This is one of those songs that is perfect on every level. The writing, the lyrics, the arrangement and the performance. The lyrics though are what makes it. Pure genius.

Every little thing he does is magic. Songs that you might not realise you actually know by him include "An Englishmen in New York", "Fields of Gold" and "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You". All classics!

That guitar riff was created by his longtime guitarist Dominic Miller which is actually a classical music exercise

One of the greatest songs ever written. You guys need to hear "It's probably me", the version from Lethal Weapon 3 with Eric Clapton. It's spectacular.

“When a man's heart is full of deceit it burns up, dies.
And a dark shadow falls over his soul.
From the ashes of a once great man, has risen a curse.
A wrong that must be righted.
We look to the skies for a vindicator, someone to strike fear into the black hearts of the same man who created him.
The battle between good and evil has begun.
Against an army of shadows, lies the dark warrior.
    The prevailer of good.
    With a voice of silence.
    And a mission of justice.
    This is Sting.”

I have been a Sting fan since his Police days. He's a songwriting genius. There's plenty to react to: "Fragile", "If You Love Someone, Set Them Free", "Englishman in New York", "Fields of Gold", and "Mad About You" are gems.

The reason why there is so much reggae and Ska with British people is that it was a British colony tell 1962. Lots of Jamaicans ended up in England trying to get out of poverty. They influenced the young budding punk rockers back in the day.

One of my favourite Sting songs of all time.
An English R&B singer called 'Craig David' released a song called 'Rise & Fall' which used this track and it featured Sting on the chorus. The track is worth checking out too

Great song. Sting had this to say about the lyrics: "In a 1993 interview, Sting said the lyrics of the track tell the story of a card player (a gambler/poker player) who plays cards or gambles not because he hopes to win but because he wants to “figure out something” eluding him. According to Sting, the gambler gambles mainly because he wants to understand “some kind of mystical logic in luck”.
Sting went on to refer to the gambler as a “philosopher” who gambles neither for respect nor for money but in the sole attempt to figure out the logic in chance or luck, which he refers to as a law that is to a certain degree scientific or even religious.
In describing the character of the gambler, Sting said that by virtue of the fact that he is a poker player, he doesn’t “express his emotions”. He wears a mask, which “never changes”.

Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner CBE, known as Sting,
is an English musician, actor, and activist.
He's best known for being the frontman of the 1980s band The Police and for his successful solo career.
His musical style blends pop, jazz, world music, and other genres.
He plays guitar, bass guitar, mandolin, piano, harmonica, saxophone, and pan-flute. He's also a philanthropist who supports causes related to environmentalism and human rights.
Sting explained that through " Shape of My Heart ",
he wanted to tell the story of a " card player, a gambler who gambles not to win but to try to figure out something; to figure out some kind of mystical logic in luck, or chance; some kind of scientific, almost religious law. "

Sting(Gordon Sumner) played jazz bass before the Police and the punk and reggae-fied bass for that band's chart-topping and groundbreaking hits.
My favourite Sting story contains no small measure of schadenfreude and I told it to Guess Who lead singer and pianist, Burton Cummings, a Canadian icon when he turned up at my local for the blues jam in the late 80s or early 90s. During the recording of his first solo album, 'The Dream of the Blue Turtles', so named from a dream he had of blue turtles messing up his tidy English garden. The pretentious twat was playing with the cream of the young NYC jazz scene. Someone got off the phone one night, maybe keyboardist Kenny Kirkland and said "Miles is in the studio across town and wants to meet you".
"Miles wants to meet *me*?" He high-tails it crosstown and is greeted and led inside by Miles, who leads him to a microphone, a track already on playback, and instructs him to say "You're under arrest" in French. At the right spot on the track, Sting dutifully warbles, "Vous ètes sur arrète", whereupon Davis grabs his own crotch and whisper/snarls "Arrest this, motherf**ker", and marches him back out of the studio. Riot!!😊😂❤❤❤ A man with a horn and a 💩load of attitude that he *earned* y'know?

Great song! I always forget how much I love Sting for some reason, so many great songs to choose from, Fields of Gold is beautiful✌🧡😎
So interesting that you brought up religion and cards Hollywood cuz that's kind of what the song is about in a roundabout way, a gambler looking at the cards but knowing there must be so much more to the game than luck chance money and winning, perhaps something spiritual??? More along the lines of tarot and divination which of course the Christians did not like one bit!
Tarot was originally a game and where our playing cards that we use now came from, divination happened later and somewhere down the line tarot stopped being a game, today there are hundreds of varieties of divination cards and countless artistic visions of the tarot, but most of them still follow the original decks Trump and suit cards, it's fascinating♦️♣️♥️♠️
    Hearts..Cups
    Spades..Swords
    Clubs..Wands
    Diamonds..Coins
    Joker..The Fool

That is so funny, because, even though I saw The Police two nights in a row a million years ago, I grew to despise them. I only discovered Sting on his own through _The Living Sea_ IMAX movie soundtrack. The more I delve into his complicated and eclectic music, the more I adore him and his artistic nature. I even love his Medieval music. It's a joy watching him with so many different instruments. Much more creative than he ever was with The Police. But, yes, I will agree that his music is awesome for love-making, and then falling asleep in each others' arms.
