to work as a porter at a place that hired elderly people. I near got hit multiple times by a coworker that was in his 70s. When I chewed him out, his retort was, "I've been driving longer than you've been alive." and straight to his face I told him, "YES, THAT THE PROBLEM."

      @KDG702 Month ago

      @iridescentsea3730bingo. I had this happen just earlier today. Old lady straight up almost rammed me off the side of the road and into a light pole. I followed her to her parking lot because she nearly fucking killed me. I approach her and she got angry at me because I honked my horn at her. Tried explaining “you almost killed me” and of all things she defends herself with “I’ve been driving longer than you’ve been alive, I know what I’m doing, and you need to be more careful!” Even though if I was just a shred less careful she’d be shitting her pants wondering how she’d be covering my medical bills and cost of a new car. Unfortunately a lot of these idiots won’t change a single thing about their habits unless they kill somebody AND face the consequences. A rare combo with our justice system. We’ve never lived in such an enabling system that allows pure inadequacy to seep through the cracks at such a volume as it does. Though I suppose that’s what happens when incompetent boomers and silent gen folks are the ones making the laws.

      @somedude9934 the Netherlands is supposedly one of the best countries in the world to enjoy driving in for this very reason. Everyone who doesn't really care for driving, can take the train, or even cycle on the countrywide network of bicycle highways.
      Many of the things improving stuff for non car users can make driving in cities harder, since unlike the US you simply can't drive everywhere. But the highway/countryside was always more enjoyable than city traffic anyways.

    • @jolteon345
      @jolteon345 Month ago +50

      One thing that I noticed is if you mention the idea of fixing poor/nonexistent alternatives to most people that complain about traffic, they deflect to “but then there’s less road for cars and it will get worse!” The truth is that if you give people reasonably safe alternatives, including ensuring that downtown areas are walkable, you’ll create space for cars by removing people that don’t want to and/or can’t reasonably afford to drive from the road. Traffic-based city planners DON’T want to do this because doing a good job means that they don’t get called back, but doing a sufficiently suboptimal job guarantees that they’ll be needed again.
      I’m glad that I can’t afford a car, not because I don’t want to drive or leave the area but because I see how scary other drivers are daily on my walk to and home from work.

    • @DavidSmith-cr7mb
      @DavidSmith-cr7mb Month ago +2

      lets flip this dichotomy: maybe there are alot of really grating bad drivers, which are triggering other bad drivers to be impatient? I am one of these impatient drivers (no accidents in 15 years), and I would point out that I get impatient when people go 10 miles under on the highway, cant pick a lane, signaling only after they have initiated a maneuver, going the speed of the terrain rather than the speed of the road (dont ride your breaks because youre on a hill, thats causing vibratory patterns backwards into traffick, increasing risks)
      there are just many many many many atupid and selfish drivers who hide behind "im safe!" when they are actually a road hazard, causing people to become more impatient every day due to their tepid driving patterns.
      the roads are dangerous. if you cant handle it, dont drive!!! you should be criminally punished for being a road hazard, just as badly as if you had caused an accident. its preemptive maintenance, engineers understand.

      The hard part is the absolute nessecity of a car in the US compared to Europe in Europe there us a lot of public transport and distences are a lot smaller case in the point of the family that are not local the absolute cliest is 3 amd a half hours away and that is pure distence traffic is a non issue u t the last like 30 mi uses or so and if you time it right you can avoid it. After tgat the next closest is 10 hours so its either spending like $700 on a plane ticket and $300 on a rental car anyway because to get anywhere in a reasonable time frame you still need one.

    • @nickthompson1812
      @nickthompson1812 Month ago +8

      Do you know now? It’s just a yield to those already in the roundabout. More specifically, I yield to those who are on the nearest 120-150° to me within the circle. If you’re continuing straight through the roundabout, no blinkers. If you’re entering the roundabout from one road and ending up on another road, blinker before entering to signal which road just like a stop sign. This gives a heads up to the other ways of entering the roundabout which way you will be exiting the roundabout, helping them predict your movements and making the flow smoother.

