Gold Dot factory ammo and bullets are great, in my country(in France) policemen, GIGN, GIPN, and the RAID(all are "special force") use the factory Speer Gold Dot ammunition(standard and +P). The +P are for "heavy slide" like carbine, submachine gun, or "dirty gun"(more reliability with "dirty" guns than standard). Excuse me for my english, I hope you understood what I say.
I love your vids. Out of everyone you are the only one who actually does extensive testing with many loadings and getting chrono data and accuracy testing. Then go back and tweak it and do it again. The very thing we actually do as reloaders. Gives a great baseline of knowledge saving us lots of time.
I mentioned before that I am very happy that you are monetized, however annoying some of the ads can be.... I have to take exception to the Dr. Squatch ads. I actually enjoy them! Over and over, I enjoy them. So many levels of humor and mockery of the PC crowd without taking themselves seriously..., at all! Great humor. Great writers. Very well done.
This is the most thorough 'test' video I've seen anywhere. Many thanks for the info. It's exactly what I need. Now I don't need to do the tests myself and can stick to Power Pistol and Unique for powders on standard loads. Keep up the great content. Of course, I subscribed.
That was a good presentation, I enjoyed the intro.. hehehe.. Power Pistol, AA#7 and HS-6 would be what I would go with. 20+ years ago(Late 80s early 90s) Unique and Blue dot were the powder everyone used. That was then, This is now. anyway you did a good job with your format and the way you set it up, This is pistol shooting, Not rifle where five shot groups with standard deviation is a Critical demeanor, Most shots you will take will be out to the 7-30 yard line with a pistol. Good job dude, Get some Nyquil and take some sick for a couple of days. Dave.
I don't make a habit of commenting on videos. I appreciate your devotion, approach to testing for answers and your perseverance. I highly value your open-mindedness and humor especially when not being a perfect ...... person. Not watching your face and being able to see what we want or need to see is a great plus. I have found silhouette as my favorite 9mm, 40sw and 10mm powder. Bluedot was my old school 10mm go to. Now silhouette is. I agree completely with your choosing and eliminating 9mm+P powders. Okay NOW! Have you done or thought of 10mm loads? Have you used any Everglades bullets? I purchase almost all my 223/556 and various pistol bullets from them. Their 75 gr 223 bullets with or without cannelure are incredible in some of my matching AR platforms. I designed the only inflatable coyote decoy in the world. I am an avid predator hunter, unfortunately work gets in the way sometimes. I completely got into and become consumed by your 300 BO videos. Now I have some and one is my favorite mountain/timber gun. Thanks partner. Ed Sparks
I finally found a great expert on reloads, thank you Johnny, it looks like the Blue Dot is more suited for rifle rounds as it looks like a slower burn, if this is not mentioned before, don't put pistol rounds in a rifle, pistol rounds need a faster burn because of its shorter barrel, over pressure in a rifle could cause damage to the barrel, adding to this the Longshot could be rifle load hence it finds its tipping point, it does not improve even with larger loads, most powder is spat out unburned
With the silhouette powder, that publishes data was gained by using a different batch #/load of powder which is why they say start 10% below publish data and work your way up. Their published data maybe only in the ballpark of where your powder is going to shoot at so you could easily be loading the top end of velocity at either lower, or higher charge weights than what they recommend. If you're not seeing "DANGER WILL ROBINSON" pressure signs, you should be good to go.
i have a good bit of blue dot abd little unique and a bit of bullseye. i tend to load everyrhing with bluedot except my hollow points are all unique. im saving the bullseye since i have it unopened and it is very economical. i only load for shotshells 45 colt and 6.5 creednore of course i use h4350 for that but bluedot unique and bullseye seem to be so diverse
The deviation with standard and +p can be from the recoil spring. If your more energetic rounds are able to cycle the action faster you’ll get more fouling on ejection.
6.3 looks like the sweet spot for PP for accuracy and is well over 1200 getting it to factory +P velocity. Only problem with PP is it gives off a lot of flash. It's still my go to pistol loading and clear to see why it's also the preferred loading of the military who loads it to the normal 5.6 max for 124 fmj which has great consistency at that level. I love Hs 6 as well for best consistency in a full power loading. HS6 is my go to accuracy load and Pp is my everyday standard. I know a lot like titegroup but that's more a typical range load to me and I load every round to full power. I do respect unique but it just seems to do everything well but nothing good.
