I am moving my mustang mare from Illinois to Kentucky. She is going to be on about an acre size paddock with grass along with 3 other mares. I will need to use a muzzle on her since she is an easy keeper but I was wondering if it would be a good idea to introduce her to her field mates without the muzzle so they could figure out herd dominance and pecking order. I’ve never used a muzzle before so I would love all the help I can get! Please respond! Thank you!

This is a great question! I would definitely leave the muzzle off when first introducing everyone so they are all on a level playing field. After that, it really depends on the horse. I feel like most horses settle in after about half an hour to an hour or so. If they are getting really picked on and run around, I might leave it off a little longer, but if they seem to be settling I wouldn’t hesitate to go ahead and start using it. My horses are out in a large herd, several of them have muzzles and several do not and they still play hard, mutually groom, and get along fine with everybody. Each herd is different. Where did you purchase the extra velco side straps, and the velco keepers? I have a Houdini as well. Pam

You should include all the extra straps that you’re recommending with the original purchase.

I know why she is using an old muzzle. The new straps are so stiff it’s really really hard getting them through the keepers. Really difficult. I’m on my third set up and not happy so far
