There is a rule about eating if someone left the table. Hot food is ok to eat, cold food you should wait. HOWEVER, I don't think this rule counts for family or very close friends. It's more appropriate for business lunches or lunches with acquaintances because you don't want to finish first and leave them feeling uncomfortable because they're still eating. But when it's family or close friends it doesn't matter. They should be comfortable hanging out with you either way.