Do not feel bad about inconsistent results with some of these powders. In the seventies and eighties Speer manuals had different charges and maximum weights for ww231 and hp38 which is the same powder out of the same railroad cars 1/2 going to Hodgens and 1/2 going to Winchester. The same thing happened with ww296 and h110. If their researchers were unable to come up with similar results with pressure barrels and absolutely pristine components and conditions do not feel bad if your data looks a little inconsistent. Great job on these videos. I have been reloading fifty years and am still learning.
JRB man you did a great job with this 9MM testing and evaluation. Your testing showed that the Speer Standard Pressure 124 Gr GLD’s which is rated @ 1150 FPS producesd higher velocity’s that the +P’s which is rated @1220 FPS, did you ever pull one of each apart and see if there was a difference in the amount of powder used in each type? Or maybe if there’s a visual difference between the two types of powder in each type? Just so you know Accurate does have +P level data on their website, using the Speer 124 Gr Gold Dot.
Take heart 'cause I'm posting with an alternate screen name so as to be less embarrassing to you. You're showing why Unique might not be a good choice, and particularly not for a JHP defense round since Standard Deviation is 24.1 FPS while a better powder should be capable of less than 10. Something that might be useful to know is the bulk density of your powder. Since a good powder measure should be used for defense loads, and not dippers, the denser the powder in combination with a smaller physical grain size will result in the best metering and greater uniformity of your loads. As for your velocity discrepancies. The standard pressure Gold Dots are likely loaded with a faster burning powder better suited to the G19's 4" barrel. Since SPEER claims that they test both from a 4" barrel, there really wouldn't be a good reason for them to use a slower burning powder for the +P version. So all of you keep this in mind. There is NO degree for Ballisticians anymore than there's a degree for handloaders. Most of the component-maker ballisticians were hired because of a degree in engineering. Not necessarily because of any practical handloading experience; which is very unfortunate!
That was outside in the sun it's not so good at indoor range standard loads give massive fireballs and hamper follow up shots in a g19 ,CS scorpion evo3, ar9 5inch barrel will all singe some hair on your wrist when dumping a 30 round mag
How in the world did the factory +p gold dots go slower than standard pressure? I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on felt recoil as you go through the different loads.
First, I just want to thank you for what you're doing. I'm following this series as well as the MK262 clone series. As for the difference in velocity between standard gold dot and the +p, I noticed the +p was loaded to 1.125 and the standard was loaded to 1.120, I know, I'm reaching. Also, it's a shame you left out Autocomp. I as well as numerous individuals from various forums have confirmed Underwood ammo uses Autocomp to get their ridiculous velocity. My pet load with autocomp is 6.0gr with a 124gr gold dot loaded to 1.120. Out of a glock 19 average velocity is 1230fps. I've gone as high as 6.4gr with no sign of over pressure, thoes loads flirted with an average of 1300 fps. Again thank you!
Good data. It is interesting on the factory loads. That +P data almost identically mimicks the +P data for the Short Barrel +P, it was slower than the standard load. I wonder what is up with that.
My Dad has a hipoint its Awesome! 1500 rounds and maybe 3 failures to feed but only with are first batch of handloads i think the recommended seating depth with that bullet is like .1 in longer then what everyone online loads them at. With handloads with slower 9mm powders the carbine consistently Gaines 200 fps over 4 inch factory data. this puts it more in the class of a 357 mag then a 9mm! unfortunately most 9mm jhps do not stay in one piece at those velocities. im super curious if a viable load could be worked up with a slightly slower powder then data is available for.
@@JohnnysReloadingBench The ruger pc9 is awesome and rated for +p. The barrel is super thick and the bolt is a freaking chunk. I think the brass would fail well before that firearm had any issues. I've played around with longshot with it and have gotten good velocities so far from standard 5.5-6 grain loads.
only thing i could imagine for the +p to be slower, is it’s based on a longer barrel and the regular stuff has a burn rate for 100% in your 4” barrel and the +p doesn’t have enough barrel time for a 100% burn. 🤷♂️
