Wow Caleb you nailed it once again having these guys share their knowledge and perspectives. As I mentioned within the comment section of another video, I spent late last week and all weekend at Port Mansfield. Expecting the absolute worst, I was extremely surprised at how little evidence there was of a massive fish kill. In fact, I only saw two floating carcasses and virtually none on the shorelines. Aside from a strong norther that blew in Saturday, the winds were manageable so the water was a spectacular aqua green color most of the time. In terms of fish and fishing, I saw tons of bait, of many varieties, the entire trip. I saw multiple species of birds working and diving. I saw dozens of dolphin within the bay system. Most importantly, I caught a lot of fish; trout-wise, nothing spectacular but good numbers (about 1/3 of normal) and quite a few reds up to around 30 inches. All the fish fought hard and appeared very healthy. Every single one was released with no ill effect of being caught. My ultimate take-away was that the system was rocked, no doubt, but that it is extremely resilient and will rebound strongly provided we're all good stewards and show the utmost respect for our wonderful bay system.
Caleb I can’t applaud you enough a thank you for all the useful information you put out there for everyone and really bringing it all full circle with different guides, biologists, and spokesmen for our entire gulf coast fisheries. I strive to one day influence and knowledge people, just as you do, about how precious and valuable our fisheries really are. Keep it goin man 👍
Alazan bays saltinty increases bc it used to be an old dried up creek bed. When it rains alot, the salt that was been on land has seeped back into the bay making the saltinty rise. Not 100% sure about that, but that's what my grandpa used to tell me when I was growing up.
Great video. On that salt question - good question and good answers. All I can add is a couple of things, 1) In the 70's there was an old abandoned salt processing facility in the Laguna Salada. 2) With all the salt domes in the Gulf Coast region, some of the old-timers thought that “maybe” there was an exposured salt dome under the water.
What I appreciate about this community so much is the respect for the fishery and being a good steward of the sport and the wildlife. Think my Flatsworthy membership will be expiring in the next few months. I’ll have to get on that.
This video was an absolute wealth of knowledge! Would love to here more from these two I feel like I could learn a whole lot from them! Thanks for what you do Caleb and here's to a speedy recovery of east matagorda. Get well soon.
Don’t hesitate on Dr McKee’s book, either. If you fish the Laguna, or coastal bend it’s got a really interesting history of the structure of the bays, why the passes are where they are, and why what lives there lives there.
Like I mentioned in another video of yours, went out to port mansfield as planned Sunday. It was pretty sad to see. The marina was filled with snook and mullet. When we got out on the water saw huge black drum and, lots of trout. Huge trout was what was so sad. Even saw a huge sea turtle. The good news caught plenty of healthy trout! All released, got the little one in on the action had him release a few. We did catch dinks and dunks. The trout were out there though. We caught what would of been 9 keepers (2 1/2 of us). We went looking for trout specifically, but heard from others the reds were out and biting. Thanks for your videos again, great work!
Great episode Caleb. Really appreciate it. Love the shout out to speckledtruth also. Keep what you need and release the rest. Right now, release them all for a bit. It can’t hurt.
Thank you so much for taking the time to do this. What a great video. Man I could sit and listen to Dr. David till he got tired of talking. I'm gonna pick up 2 copies of each book. 1 for me and 1 for my dad who taught me how to read the water and gave me the greatest addiction ever of fishing and loving our Texas coast.

caleb, ive been trying to get ahold of Scott Murray but I cannot find his contact info anywhere. Would you mind sending me an email he may have? Thanks!
Thank you once again Caleb for bringing these two experts together for this highly informative show.

Dr McKee is such an incredible person. Thanks so much for the knowledge you share with your show, much appreciated.
It’s an honor to call him a friend, no doubt.
Good stuff capt

Thanks alot for what you're doing lately dude, appreciate you keeping us informed!
Rate of evaporation of ocean water combined with the fresh water rainfall can alter the salinity.
The soil is very rich in salt, so the runoff takes more salt to the bay.
Some good info Capt!! Glad to hear from some “old salts” about previous freezes and the impacts they had on the fisheries. Thanks again.
Excellent! Thank you for getting him on.
Great one per usual Capt- enjoyed hearing from the experts

Got my world class Texas trout of tomorrow book ordered!

You must love matagorda the way I do...I'm so sad man that place was my home away from home

Great video!! Lots of great information! Thank you for taking the time to put this together.
Salinity increases because the surrounding area is an ancient dried lake bed. And when it rains it washes the salts into the bay.
Thanks for what you’re doing. Catch and release for me.
Thank you for the continued updates. Appreciate the knowledge
Thanks for doing all these great videos and all your helpful tips
Great video Caleb
Caleb, how can I get the Wayne Davis commentary or podcast
Check out his Facebook page.
Great Info!
I wonder why the fish didnt swim out into the gulf, surely it stayed warmer..
The salinity raises due to the fact that the soil upstream has pushed the salt to the top through evapotransperation
😉
Looked like Dr. McKee had something to say so many times and just missed the moment. Still, this is a great video! Well done.
North Padre canals had 100,000 lbs of dead fish removed so far. In todays channel 3 news. Mostly mullet but some bigger fish were mixed in.
I usually hit the heart on every comment, but I just can’t on this one. I do appreciate the comment, though! 😢
CC,,, I think w his idea coming thru ur channel ,, He will da most bang ! ( Inform more Movers & Shakers ,, Yea ? ) GB Yall
Awesome show!
Are you still running your jh or have you fully switched to a Simmons?
My JH. Simmons is my partner’s boat.
That's got to be the best of any utube video iv seen made , with some old salt and a lot of heart for are fishery.
Always looking for a good read about our fishery. Thanks for the book recommendation
I'll do my part. I won't fish for trout at all in 2021. They've never been my prefered target anyway.
Redfish are LYFE! 😂
Trout Lives Matter🤙
@@stacycat33 Yep, let them live. Kill the good tasting ones instead.
as always great stuff

maybe the rain water is picking up sodium chloride from the soil which would increase salinity after it runs into the bay? lol
Got it
Capt Caleb TV guess my geology degree finally came in handy after all these years 😂😂
@@lespaulplayer1234512 your parents knew you would use it someday! Lol
The run off disturbs salt that has settled on the bottom
The land behind the bay is a salt flat..
What an idiot! ( in napoleon dynamite voice)

Caught a few fish at san luis pass the other day some a little bit of bait then good ol dolphin came in and scared em
New intro !!
I learned some new stuff during the off week!
In my hood and didn't even call.
Figured you were working, pops!
Dr. McKee might have a better video backdrop than you 😉
Great video with lots of awesome info! It’d be cool to do a saltwater legends interview series.
The reason it does that, is because that is how god intended for it to be. What do I win?
Just checked. Plumb out of participant ribbons! 🤦🏻♂️😂
Always a bridesmaid, never a bride.
Trivia answer - the runoff picks up all the evaporated salt on the ground surface from evaporation
Great vid Capt, sure glad you sat down with him and did this.
