Good ideas.
Thank you for making these videos! So helpful! Love the fact you not only instruct us “how to “ use each tool, but also how to sharpen them as well! You answered so many “questions” ! Can’t wait to start practicing, and apply my new found knowledge!
Well I'm broken. I'm watching this while I can't sleep. I put it on and 2 minutes in I thought to myself this was a bad idea, this video is way to exciting lol and it is! Can't wait to head to the shop and do this with mine!
So glad I found this video. I have been having trouble with my parting tool. Won't cut as it should. I will try your sharpening suggestions.
I’m just novice turner A long time ago someone gave me some basic turning tools and that particular parting tool was one of them. I never knew for sure what is was for until today. Thank you for explaining that and how to sharpen it.
Rob displays his shiv collection.
Please more wood turning vids. I'm very green when it comes to that tool.
So far we are not having a lot of folks watch our turning videos. Pretty poor audience response actually
Well, that sucks. I guess there's not a lot of turners out there. I think there's too much focus on bigger things. There's a lot of skill and craftsmanship in turning a simple pen!
I already had the CBN grinding wheel but this new angle on my parting tool is fantastic. Thank you for all you do.
Excellent. Thank you for sharing.
Great advice thanks
Excellent.
Many thanks.
Thank you so much for making theses videos as a beginner they are a great help what l like there is no stupid music just you speaking keep safe
Regards

Thank you so much for making these videos Rob!!! I just got a small lathe (my first) last week and am getting accessories and cutting tools as I go. Your videos have been a Godsend for showing exact tool placement and useage! It's nice to be able to see exactly where and when the chisel should contact the wood, my first attempt at turning made some quick firewood, but things have improved vastly just by watching your videos!! Thank you again!! ALSO.. I noticed all of the US Navy patches on your bib, I am a retired US Navy Chief, were you also in the military!? If so, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!!
How well does the diamond shape parting tool work in making the ends even when starting to turn a bowl? Is it better to have a flat parting tool when doing that?
Thanks for your comments
Just started using a mini lathe. If you go to craft store they want to sale you everything. I like your style because you show how to use each one and the technique of using the tools. Having a lot turning tools to look at is not a good thing! I need more wood! Thanks again!
Glad you find our stuff helpful
Thank you very much!!!
no problem
Sharp, it is also a very good 1/8 inch skew chisel.
Sharp is good
Great videos. Where do I find that Wolverine grinding jig?
Hey Rob.
Thanks for all of your great content. Amongst the best!
My question is: do you wax your wolverine platen? Any other useful maintenance tips for sharpening system?
Thanks
I starting out looking at possibly wood turning. What type of lathe are you using and what lathe would you suggest for a beginner and which tools?
I second this question!
Mini lathes make the barrier to entry quite low. You should contact Craft Supplies USA, friends of mine and they specialize in setting folks up in turning. Dale Nish and his son Darryl started that business, innovators in woodturning, you wont go wrong.
@@RobCosmanWoodworking Thank you for your reply. I am in Ontario so that might be a bit problematic.I also believe in buying once and do not mind making a reasonable initial investment in equipment that will meet current and future needs. Can you suggest someone in Canada?
What lathe are you using? It has a Canadian flag on it?
I don't even do wood turning and I couldn't stop watching.
Its the Canadian accent!!
Crazy of watching the video
Will a 6” cbn wheel work?
Is it always necessary to sand a turned piece? I was thinking that perhaps if the chisel were sharpened on a fine stone it would leave a surface ready for finish but I'm uncertain if it makes a difference when working on a lathe. Thank you for the nice video.
Yes it makes a big difference on the lath but the difference depends on if you are doing a searing cut or a scraping cut. You can do both with a sharp chisel the scraping cut must be sanded. The searing cut only needs a very light sanding or possibly no sanding
@@RobCosmanWoodworking Thank you for your reply.
Rob I don’t know what happened but I don’t get notifications that you have posted a video anymore. I am subscribed and have the notification bell activated. I saw someone else had mentioned the same thing on your last short video.
Take care.
Simon Gniadkowski I did that it still didn’t work.
Lots of folks are reporting this across youtube. Go into your youtube settings and check out your notification settings. I think youtube did something that turned them off
Why the 2 different angles?
I can't find a CBN grinding will!! What is it and where can I get it??

Show me how to sharpen drill bit

Almost like the clip point on a Bowie knife.

If you have not had the ever loving crap scared out of you by having a set of calipers wiz by your head 90 knocking nothing with this trick, you have not played with your lathe enough. 😁
Afterward it’s funny....so long as they were not made by Starrett....
Then it just kinda makes you wanna punch something once you’ve re-collect your thoughts.
Yes that would not be fun
Never, ever put your finger in the ring of the dividers when you touch it to the spinning wood.
Good tip

Rob, are there any other RUclips content creators that you'd consider as skilled or more skilled than you in woodworking? Thanks.
Luther Shealy and Super Dave Benson!
Dear Rob, I love you, your family & your woodworking! You are REAL!
• I regret to say, I HATE your new RUclips Cover Pages-I don’t know what they are officially called.
• I guess RUclips rolled out a bunch of new Cover Page templates recently, to be eye-catching and click-baiting.
• I say-I know-they are CHEAP looking, that they are used by RUclips posters posting videos of public “Karen” freak-outs.
• Wanting to build an audience is fine. Frankly, I feel your target audience is 180° the opposite of the cover pages you have chosen.
• Purple is bad! 🤯!
The word is video “thumbnail image” I don’t know if you made this connection Purple Heart project is rob’s heart and soul and is likely why he uses that color
John Doe Dear John Doe,
• No, of course I didn’t make the comment against the Purple Heart organization or anything like that! I must say, I distrust your reply...!
• I mentioned purple, because the backgrounds of a lot of these thumbnail cover-pages are PURPLE, as some of Rob’s are, and I say they look CHEAP, I say they’re antithetical to his work, and I say they look way too much like cheap click-bait advertising on any platform.
• And I think I made myself clear previously, and I REALLY suspect your motives.
Thanks for your concern David. Our speciality is woodworking, not thumbnails. Luther designs these himself and has no background in graphic design. Even though they are not up to your standards, our views, subscribers, and revenue have increased substantially. They are helping catch peoples eye. We hope you come here for the content of the actual videos, and to learn something about woodworking, not simply to critique our thumbnails.
David Pearce yeah man, I don’t really know what motives I could have in suggesting that you shouldn’t be too critical of something that might be connected to a really stand up non-profit organization for veterans.
John Doe Except, of course, for the fact that I wasn’t. And you’re just some troll looking to pick fights.
• I was making a constructive criticism, even though it was very fervent.
IF Rob’s background color refers to anything to do with the Purple Heart Foundation or Purple Heart recipients, and I missed the allusion, I’m quite sorry.
• But, in my defense, a true Purple Heart 💜 would be much better at getting his meaning across.
.....sizzle....
• Meanwhile, I’m just trying to help Rob’s RUclips channel, & Rob himself, from looking anything like the hoi polloi RUclips posters who post nothing but an animated or angry face and an eye-catching background.
• I thought that’s what REAL “conservatives” were supposed to do, stand up for woodworking, good quality, effort, thoughtfulness.

RobCosman.com You bet I do, Rob: I come for your great content! I’ve loved it for many, many years. You inspire me.
• I’m sorry I was so vehement-but, truth be told, it’s BECAUSE I see the obvious value in your work-the impeccable quality-that I wanted to guide you away from what I see as down-market thumbnails.
