And three years later, fortunately, it is still there. Wells Cathedral is a magic place. I've been there last july for the first time in my life. Choirs of course are excellent. People are very friendly (priests, verger, personell). And then there is...this cat, Luois. Once you meet it for the first time you can't forget it. A Church in wich animals are allowed to stay in is always a good Church.

I have heard that he has sadly passed away. And that is very sad to hear. What a distinct and unique life he had. If I could ask God to do one thing. It would be to request that Louis be granted every Mackerel available. He is going to be missed but concurrently he is likely to be fondly remembered. Terrified the dickens out of me some 10 years ago, but I don't hold that against him. Called to the cat basket next to God's throne. I think that I will miss him.

I've been to Wells! My caving partner's father explored Wookey Hole Cave in the 1950s, so on my one and only trip I made sure we visited Wells, but we didn't tour the Cathedral (it must have been shut). If I ever go back to England (I'm from Kentucky) the conundrum will be whether to retrace my earlier steps or see all new things. But if I do go back to any single place, it would have to be Wells and environs. To someone who knows something about caves, the county of Somerset is a very special place, indeed.

It's not true that all ginger cats are male; female gingers aren't as common as males, but they do exist. A far more reliable method of establishing the sex of a cat is simply to examine the equipment (or lack of it) at the rear end.

Was singing in a visiting choir...we went to take communion and while walking from the movable nave stalls to the line (there's no altar rail at the nave altar at Wells) this manky puss cuts me off. While standing waiting to receive communion, the cat sits on one of the predellas, staring at the choir, and I start losing it, giggling out of control and the other Can tenor is furious "be quiet-this is embarassing!-SHUT UP", my shoulders shaking uncontrollably cassock & surplice trembling-

Not in Wells it isn't! we like to be traditional, and Virger is the original spelling, as used by the Cathedral staff here...
From Wikipedia: "A verger (or virger, so called after the staff of the office, Latin virga = twig, rod) is a person, usually a layman, who assists in the ordering of religious services, particularly in Anglican churches."
