- In this quick video I show my newest watchmaking tool, the JKA Feintaster Micrometer, and I give a short demonstration of how it is used. I measure the pivot on a pallet fork and also the diameter of a watch jewel from a Waltham Pocket Watch. I also showed the original instructions which came with the tool when it was new and translated them from German to English.

It’s a precision tool. The most precise tool you’ve ever owned. Nice video!
Thanks Ed, I really appreciate the information! Also, thanks for watching!!
Just found and think your channel is great, it's nice to see someone just starting out on their watchmaking journey like us and special thanks for the translation of the directions 👍
Thanks so much for your great comment, it’s very encouraging!! Thanks also for watching!!
Speaking from a Twenty eight year career back ground in design engineering manufacturing, I’m am well versed in the use and terminology of this type of equipment. In the industry they come under the umbrella terminology of precision measurement instruments. Hope this information has fortified you position regarding your analysis of your initial determination of such a beautiful piece of equipment. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for watching and that very informative comment!!
The OD of that jewel was 1.70mm, you have to count the number of revolutions on the small dial also. Very nice tool!
Thanks for watching and for the advice. Much appreciated!
Wonderful tool. Thanks for sharing it.
Thanks for watching John. So glad you enjoyed it!
As Ed said below, it’s a precision tool. The word precision is a noun. The word precise is an adjective, describing the object. Lovely videos by the way. Looking forward to more. Thank you.
Ahhh, of course. I didn't think about it like that. Thanks so much for the response and thanks for the compliment!!
More videos please! :) Awesome content
Thanks for the encouragement! I’m working on more content as I write this!
@@watchasilearn waiting for more m8 :)
It can very well be your most precise precision tool. Note that if you used "most" then it should be followed by an adjective and not by a noun. Hope this lifts the doubt and lets you enjoy the grammar of your most precise precision tool^^
Thanks so much for watching and for clearing that up so precisely!! 😄
So, the question really is. How does this tool help you more than a Micrometer? Could you let me know what you used before this? Have you compared the two? Is this the first measuring tool you have owned for watchmaking? So many questions are left unanswered, and only a few videos address this topic with this tool. These are great questions to address, considering the price difference between this ($450 to $650, depending on the type and condition) and a good Micrometer that can be had for $100 to $200.
Hi Eric. I'm not sure I understand your question. This IS a micrometer. The only other measuring tool I use for watchmaking is a digital caliper but it is not accurate enough to measure the small pivots and jewels needed for some repair jobs. This micrometer is mounted on a horizontal bed which makes it much easier when dealing with small parts than trying to manipulate a hand held micrometer. I would recommend trying out several different models or micrometer before you buy if at all possible. As you noted, they can be very pricey, but deals can be found online if you are willing to purchase used tools. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
Great job, showing this rare instrument. I am actively looking for something like this. Do you know any alternative instrument I cab find on market?
There are several different levels of precision and, of course, price when it comes to measuring devices. This would be called a bench micrometer. There are also dial and digital calipers, hand held micrometers and millimeter gauges. They can be found new and also used. Hope this helps!!
it is 1.7mm. Check it again, in the little circle
Yes! You are right! I’m so glad I caught that also before I ordered the jewel. Measure Twice, order Once! lol. Good catch!!👍
Great video, what’s the verdict? Was the jewel you ordered correct? Thank you
Yes it was. You can actually watch me replace the jewel in this video. ruclips.net/video/yXNVIAtMouc/видео.html

Thanks for watching!
Great video. Where did you order the jewel?
I ordered it from Otto Frei. Thanks for watching.
Precision instrument: A noun (precision) modifies another noun (instrument). In this case, the modifier is stating the purpose of the noun. It's an instrument for precision.
Precise instrument: An adjective (precise) modifies a noun (instrument). In this case, the modifier states the quality or condition of the noun. It is an instrument that is precise.
Many Thanks!!
Hi , very interesting video, where did you buy this tool ?
Hi Jean, thanks for watching!! I found it on eBay by searching Feintaster Micrometer. Hope this helps.
Nice video! Not cheap these. Typical high watchmaking prices!
Very true!
Does this famous Feintaster also measure internally?. If it did, then I would understand why it is so coveted. Say the jewel is entirely missing...how do you measure to find the proper size with such precision then?. You can measure the pivot of the wheel or pallet fork for the inside hole diameter, but what about the outside diameter?. Say you just wanted to measure the internal diameter of a barrel...can the Feintaster do that?. I was just wondering because I noticed it's tough to find a micrometer that does both internal and external measuring. Most only do external.
Great question! Let me direct you to another video of mine called “How to replace a watch jewel and Horia Tool Review. This video shows exactly how I measure for the inside diameter for the new jewels using the Feintaster along with the pump pushers from the Horia Set. I hope this helps!
Here is the link to the video.

Where did you buy it?
I found this one on ebay. They have them there from time to time. They can be pretty expensive though so don’t be afraid to negotiate the Buy it Now price.
Was this a new brand ?How much did you by from ebay ?
Any excuse to buy another tool 😉
You’re exactly right!!
Kids are always wrong. Parents are always right. (Most of the time.)
That's what I always say!! Thanks for the back-up!
