This is such an incredible home architecturally, and now it’s a beautifully designed home, too! I agree with not painting brick floors, especially if it’s reclaimed brick with all the patina created by time.

I hear American designers often pronounce his name “cater” but in Burkina Faso where he is from it’s pronounced like “kah-dare” - I can tell you appreciate his art and figured you’d appreciate knowing this context as well 😊
Not my style, but an absolutely beautiful home. I love your play on proportions and height. There is just enough detail without it feeling overwhelming, yet the layers make this home so rich and pleasant. Bravo!

I like that you kept the shelves and original brick floors. These elements can be expensive to replace or remove and, as in the case of the brick floors, difficult or impossible to reproduce if they were done with historic salvaged brick. A bibliophile's books are our drug of choice. Although now that we have new technology and our libraries of 1,000s reside on electronic media, 35 years ago, even my kitchen had floor to ceiling shelf covered walls, tucked away from the cooking action for cook books, children's home work aides and games. My bedside had stacks beside it as did my desk. What you did is what people used to do 100 yrs ago when they were lucky enough to have room: Leave some shelves open. It symbolizes the ultimate luxury: space of mind where clarity can grow. Like you, they would hang a picture, sometimes over books tucked behind, or like you did, back in a niche created by removing shelves. (I once did this with pressed fern leaves in identical document frames and white matting. A crisp repeating pattern. I had little money and few books. ) I've placed plants near a window. (but NO candles -BIG fire hazard; OK, I've put electric lights of all kinds -Grin) This is why people put built-ins in: they are such flexible spaces. They can be painted in the color of the walls like you did, lovely and moody. Or painted with contrasting interiors or even wall papered. Leaving the balanced open spaces is visually calming and beckons the mind, whispering new ideas, discoveries and inventions. The combined books and treasures with open space speaks of evolving abundance. We don't need to display everything all of the time. My mother would change her "vignettes" 2 or 3 times a year, rotating beloved possessions - and leaving space. This is how you can enjoy that inherited vase that makes you smile but is not quite your style, or that quirky souvenir from your last vacation for awhile without having to live with it year round. (the cupboards below in some built ins, and that lovely storage in the laundry room is a great space to store these beloved pieces) So, I clearly love bookcases of all kinds. And I loved that you made a classic element fresh and up-date in the media room.

Wow what a difference. I have a house just like that except the beams are redwood similar to Pottery Barn. I also have the same fireplace with the same stone. I thought about doing what you did and paint it natural steel/black. I watched this a few times. Great ideas. I think I will steal some of them:)

"Table cloth are back in " hahahhahaa At my house they never left the table. I absolutely loooooove table cloths especially April Cornell or Ralph Lauren they are absolutely stunning
I really love the use of the off centered rectangular ottoman/coffee table, balanced with the two rotating ottomans. Normally, it seems like people center the coffee table, making it hard to reach. What a practical solution for being able to actually use the coffee table and still be a beautiful balance for the eye.