    In my home town, a ninety year old went on the wrong side of the freeway, crashed into an suv. 3 people died. The ninety year old, and the two people in the front of the SUV.
    A lot of old people live in that town, I’ve had a few near misses because of them.
    I understand that it sucks to lose that independence, because of how car centric the US is, and wish that public transportation was better so don’t have to drive. It doesn’t justify that it’s actively risking people that are way younger than them lives.
    Public transportation needs to be funded. So people that don’t want to drive/ or shouldn’t drive have a better option.

    • @zabijavak2329
      @zabijavak2329 Month ago +41

      EXACTLY and getting old and having to rely on other people (taking public transportation in this case) shouldn't be seen as a negative thing, i've seen so many old people refuse to acknowledge that they need help and can't be as independent as they used to be, either because they don't want to be a burden or because they look down on people who need assistance and don't want to be one of those people. and I think that stubbornness could be part of why they want to keep driving themselves, along with the lack of good public transportation

    • @atlasz911
      @atlasz911 Month ago +24

      Actually, the lack of walk ways, bike lanes and public transportation is the only thing that justifies unfit and old people to drive around. 17:54 when I was a wee lad I lived in the very end of a closed off neighborhood and there was a dead end that was originally meant to connect the back end of the neighborhood to the main road through a relatively small section of woodlands. Later as I got older I found out reason it was never connected to the main road was because an ecological survey found that the small wooded area was actually a habitat for an endangered species of salamanders, and also contained a fair few endangered plant species like Jack-in-the-pulpits. So sometimes there is a reason why an inconvenience exists, while other times there might not be a reason and it is indeed an oversight.

      A few years ago I was nearly run over in front of a cop by this guy blowing through a solid red light.
      Did the cop go after him? No. Didn’t even ask if I was ok as I started to panic that I was nearly killed. And I know there weren’t any traffic cameras there as the state didn’t allow them.
      But by not pulling people over the state can claim that their roads are safer when they just aren’t controlled at all.

He's a really good driver so he passed with flying colors on his second attempt (failed the first bc he accidentally nudged a curb at the end but did perfect otherwise). Pisses both of us off to no end seeing other semitruck drivers drive stupidly, just knowing how much training/how perfect you need to be to even GET a long-haul cert in the first place.
      also fun fact for anyone who isn't aware, most u-haul/penske trucks do NOT require a CDL to rent/drive, so if you're already nervous about driving near trucks then be EXTRA careful around those, because you have no way of knowing if there's actually a professional behind the wheel or not.

    The decline of the normal sedan/hatchback, the extreme rise of crossovers and SUV’s more bland than Great Value White Bread, bad and/or distracted drivers now littering the roads, and both used car prices and manual-equipped car prices way more than they should be make for one big pot of Enthusiast Hell Soup.
    You’d expect people would be driving better with the safety stuff that comes in cars now, but I’ve seen people literally stare at the lane departure warning yelling at them for not using turn signals like they were watching cocomelon.
    In awe that, in spite of my daily having blind spot monitors and a rear view cam, I still use the mirrors and turn my head to fully view my surroundings as if those safety features didn’t exist. It’s a basic driving requirement to be able to view and act based on your surroundings, but now there’s this dumb expectation from both new and existing NPC drivers that their appliance car should do the work for them.
    It’s insanity.

      People see there car has a feature and act like they don't have to do the basic parts of driving anymore. Blind spot warning is not so you dont have to check your blind spots, its incase you checked your blind spot and missed something. Automatic emergency braking is not there so you can stare at your phone and hope the car stops. Lane keep assist is not so you can stare at your phone and hope you stay on the road. It ALWAYS comes back to people doing anything BUT driving when they are behind the wheel.

