It's not a family, it's his factory. Do any of his workers get a living wage, or ist cheap food & board with pocket money? Are they allowed to go do other jobs, go to get further education? Are the wives allowed to have a social life outside of the factory, have other male friends? How many of them are married to him out of economic necessity but would love to have a home with just their own family? Cultures are different all over the world, everyone lives differently... but having your own family and partner is pretty universal, I find it very hard to believe all 39 wives are happy sharing one miserable old man with 38 others.
