    Holo taco is 11-14 dollars. 11 for the polishes. 13 to 14 for all the fun toppers or the fancier polish like the multi chrome. The quality is AMAZING for the price point. Their black nail polish is amazing. It’s called one coat black for a reason.

    Why are expensive nail polishes so BORING?! Indie companies will come out with crazy polishes like magnetic colour shifting multi chrome with holographic glitters that give crazy dimensional galaxy looking effects for like $16 MAX and brands will charge over $20 for a boring creme with maybe a little shimmer in it. If you’re gonna make an expensive polish at least make it look cool.

      Factory made polishes r not necessarily worse than handmade ones esp if you want consistency from the quality of ur polishes. But yes many indie brands are actually better because they have better QC and theyre expected to fill the gap in the market that boring big brand polishes do not fill

  • @rockpaperskizzers
    @rockpaperskizzers 2 года назад +215

    Okay, first of all, those polishes are clearly just a cash grab. Even if they were good quality, $65 for three fairly basic colors is an insane mark up.
    Secondly I wanted to give my two cents as a long time nail polish enthusiast: The storing nail polish in the fridge thing is actually a myth. You don't want the polish to get hot but it doesn't need to be cold either. Nail polish is solvent based, not water based, so it doesn't really go bad. Unopened polish left on it's own will basically last forever. The biggest enemies that make polish age are air and sunlight.
    The more air gets into the bottle, the more solvent you lose and the faster your polish thickens. You want to keep the neck of the bottle clean of buildup and make sure your bottles are firmly closed when your done with them.
    Sunlight can cause the pigments (and sometimes the solvents) in nail polish to break down; the same way anything left outside for a long time tends to get bleached by the sun. So if you just store polish in a dark place (a drawer, cabinet, closet, etc) you can mostly avoid that happening.
    Also if your polish does get thick, you can just add some nail polish thinner until you get back to the consistency you like. (Seriously I had 20-year-old polish I got from my mom, that was so thick it didn't move in the bottle, come back to life with generous use of nail polish thinner and patience). Never use polish remover for that though, it will break down the solvents and ruin the polish.
    ...Anyway, thanks for coming to my TED Talk.😅

      @y-yyy 2 года назад +8

      Thank you for this! I have some ancient nail polished that have pretty much turned into solids and was going to toss them, but I might look into buying a thinner now if it's not too expensive... Great to know that it's an option!!

    • @rockpaperskizzers
      @rockpaperskizzers 2 года назад +8

      @@y-yyy Happy to help! Polish thinner is only like 5 bucks at Sally; super affordable! If your polish is almost solid like mine was, don't be afraid to be pretty generous with the thinner. You can use a toothpick or something like that to stir it into the polish while it's still thick if you need to. And with an old polish like that, you might need to let it set for a few hours after you stir it in to let the thinner really work and absorb into the old polish. I ended up leaving mine overnight and coming back the next day to add more thinner until I was happy. Patience is key! Good luck!

    Damn... I used to be such a 1D freak and Harry and Louis were my favorite members. When they split up I did follow Harry quite closely. Sometime after his first album and Dunkirk role, he did an entire image overhaul. He decided to present himself as this artsy, philosophical, "I listen to nothing but classic rock and drive down the California coast in vintage cars" mysterious persona. He had been moving towards that for a while during the end of 1D but he still retained his personality. His actual personality. A goofy guy who told bad knock knock jokes on stage and made inappropriate jokes with his friends, a regular guy who was thrust into the spotlight at a young age and kept his ability to be down to earth and charming no matter what. Now I find his Uber woke, pretentious personality exhausting and not interesting at all. His pr people have certainly done well because I can't think of many other artists who could get away with selling overpriced, boring nail polish and then selling insanely overpriced t shirts to milk even more money out his fans. This is a cash grab. And Harry Styles is not nearly as interesting as he wants people to think he is. He also lost a lot of his charm that made him seem so authentic and sweet. Smh

He was still great the first couple years after 1D split. The current iteration of Harry Styles the brand is not one I like or connect with at all.

    Yeah, from what you've shown, it looks like any $2 Walmart nail polish ahah. I feel super bad for Harry Styles fans tbh. Reminds me of Louboutin's $60 red polish. Like wtf ppl ahaha
    Imo most good polishes don't go over $10-20. I have like a few Chanel polishes, tbh some colors are gorgeous but the brush is super thin so it's just a pain doing your nails and it takes super long. Dior's are the same iirc. YSL's and Urban Decay's are great though, but tbh it's nothing you can't find at a cheaper price.
    People recommend Holo Taco from Christine but it may be complicated for people outside of the US/Canada. As a rule of thumb (lol), It's always good to stick to the classics anyway: Essie, China Glaze, and OPI are always good choices in general. Otherwise:
    - For people in Europe: I would recommend Kiko Milano nail polishes, they're like 2€ each and they're great colors. Not a lot of glitters though. They also ship to the US.
    - For people in Asia: Canmake Japan, also a lot of k beauty brands have their own nail polish line and they're all pretty good-- especially The Saem's and Holika Holika's.
    Lastly, a good advice I got from my nail tech: if you have thin nail beds, very brittle and sensitive, I would recommend doing the Herome Nail Hardener treatment. I think there are other polishes that work the same: day 1 you add one coat, day 2 you add a second coat, day 3 you remove everything, and then you go over the cycle again for 2/3 weeks. It really works, it honestly saved my nails.

