    Hi Rick, it's great to see those boys, they're what I look forward to every day, I even go through the older video's if you haven't done a fresh one, my you and they always make my day, thank you for todays video I love watching them eat especially when you give them their grain they seem to hypnotise me, I had never seen an horse eat like that untill big T' and Buddy, maybe I'm weird, though I love being with and watching animals I think that they're more interesting than humans, maybe it's because with animals you don't always have to talk, body language is all they need and they got your number, they're the best and make this horrible place we all seem to think belongs to us a better place to be, animals were roaming earth long before we came along and ruined it, my what a shit hole the world is becoming, anyhow you and the boys have a great day, big hugs to all xxxxx

    I’m glad it’s starting to look like spring down there. I’m sure the horses are glad to. Up here there’s a ton of snow on the ground. And my furnace is broke. I am freezing! They said it should be fixed by Thursday or Friday😬Oh well. It’s nice to see that it’s spring

    Good morning to Rick and the Boys **HUGS & PRAYERS** Always good to have an update on you guys. My two horses are like Buddy and Mr. T. They run the pasture all year, I supplement hay, and oats and alfalfa pellets too. I have thankfully never had one of my horses colic. Thank God for that. Have a Blessed Day!

    Sometimes i threw big flake of hay on the pasture but instead of putting it on one spot i walked around the pasture threw handfuls of hay few feet apart from each other. that way the horses were able to sniff their food out, walk around and eat little pieces but there was one fat mare that ran trough and tried to take a bite of every pile before others got to them.

    Smokey likes to hang around Dad's favourite places, the garage where Dad is working on his various projects or in the horsy salon where he occupies Dad's chair. He enjoys Dad's company although Dad shoots him with the BB gun when he is looking for a fierce fight with the neighbour's cat. Obviously he is not resentful. ;-)

    Foghorn looked good! I remember your 1st videos after you put him in the field then put food out for the boy's so they came trotting around the corner and came to a screatching halt!
    That was hilarious!
    Buddy's agent! LMAO! He looks like Hollywood, I love his colors! Golden mane on a darker tan body ( Buckskin?...I'm not sure what horse people call that color..?)
    So, I've wondered how you know how much to feed them. It sounds like on one hand you can put all the food out for them you want and they won't eat themselves to death, like my sisters poor dumb dead goat did a few years back.
    But then on the other hand it sounds like you need to be careful what you do put out because if it's something they really like they just might over eat.
    I'm not a horse guy although I love them, I'm basically ignorant about them and most of what I've learned, has come from you.
    I rode enough when I was in school to have been kicked, bit, bucked, stomped and had my foot stood on, but horse care and health issues like Colicking, foundering, are terms I've heard but know little about and what causes it , Ive looked it up before and will again because I'm just wanting to know, and it seems you really need to know your stuff even in feeding them because there are alot of factors like time of year and temperature. Anyway I always enjoy seeing your horses and animals, cat, Rooroo. I'm suprised you don't have a big ole dog! I know you get a lot of love from them and hope they are around for many more years!
    Have a nice day Rick!

    Round bales has a higher risk of containing botulism as well because of the moisture and higher risk of a dead animal. you wont see it because your not going to be up and close in the hay.Smaller hay bales you can see what is in your hay. You pick up a few flakes and shake them out .

    I had just added 2 5 month old kittens to my home. Ruffles and Snaggle-puss. Very playful, and are good boys. Well they are being kittens.
    Sounds like you put the food out in away to get your boys to use thier senses. Yeah if they leave some food behind then they are definitely getting enough.

    Best reason also to not feed off a round bale is because a horse will eat a hole in the bale and will sit there with their face in that hole and breath in all of that dust and spores. My husband is an equine vet and if I had $1 for every horse he sees that gets heaves from sitting on a damn round bale Is be rich. Don’t feed horses rounds

    Those of us that go to work everyday, feeding twice a day is the way it is. I do wish I could feed smaller meals throughout the day. Plus I have a very aggressive mare to my pony, so they have their own eating stations. You're lucky that your horses eat together like they do.

      I love that attitude. would be even better if someone said: those of us that have no money to buy our horses good quality hay, feeding them crap is the way it is. Perhaps you should've thought about any possible problems you won't be able to solve due to your work BEFORE owning a horse? and I'm not talking only about the number of meals a day. Never wondered if it's not others being lucky, but you sucking?

    Horses can get lung issues by having their nose buried in round bales for long periods of time sometimes short periods of time. Especially if mold spores we’re caught up in the round bale and have a semi-warm place to grow inside the Bail. It just takes a few mold spores and a little bit of moisture in a little bit of heat generated from the bail being bound up to start growing . It’s a good idea to break open even the square bales. At least into the flakes. Just some useless information everyone probably already knows. :-) But horses will just dive into it because they’re hungry but deer, will not even go around it Even if they are starving. Something I have observed personally.

    Does anyone know about the sugar highs and lows of pasture grass? I was told that early morning and late at night when it cools is when there is a lower glucose level in grasses. Apparently during the day, the glucose levels are higher. Higher glucose=higher calorie intake. I am curious if anyone else has anything to share regarding this.

  • @mandyc1091
    @mandyc1091 5 лет назад +5

    Again this is why only allowing your horse out in pasture during the day or only a few hours a day causes health problems. No gradual introduction to spring grass. Instead pastures get rested and allowed to grow to Long before letting horses on it. Horses pay all the time for the way keeping them suits hoomans

    • @ThinkLikeAHorse

      Horse accept things or don't
      they accept me putting one on but I rarely do. I put blankets on them twice since I owned them, once was moving to texas in a snow storm they were in a trailer with highway wind and open windows in 20 degrees, so I put blankets on them and one time it got in teens and raining wet weather.

    what would you do if your horse has founder and you only have grass pastures How long does it take to get better what does it look like

    • @texastwisterbar
      @texastwisterbar 5 лет назад +1

      Debbie In Manchester you use a grazing muzzle on them but you must monitor them keeping anything on their head

    • @charliebob8199
      @charliebob8199 5 лет назад

      It can take many weeks to recover from a bout of laminits/founder if caught early,though the horse will always be at higher risk at peak seasonal times of the year. If not caught early enough it can be fatal as the hoof structure is damanged.
      I use electric fencing to section an area of grazing off if i have to restrict grazing & replace grass with hay. I dont agree with grazing muzzles & i think they are dangerous & they shouldn't be kept on a horse 24/7 as it alters their natural chewing,which then affects teeth etc.
      Rick has done a video on founder & has info on his web page 😁

    • @jsvendsen6256
      @jsvendsen6256 5 лет назад +2

      Matthew Knight, I'd say that it has more to do with what's in the bale. I've been baling before and people who know their pasture are able to separate the bales out according to what it contains. I'm getting a great mixture in my round bales, made with many types of grasses. On top of that it's organic. So lucky we are. I make piles in my pasture as well rather than free feeding or they just stand around and gorge all day/night. It's much more work, but worth the effort. If you have the opportunity, go haying with your retailer if you can, and you will know for sure what's in your bales.
