This is pretty awesome, and Disco Mix Club is definitely one of original companies in this field, much respect. However DMC did not invent the idea of the remix service or the dj/producer. Neither of these concepts came from Britain either, they came from America. The remix service honor goes to Disconet in 1977 who were putting out vinyl from the get go. I'm pretty sure Hot Tracks was around before DMC too. Also guys like Jim Burgress were already successful DJ/producers in the 1970s. DMC has been highly successful at developing the remix service market and an obvious important part of it's history but the origins of DJ/remix/producer culture came from America from the the 70s disco era. Citronics pretty much invented the crossfader though, that's a pretty rad British born dj culture first. :)
LOVE DMC... What a great video Tony:-) & this brings back some wonderful memories for me when I won the DMC Scottish heat of the mixing championships in Henry Africas in Glasgow...back in the day :-) I think it was 1984/5? but the old memory is a bit fuzzy! Part of my prize was to take part in the UK finals at The Hippodrome in London & my mix there included cutting, beat mixing, phasing & back tracking live on 3 turntables & Revox reel to reel:-) The mix included some music of the day like, Ghostbusters, Caribbean Queen, Donna Summer & we tried something a wee bit diferent for the time & mixed AL JOLSON singing Baby Face with some footage from the tap dancing scenes in the NYC Macy's Day parade mixed over the bass line from Chic's Good Times...what a hoot:-) I enjoyed every minute of it...nerve wracking though it was, big crowd & even bigger stage! I continued to work at The Warehouse in Glasgow & on Westsound & Radio Clyde where along with Radio 2's Marc Goodier I mixed a weekly special of current tracks specifically for a segment in the show called "THE HOT WAX CLUB" In 1986 I then left Glasgow & worked as DJ in Hong Kong, Abu Dhabi & Italy before going to sea working as DJ on the QE2 and spent several years as an entertainment host, Cruise Director & stand up comedian on over 40 ships world wide. I now have a small company providing entertainment to Cruise Lines (including DJ's) Feeling a wee bit old at nearly 55 but love reading some of the great stuff that is going on in the DJ scene nowadays, still loving my music. This is a great documentary! I learned a lot about the DMC that I didn't previously know. My only complaint is how the role of Black Djs in Detroit and Chicago, in the early 80's is mostly ignored. Those Djs also contributed to the changing role of the Dj as producer. Those Djs literally invented the House Music Tracks that so many of the Djs at the DMC were mixing.
Ι have a question and it regards the history of DJ in general, and not the DMC specifically. Some sources on the internet say that Grandmaster Flowers (from Brooklyn) opened a live concert of James Brown in 1969. Anything more on that, if possible??

None of this would have happened if it weren't for people like Danny Pooch who toured England 6 times with his master mixing style and Greg James who was first at the warehouse mixing. Although Greg was there in the UK first, it was Dan Pucciarelli that opened the eyes of the UK DJ scene!!!! Les and Paul gave some credit to those DJ's, DMC should really do their history check and give credit. Dan was remixing records live to the amazement of other DJ's ears!!!
I don't know how we could have given more credit to Pooch than we did in this episode. Last time I was with him he was selling bootleg cassette dubs of Frank Sinatra from the trunk of his car at a New Jersey flea market! You wanna put the long knives away buddy, the Boston Tea Party is over! There was never one ultimate DJ influence, every DJ influenced the next DJ. Peace and goodwill hunting!

No question that U.K embraced dance music more then the U.S. and thats what Morillo was saying!! But you guys didn't start that shit WE DID!!! Remember it was Paul Oakenfold that went to the Paradise Garage to hear Larry Levan and NOT the other way around!!! And oh yeah, right about the time DMC opened its doors, something was already going on in CHICAGO!!!!!!!!! Here's how the title of your documentary should be called. " From the tail end of N.Y. & Chicago's dj culture, DMC gives way to U.K's club life "

None of the DJs you mention provided studio facilities for DJs to mix for other DJs to use rather than the public, WE DID. None of the publishers in America produced a magazine that brought attention to the remixer and dj producer WE DID. No one in the world put the DJs on stage at a venue like London's Royal Albert Hall and, in future episodes, you'll hear Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis saying what they thought of the British DJ's initiatives and how America ignored them. We bow before the DJ heroes you mention who brought us the extended 12" and dub b sides which Record Mirror's James Hamilton was exalted (before DMC) even providing BPM's on every record review. DMC passed the USA baton on to the club DJ population in the UK and European territories where, until DMC/Mixmag came along, the club DJ talked after every record. As hard to believe today as it is that we used to smoke on aeroplanes! When Brothers in Rhythm's DJ Dave Seaman says 'There was no such thing as remixing until DMC came along", he's talking about Europe. America was always a dream away, the country who provided danceable soul music via imported records which became the hardware for the next phase of the DJ story. You had your own remix service but they were unknown in the UK as indeed were Record Pools. The first episodes are about DMC so that the new fans know who has the authority to tell future stories. As it happens, I stood next to Paul Oakenfold in Paradise Garage and it was the quality of music, the size of the speaker bass drums and the drama Levan created with huge pauses in his sets that made him and the Garage what it was…unbelievable! I was also with Paul at his legendary birthday party in Ibiza when he and a bunch of UK DJs decided to work the island. But you don't credit Dan Puccerelli who came to work in the UK, and that would be because he meant nothing in greater America, but his influence as a man who brought pure mixing abilities to the UK, together with Greg James, both unsung American heroes who planet seeds that led to DMC. One of the biggest mix influences must have been the Dutch 'Stars On 45' in 1981 (produced by Golden Earring's Jaap Eggermont), which inspired our original mixer, Alan Coulthard.to mix with original tracks rather than studio covers. God bless American DJ pioneers and the scene we've created together and be assured that The History of DJ will be as factual as possible. And when we arrive at the birth of club culture in the USA, I might even mention when I lived in Battery Park City, how I went to New York's Twilo every month to see the new-seeds being planted by Sasha & Digweed. Because at that time Cameron Paul was blowing everyone out of the water, doing live mixing, before him came Michael Ericson. After Cameron then came Q-Bert, Mix Master Mike, Jazzy Jim. Greg Lopez and so on. Bay Area has been the cutting edge leader of DJ's after Kool Herc and Grand Master Flash kicked it off in the late 70s. Go to Mixcrate and listen to Cameron Pauls mix from 1983. Way ahead of his time.