Awesome video, you have a new subscriber. I love Power Pistol powder. I generally use it 90% of the time reloading m 9mm, 357sig, 40 s&w and 45ACP. Even using it now to load 10mm.
Speer manual 11 shows 7.1 gr. a potentially max load for HS6. You may have some wiggle room there, worth investigating. I'm getting 1250 fs with 8.0 gr. of Blue Dot. But it's smokey and dirty and I'm not happy with it. Thanks for the vid.
I dig the video Johnny,it may not be popular to say I really like Long Shot powder, however it work's for me in 9mm,.45acp and I load shotshells with it as well....KEEP IT SIMPLE & STUPID and I can just buy an 8 lb container and go for it!.......KEEP ON ROCKING IT!.......Johnny's Reloading Bench..........
great video. looks like the AA#7 really made them fly. I use #5 myself & win 231 for my .40 &.45. also tightgroup but not much between min & max charge. gonna have to use chronograph, I just got same Caldwell for my rifles but never used on pistol yet.
I'm really impressed so far with the Caldwell, especially considering how affordable it is. I haven't had a single shot fail to register yet! I like the interface on the ipad as well. It's intuitive and easy to use.
Well, Hodgdons shows a +P 7.9gr load of Accurate #7 generating about 1150 fps with that same 124gr GDHP with an OAL of 1.105". That's pretty close to your results. I guess my question would be why would it be necessary to generate even more velocity, possibly at the expense of additional pressure and decreased accuracy? The bullets were obviously designed to expand in that range as it closely matches the factory loading(s?)! Weird that +P would not be higher than the standard: just doesn't seem logical.
I've ran across the same thing shooting gold dot standard pressure/+p ammo I've watched a Paul Harrell video where he was getting the same results also. I don't know what Speer means when they give a cartridge the +p designation but it's not what we think it means.
Have you ever loaded 9mm 115FMJ with Power Pistol? I just bought a pound of PP and find out my books have no load data for it...I know, pretty stupid. Any idea of a safe good starting load? Shooting Glock 19...thank you for your help
2 bullets really screwed the average velocity up. it looked light they where loaded light maybe 1150 and 1144 or somthing like that and the others were1190-1200
I'm looking to duplicate the Speer LE 9MM +P (#53927 - Speer no longer lists this catalog #, but I just got two boxes - issued by Fed LE). They're aluminum cases. Wondering what powder they use to reach 1,220 FPS. (BTW, I think Blue Dot is too slow for low capacity cases. Works well in 10MM.)
Hey jrb can you update this video, maybe do a clone like video similar to your 223 clone video. Maybe this time using be86 (I think be86 is similar to pp w/o the flash) maybe even do a 45acp defensive load clone video.
Question. blue dot being a slow powder, would a magnum primer light more of it and possibly speedup the burn rate? and for that matter accurate arms #7? Opinion, anyone.
It wouldn't work on my 1911, Beretta, or Glock 43 so I couldn't justify buying one. Plus I will be shooting from a rest for accuracy in the next video, and I'm not sure how you could get a good rest with the bayonette attached. Having said all that, I still want to pick one up. Some day I'm not feeling cheap I'll order one.
Un supported my tail...I shoot 180hst's in 40 with longshot at 7.2-5 or 7(cant remember) at touching 1200 fps, IN 40 CAL and up to about ten reloadings on the cases and no failure, thing I settled in at 7.2 or 4 at 1186, my book isnt in front of me but yeah glock barrel "unsupported u safe phenomena " is bs
Based on my 10mm Glock experience, I hypothesize that your hotter loads are prematurely taking the gun out of battery and bleeding off pressure. You need a stiffer recoil spring to get the velocity of the truly hot stuff in a Glock
Yeah, having watched the whole thing I’m thinking your gun is bleeding off pressure a good deal. There’s no pressure signs at all and many loads are showing no increase in velocity even with .4 grains more powder. The main giveaway of needing more recoil spring is huge increase in SD above certain charge weights.
Yep. Soft recoil spring will do that. Remember that factory pistols are designed to shoot everything. A soft spring will cycle anything at the expense of speed .
It burns way too fast to get up to the velocities we're looking for. The first video of this series was all about powder selection. Check it out here: ruclips.net/video/bQIPXZq3hhQ/видео.html
Like your videos.Just loaded my first 100 of 9mm because of your videos. 4.7gr of unique and 124gr bayou bullets. Worked great in my SW shield. Next up is some .223 once I get dies and some brass. You do good work here bud. i.imgur.com/76eApia.jpg

