The aesthetic decision to favor "toning" (dirt and tarnish) over cleaned coins is very arbitrary. When I hear the word "patina" in contexts other than antique wooden furniture with old shellac/varnish/oil finishes on them, I think of the 1990 movie "Crazy People," in which an ad exec in a life-crisis went to a mental hospital and put the other patients' unhinged "thinking outside the box" to the purpose of writing ad jingles. One of them was "Jaguar-- the car for men who like getting BJs from beautiful women." Or something to that effect. For me it evokes portly men past middle age with enough money to get into trouble, who reek of cigar smoke, and who don't mind the smell of their own farts. There's something to be said for preserving the "history" of a coin with historic value, but only up to a point, and not for bullion coins, even sovereign-mint bullion coins. Some junk silver can be found that has so much "patina" on it that the coins don't slide when you tilt your hand, as if they were collected in a cup over a fry-grille, and coated with so much sticky goo on them that the features on them are nearly imperceptible. In many cases, the choice is between filth and micro-abrasions, and what circulated coins don't have micro-abrasions already on them? -- The history of bullion coins is relatively irrelevant. The only reason they're minted is to show that some institution considered the commodity metal being sold in precise ounces at precise purities valuable enough to present in a respectable way
For 22k gold I found that letting them soak in boiling hot water for 10 minutes will also restore golds lustre if it's looking a bit dull or faded No chemicals required. For circulated coins you can also give them a gentle rubbing with the thumb while under the tap after they've been soaked in boiling water. You can also do this for constitutional silver if you want to remove grime while leaving the natural toning alone
Nice vid. I do the same thing but i finish by rinsing the tap water off with distilled water. Just in case there is junk in the tap water left on the coins.
I love a nice toned coin what I don't like is black coins that aren't toned but just dirty if you clean those I don't think they should be considered cleaned yes you removed dirt and stuff but you aren't trying to pass it off as a ms coin it is still circulated if you know what I mean.
I would be lying if I said I've never cleaned a coin, but it was only a couple and it was a few years ago. I did the baking soda trick. I've grown to love toning and even wear and grim on old silver dollars. To me if you really want them you can find blast white shinny coins, but I dig the age to silver that has just aged over time.
Baking Soda, salt, aluminum foil and hot water. Cost is nil and looks as good as your coins. I intentionally bought a nasty, beat up silver Eagle just to try it out. It worked pretty well but I would not recommend it for anything but a badly stained coin. I also bought some 1/2 ounce rounds that had some rusty looking stains on their edges and faces. It cleaned them right up. I also took off some milk spots from some coins and rounds with a soft white eraser (Staedtler Mars - get them at an art supplies or office supplies store) and they cleaned up nicely. I would only recommend this for bullion coins and rounds that you want to look nice for resale/trade that aren't in good shape to begin with.
I've found soaking coins in lemon juice (or a citric acid solution if you want to get it cheaper) for about 30-45 minutes works pretty well and doesn't cost as much.
@@EmpirePreciousMetals $15 for 5oz vs $3 for 32oz for lemon juice and even cheaper if you buy citric acid and make your own "juice" solution or have a tree. :) But it certainly is faster.
Did it on some coin those that have no real value outside of the metal content that were so dirty you could not see the detail, 2 method i used, an ultrasonic cleaner with just water or water an baking soda cycle of 5 to 10 min and to not have to drain clean the tank every time with the dirty water of the cleaning process i use small container that i put in the tank with 1/4 cup of water and just let the container float in the tank. The vibration generated reach that small container no problem. 2nd from silver dragon is aluminum foil in a bowl, 1 tbps of baking soda, about the same in table salt, pour hot / boiling water, take the coin and mix a bit the water if salt and soda has not mix fully then dip the coin and the coin must touch the aluminum, let it sit 10-20 sec take it i use silicon thongs since water is usually still really hot, rinse. Repeat if necessary after few coin empty the bowl replace foil, baking soda, and salt.
Done it twice and get better return from LCSs. Most dealers don't give a crap about toning on generic silver but for some reason the Eagles are desired blast white for retail. So be it thanks to E-Zest coin dip. 😉👍

How many euros would I lose of a 26 euros bullion like the maple which is not numismatic if I want to sell it given the fact that the metal content is only 5 euros below the coin's price? I'm not a collector, that's why I choose Maples for Silver, not to mention that I find silver more beautiful than gold when it's in brilliant condition. That's why I asked how much money would I lose if I clean it like the video, I can't stand toned silver and I will never buy rare coins.

Always clean up my 90% when I first get it. Just a little dish soap and water. There just seems to be a lot of crud on them. The soap and water doesn't change the color or anything and might not even make it more sanitary, but it puts my mind at ease.
I only use a toothbrush that’s never been used on anything except my coins house rule no touchy and I use dawn dish soap that’s it and it’s on mainly junk silver that’s gross but only dawn dish soap and a designated toothbrush so technically the bristles are less dense than silver obviously so nothing should scratch now if there’s sand or something else on the coin and you go scrubbing it’s definitely gonna scratch but that’s my routine
I stack silver dollars, and I like them shiny. So, I've cleaned more than a few of my many. I've warned my son, so he can explain it (and me) to the grandchildren if/when the need arises.