    My whole family was nearly killed by a drunk driver who was driving on a suspended license in an unregistered car going double the posted speed limit. I stayed home from church with my older son because we were both sick, and 3 minutes from my house some maniac was trying to kill himself and the girl in his car (who had a dvo against him), he ran a red light and tboned my wife going over 100kmh. Miraculously, and I mean it's a miracle, my infant son who was on the side that got hit was 100% unscathed, and my wife had 2 fractures and pretty bad lacerations, but my mother wound up with around 30 fractures and won't be coming from for a few months. Police are still investigating, and I'm only sharing this to say don't play with people's lives, Had God not saved them (including the guy and the woman in the other car), all I would have left is my oldest. Try to remember to pray every time you go on the road, people don't wake up knowing they will die today, it's usually sudden and unexpected, and doesn't come when you're good and ready. Stay safe and Godspeed.

      This. I learned almost nothing from driving tests. My dad drove with me a lot, made me learn to counter-steer his truck in the snow. I literally drove a loop in the empty suburbs for my “test”.
      The driving tests need to be WAY harder. Manual transmission, packed environments, unpredictability on the road.
      If you can’t parallel park a manual in a city, ya shouldn’t have a license. I’m gen Z btw, drive a 97’ Camry.
      I meet so many people my age that would’ve totaled there cars 5x over if it weren’t for emergency breaking, blind spot indicators, and lanekeeping. They don’t even know the term “counter-steer”, and they live in a state with bad snow.

    I've seen people behave like they are in such a rush to be somewhere at all costs. Being angry, aggressive, taking things so personally while driving. Being those things takes you out of awareness. Being on their phones or changing the station while sacrificing their attention and self awareness. The reports of fatal car accidents happen so much it becomes like static or "how it is". It has become a tragedy to put your desire to distract yourself before your actual flesh and blood. Lacking attention and awareness is no excuse to inflict pain on people and should never be a pass to absolve responsibility on the wrongdoer. Wake the hell up.

      You don't need a high "IQ" for driving. They are suffering from main character syndrome though.

    10:28 the thing about testing old people is accurate. My mom was a safe and fairly careful driver but in her last few years she couldn’t handle things. She would just be spacing out driving down the road going from a 55 to 30 and she would still be going full speed and just have not paid any attention to the new speed limit. I was screaming at her to stop and she was yelling back at me because I was screaming at her and she would not slow down, I had to physically reach over and grab the wheel and lean over and stomp on the brake pedal with my own foot to get her to stop. After that I wouldn’t let her drive anymore.

      @shwanmirza9306 no, no. That was the point which I took away her keys and drove her where she needed to go after that, till she passed. She was around 70 At the time and passed a few years later.

      @turbopokey reminds me of my mom when she told me she started blacking out on the road for some years, practically forced her to go to the doctor to find that she had severe neural issues, and she was only middle aged then

    I’ve been directing traffic for 5 years in tourism HQ (Hawaii). The amount of people texting and driving is scary, someone yesterday had the gaul to argue with me when I gestured her to put her fucking phone down. Nobody even tries to hide it anymore. Don’t get me wrong, I’m no saint but it’s never come close to that level of stupidity.
    I have a million stories but one of two close calls was an old woman (shocker). The other, I shit you not, was distracted reading a novel. She was apologizing like crazy and I saw an open book on her lap.
    If a flagger sees that you’re on your phone instead of paying attention, they’ll skip your turn and keep you on stop. I train all my guys to punish those kinds of drivers.

      @joshuasalazar4316 Thats an empty Texan desert, I've driven there, it's flat as far as the eye can see. This isn't a top speed contest. These losers are going 108mph on a 65mph road in NOrth GA where the Highway has poor visibility due to all the constant ascending and descending. Speed is relative to the location too. It's like if some dude went 70mph in a school zone or bus stop (Like the 80yr lady) it's more than enough to be deadly....go ask those dead babies how 70mph isn't "actually that much tbh". It's all location, location, location.

      ngl 108 is just left lane behavior. sometimes I go 130-150 depending on how far ahead I can see down the road and how empty it is.