It's hard to compare to the indie brands I know of like ht and fl, as they base their pricing off of the complexities of the polish but I have found a similar polish to pleasing's Pearly Top that I'll use below.
    An Iridescent polish similar to pearly tops, Crystal at Fun Lacquer, could run you $14 for 12 mL/0.4 FL oz which is $1.17/mL vs Pearly Tops from Pleasing which is 20$ for 13 mL/0.43 FL oz which is $1.54/mL which is a 0.37 cent difference per mL. But you also get a set of alphabet decals with the Pleasing polish, which a set of nail decals from other nail brands can run you $3-$7 which, the pleasing polish being $20 minus a $15.21 (basing the price off of FL's $1.17/mL) polish would be a $4.79 decal which isn't a horrible price for two sheets of decals that provide several of each letter. So, it's not /actually/ that pricey per nail polish IF you factor in the price of the decals and adjust for the extra mL (most polishes are in 12 mL)
    The 65$ bundle also comes with 3 sets of decals so, if we assume each decal is $4.79 and we have three, $14.37, which means the bundle is $50.63 for the 4 polishes which is $12.66 which isn't bad from an indie perspective - IF they can compare quality wise which can be a personal preference. I've bought
    $14 bottles from Fun Lacquer that take 6 coats to be opaque but I've also only needed 2 coats of a $5 sally hansen to be opaque. These are also pearly's which I think are kind of meant to be slightly translucent anyways so it's kind of up to you. okay thats all rant over i hope you dont do the same math and this was for not

      tl:dr if you get the bundle and calculate for the decals - its 12.66$ per bottle.

      I think the unique bottle are also something to take into consideration. Not only is the shape of the bottles custom for the brand but each shade has a unique handle too. This is likely to increase the cost of manufacturing. The decorative element of the bottle could also make these polishes more "worth it" to someone who likes to display their bottles or just has an interest in collecting nail polishes with unique bottles.
      The quality of these polishes looks pretty good to me.
      Whether or not these are "worth it" really comes down to personal preferences. I'm looking forward to seeing more shades release. I love the look of the bottles and the formula looks good, I'm just waiting for a color that wows me.

  • @gayplastic1237

    While these prices are overpriced for a mass manufactured polish, no matter the quality... Light coloured frosted polishes rarely have a non streaky quality, just because of the nature of the pearls and pigments. It's hard to have an opaque polish without covering the frosty pearls. It's part of why gel polish is incredibly streaky, as most gel isn't a pure matte (it's also because the light has to be able to reach all of the gel put down in a single coat, which is also why you want to do incredibly thin layers, but that's besides the point. I personally would have done 3-4 thin coats of the lighter polishes, or layered them over a matte white. Anyways, just pointing out that they aren't bad quality, or that this review doesn't prove they're bad quality. Also, before I get anyone swooping in saying I'm just making excuses for Harry, I literally do not care about that man. I'd argue Amanda knows more about him than I do. I just used to be an avid nail art enthusiast (that sounds so extravagant when I'm literally just trying to say I was obsessed with nail polish and nail art).

      Was hoping to see a comment like this high up. I saw one coat of that white pearl on Amanda and went... actually that's impressive for a white pearl! Often they're either virtually invisible on the first coat or so chalky that the shimmer gets swallowed up.
      The price on these is... eh, listen, it's more about the fact that it's merch than the fact that it's nail polish. There are pretty good nail polishes for $5 that do the same thing. But I won't lie- if this were a fandom I was enthusiastically part of? $20 a pop wouldn't be that bad, I'd not think of it as paying for the polish itself so much as paying for the combination of the fact that it's nail polish and it's fandom merch (I fully admit I bought things from the MAC Star Trek collection that I absolutely have no use for. But they have the Starfleet logo!!!). If he wants to be taken seriously as a real brand that's not just "the Harry Styles thing," he'll have to bring that price point down.

    Also you don't need expensive polishes to have interesting colors! Sinful Colors and LA Colors are two brands whose bottles are usually $1-3 a bottle and they have all kinds of interesting formulas and finishes! Also also a $5 bottle of Sally Hansen Insta Dry will work fantastically as a top coat.

So I've been using gel strips with ohara and have loved how easy it is and how long they last (about 2 weeks with fresh strips). But I do take breaks between using the strips as they can cause some nailbed damage (and you have to remove them carefully) but still a better alternative than fake nails in that regard.