Blue-Dot had fireballs from ignited powder being blown out the barrel, that was the main issue with wonky velocity.
I've also found longshot to be close to power pistol. But power pistol gets the nod since it doesn't mind being compressed to the extreme.
Your intro earned you an instant like

If you have a slow motion camera you can see it action sooner with +p, if you use a dB meter you can hear the difference.
I’m going to assume you have brass with fouled faces and sides as they were being ejected while the charge was still burning in the barrel
Speer is clearly not using the same gun when documenting standard and +P velocities at the factory...

Best and most useful reply on this video. Thank you.
5.7gr of power pistol works great for a standard load but will bite back during rapid fire in a 4.5 inch barrel but is great in my beretta storm rifle
Glad I seen this, it seems the +p is just marketing gimmick why not just get the standard?

It all has to do with barrel size. 🤦♂️ smh
Plus P in a 3 inch barrel is a waste of powder. Why is this not addressed?

Such a cool video. Was there a reason Titegroup did not get tested?
I would like to have seen Ramshot Zip, Long Shot, & Some of the Lovex/Shooters World powders tested.
I’d be interested to see the velocities compared in a shorter barrel. Speers +p may give better velocity in very short barrels.
nope be a longer barrel better powder burn, then pressures will rise with longer barrels, maybe with a magnum small pistol primer
the glock barrels have the funky rifling in them use a barrel with plane lands and grooves get better velocity go even 3 groove
Id love to see you work up a 9mm carbine load. Maybe 2400 or accurate #9.
I need to acquire a 9mm carbine first! I've thought about picking up a high point just to play around with. Building an AR for it seems a bit pricey.

You leave VV powders out of your testings and you shouldn't in my opinion
Try 124g Speer gold dot with 7.8g of AA#7, fantastic accuracy in a number of pistols
Thanks for the Vids! Enjoyed.....again!

Are you using smp.( small magnum primers)
My Speer book shows AA #7 at 9.0 max. charge at 1180 FPS. Hmm.
excellent video sir very informative
+p barrel must be short to get max from gold dot factory/ rounds
haha great accent!
I like loading gold dots, also. Load it with Unique

Noooo! Don't quit on Silhouette!
You don't have the pistol attachment for your MagnetoSpeed? It works just as well as on the rifle. I am really glad I bought it also.
LOL, I hear you. Thanks for all you do God Bless You & Yours...
Now that's a good video . Good results and procedure.
I hope you were wearing face protection. I know I would've been wearing a lot more than that
you need a sutecas brass
Un supported my tail...I shoot 180hst's in 40 with longshot at 7.2-5 or 7(cant remember) at touching 1200 fps, IN 40 CAL and up to about ten reloadings on the cases and no failure, thing I settled in at 7.2 or 4 at 1186, my book isnt in front of me but yeah glock barrel "unsupported u safe phenomena " is bs
great video
Thanks!
if i didnt know better id say ur scales are shot
For sale. Glock. Low round count. Only ever shot on Sundays by an old lady at church.
Why not titegroup?
It burns way too fast to get up to the velocities we're looking for. The first video of this series was all about powder selection. Check it out here: ruclips.net/video/bQIPXZq3hhQ/видео.html
Johnny's Reloading Bench thanks. I'm kinda new to reloading. Enjoying your videos and subscribed
Like your videos.Just loaded my first 100 of 9mm because of your videos. 4.7gr of unique and 124gr bayou bullets. Worked great in my SW shield. Next up is some .223 once I get dies and some brass. You do good work here bud.
