“We were born sick, you heard them say it” referring how religious groups will typically refer to homosexuality as a sickness and a plague which can be healed and not a valid sexuality. “Command me to be well” again referring to that ideology that one can be cured of homosexuality. The line also sounds similar to “command me to hell” which is what some religious folks will do towards gay people. (Not sure if this was intentional by Hozier though I thought it made sense) “Offer me that deathless death” On the surface this line is referring to the afterlife of Heaven everyone seeks. The following line expresses “Oh good God let me give you my life” showing the extent at which gay people will go to in order to be “accepted” into heaven, though are ultimately denied in many peoples beliefs. Furthermore, through a deeper analysis “deathless death” is a direct contradiction which infers that the person was never truly alive to begin with. This directly reflects how gay people have had to/have to conform to heterosexual standards in fear of being cast out, discriminated against or hate crimed. This constant state of concealment of oneself cannot truly be identified as living, and therefore they cannot die as they never “lived” in the first place. The chorus repeats “take me to church” as if one needs to go to church and repent for the “sin” of homosexuality. It shows how gay individuals have felt as if their mere existence is a sin and they have to feel sorry for it. There’s more but I feel like these are the major, not so obvious ones.

My lover's got humor
She's the giggle at a funeral
Knows everybody's disapproval
I should've worshiped her sooner
If the Heavens ever did speak
She's the last true mouthpiece
Every Sunday's getting more bleak
A fresh poison each week
"We were born sick", you heard them say it

The only Heaven I'll be sent to
Is when I'm alone with you
I was born sick, but I love it

Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
If I'm a pagan of the good times
My lover's the sunlight
To keep the Goddess on my side
She demands a sacrifice
Drain the whole sea
Get something shiny
Something meaty for the main course
