Hasn’t Josh got superb, diction. Every word is clear. I like the way he lets the music express what it’s intended to. He never tweaks it or overacts, to draw an audience in as if the music, can’t. Also, if people just relax and listen, they’ll feel the emotion. I’m not surprised that the late Mr Sondheim was pleased that Josh was going to play Sweeney.
I interpret this version as an overstressed, emotionally repressed guy who doesn’t quite know how to react to something like this happening. He’s been through and seen so much shit….
Despite the fact that Josh is a bit young and I miss the lower register that was original to the part, there is no doubt that Josh brings operatic technique and acting chops to this part that we haven’t seen for quite some time.
His voice sounds amazing. Saw him in previews and its hard to judge for just that because he’s still finding the character. I needed more emotion from Sweeney but I’m sure he’ll find it with more shows under his belt
I didn’t wanna say it but yeah. However I listened to a couple other recordings and he nailed it there so it must have just been this one time. For pretty much the rest of the show he was solid tho
Are you serious? I’ve heard the original Epiphany and the Johnny Depp version too. Now that I’ve heard Josh’s, I must say that I’m very impressed. Personally, I like Depp’s version better but I don’t think Josh’s is awful. Sure, it sounds a bit different but I don’t think it hurts anything!
This is pitiful. He could be signing a 'new song' for a true world peace to cease WW 3, but nah....oh well. My mother who is barely holding on in a nursing home loved this guy. Hearing this is the biggest disappointment I've had. The best voice of the USA could be put to better use. I recommended a song years ago and of course, no one listens. Oh well
This is Sondheim, perhaps the most influential and greatest musical writer of all time. His work is just legendary. Of course i have sympathy for your mother but 'pitiful' is a bit of an exageration dont you think.

I mean, Josh is older than Len was when he originated the role in '79
i love how he says “bleeders” at 2:42 !!!!!

When will the chills stop? Should I call someone? Help! 😍
Rngl. My heart cries for Epiphany. 💔😢
The only thing I think is that this could be a little angrier sounding considering the situation; but he still sounds good!
I’m sorry but that last F natural is just so flat 😫

Remember that movie versions are often recorded in a studio, not live and have the benefit of technical help.

Dude... it's Sondheim. Are you serious?

it's literally sondheim, you're mental lol, 'pitiful' is quite farfetched no?
Of course this doesn’t sound like his usual music. It’s acting, my dude. He gets so fully into this character and he’s fantastic in this show.
Better use??? If you liked him as much as you say you do you’d know that this is his dream role. Lol he doesn’t owe you anything.
