      @@dharmapunk777 eh, I think it's more a case of directors thinking they need action or dialogue to keep a viewer's undivided attention. Most people don't just walk out of movies that they paid to see. Once you have someone hooked, you can afford some quiet moments - I would argue that you need them. People can only focus on something for so long before they need a breather.

    Actually, that is one of those key things that is really special about Ghibli stories. They mix this realistic feel into their fantastical events by having incredibly slow, quiet moments of characters doing regular things, that still have this incredibly loving and gentle animation to them. Its like showing the beauty and significance of things we can literally just go and do every day in real life, Ghibli movies give us magical stories AND they romanticise harmless parts of life.

    • @raettchen1988
      @raettchen1988 8 месяцев назад +22

      @raettchen1988 ahh that too. I was in a financially difficult situation recently alone moving out of a rental house, and a bit of a comfort activity I'd do was watch Ghibli movies and create simple and tasty broths and veggies like they do for my cheap meals, really trying to take in the process and imagine it animated while I prep. Ghibli food isn't even expensive or fancy, just really thoughtfully cooked market ingredients really.

    • @damienwho3945

      That’s what I was thinking. When “scenes to process what’s happening” comes to mind. I think of her breaking down while eating. She had to put up a strong face the whole time but she’s only a kid, so that’s the moment where she finally breathes and openly feels everything she’s been repressing the whole time to survive.

    • @lilpetz500
      @lilpetz500 9 месяцев назад +4

      I do really love a story that can just have a character's emotions compliment the weight of the event. No big swoon of music or extreme acting needed, as much as they are great in some contexts, just sobbing, that conveys more than itself through the surrounding context rather than just being in itself the entire focus.

    • @bsidethebox
      @bsidethebox 8 месяцев назад +13

      @@lilpetz500Another one that gets to me every time is the little run in place when Chihiro is watching her parents go explore the tunnel at the beginning. It's not dramatic. It's not heroic. It's not terribly foreboding. It's just a kid, who gets stuck in place for a moment while processing which of her two fears is the lesser: stepping into something scary, or staying behind alone. Her parents don't see either option as scary or dangerous, and Ghibli doesn't present it as either completely innocuous or foreboding, even though we the audience _know_ it's going to be a fantastical story. Instead you just get a kid, in a kid's world, making a kid's choice, as a kid.

    The Boy and the Heron takes this to a whole new level. The silence almost becomes a character in it's own right. I don't think I've ever seen a movie where more emotion is drawn out of a lack of sound, aside from the natural sound of footsteps on wood floors, than this film.

    That's one of my favorite scenes too! Coincidentally, I was just talking about this concept with a friend the other day, the emptiness of these moments in Ghibli movies, and this scene in particular. It reminds myself to nurture these in my own life. Leave the business to the side for a moment, breathe, and appreciate the journey.

    • @lilpetz500
      @lilpetz500 9 месяцев назад +6

      It's how they make their worlds feel so huge and rich with interest. They don't rush you through showing and explaining everything they can. The backgrounds alone in the movies even without the characters overlaid look so lived in, and like we're seeing just one moment of a shifting landscape that so many stories would happen inside of that we will never see. And silence and mundanity to calmly progress the main story allows us to take them in without missing too much or becoming overwhelmed.

    Ghibli movies have a very particular pace that puts you in the present moment of the scene, like a very short but needed meditation into the universe. It puts you "here", in the moment that you're witnessing. It gives you a short experience of what would it be, to be, in this universe. And I love it.

  • @alexvon8611

    The term is "Ma." In Japanese aesthetics and cultural philosophy, "Ma" can be translated as "negative space" or "the space between." It's a concept that emphasizes the importance of the empty space between objects or elements in a composition, be it in art, architecture, or other aspects of design.
    "Ma" suggests that this empty space is not just a void but holds significance in itself. It creates a pause, a moment of reflection, and allows for the perception of the relationships and elements surrounding it. This concept is fundamental to various Japanese art forms, such as traditional tea ceremonies, ikebana (flower arranging), and even in architectural design. The intentional use of "Ma" contributes to a sense of harmony, balance, and a heightened awareness of the elements present in the space.

    Yes! I found that scene to have the prettiest illustrations too. It makes me feel so at peace.

    Good point about space, I always felt like "the world" was another character in each scene in Ghibli movies. The world the characters inhabit feels different to other animations where it feels like where the character are is just background so when there's space to notice it it seems to come alive more. Probably why I love Porco Rosso; there's a lot of beautiful space without dialogue.

    I also loved this scene, I always loved the way the masked spirit also just beinga passengerin that scene and nothing being said, they're just there the both of them. I remember how surreal it felt when I watched it at like 13 or 12 yrs old. Now I'm 36, how time flies.

    I’m in MN and a friend living in Brazil told me to watch all these movies. And this was the first. I’ll never forget.

    Omg you are so right, very comforting reflective moments. Maybe that’s why I keep coming back to them.

    I wouldn’t say empty moments but quiet and reflective moments. It’s a peaceful yet profound feeling during those scenes. 👌💯
