I have the old non SSB skywave, it was my first short wave and i still love it dearly and is a quality piece. Now it mostly stays by my flashlight and box of candles on too of the fridge where i can get to it in complete dark during power outages.

@@lovinradios6495 Thanks for the video, I would like if you could do a video with the 501 and 660 again, this time using the narrow filter on the 660 in SYNC. The 501 was using a narrower filter. The real difference between the 501 and the 660/680 is that the 660/680 don't use DSP and this means you can use SSB on an AM station using ECSS, the DSP makes the tescun audio quality very poor but I haven't heard it yet on the 501 so would be nice if you could demonstrate this please, using USB/LSB on the 501 on an SW station, not SYNC. ECSS works better at times to reduce noise and close by stations and fading and it's a key function to weeding out a weak DX station. Works best than filters when conditions are tough in a crowded band, the ultimate selectivity. If you could do this for me I would appreciate it.
Yes for sure, it is of such high quality, I wouldn't hesitate, it does so many things so well, It is a portable powerhouse of a radio, I won't even let mine set out in my room , It goes into it's case after every use.
Just take some radio h 501 looks quite nice and I love the double speakers for the stereo effect but you know I have too many radios as it is but this looks like a very good radio probably powers on Penn Lake batteries or maybe sea cells and not sure definitely comes with an adapter I'm going to look into it a little more I have a text on PL 660 and I think it's quite good it's got a long antenna but I have too many radios as it is
You can find a list of hidden commands online, one of them tells you how to route the AM to the AN-200 tecsun loop antenna, this is how i pull in the best AM, it doesn't need it, but it sure makes the signals stronger
Not convinced the 501 sounds nearly $200 better than the 660 or the Elite Executive. The 660 and the Eton are excellent performers at their price points, while the new price on the 501 puts most buyers in used Yaesu/ICOM tabletop territory pricewise. I suppose it all depends what the buyer is looking for in a radio, but for me, it's portable SSB performance at a sub-$200 price point, which is where I think the 660/680 and the Elite Executive really shine. To each his/her own, though, and not to put down anyone's choice personally.
in person , in use, triple het and this audio package are worth the distance the money carries me, it's a personal choice, I am a radio guy, went to college for it, I see the benefit, what you decide is at the end of the day the best choice for you
Obviously my money is on the venerable H-501x but I personally own the Eton Elite Exec. and the PL-368. The H-501x is definitely one order now lad. Nice collection of portables. Damn shame that the R-108 does not have SSB.
The radio itself is worthy of building a kit around it, I bought Sennheiser headphones just for it, new batteries, and I have recorded some of my best classical music on micro sd cards to listen to when the urge arises ...great system there as well...one tuning knob moves ahead one folder at a time, the other tuning knob moves along the files within that folder, great design...

With no alpha display capabilities how does it display MP3 information? It's not of great importance to me - in fact it's not of any importance to me at all on a radio and I'm all about SSB DX but I was curious since Tecsun really does seem to like to stick with the same display across all their receivers.
@@STR82DVD the display shows the file number in sequence from the card, and inside the files the display shows the audio file (mp3) number, smooth transitions

excellent, I bought a pair of 200 dollar senheiser headphones just for this radio, and it's amazing , high fidelity and loud clear reception
