Could have used a dehydration state from the desert to generate mirages (satisfies the 'it's not real' theme). Killing the fruit is one way to stay hydrated otherwise you keep having to defeat more and more powerful enemies.

A watermelon in the desert was a great start! It could have slowly dried up because heat, desert, watermelon and determine the real watersource oasis amongst the Fata Morganas: fits the theme.. Making everything a shooter is so lazy
if you need lore i got it for you: It was the year of our fruit lord: 12 Banana noon the shotgun king cherry demanded that all watermelons kill evil fruit. Walter, a simple watermelon was hired for the job, armed with his magical shapeshifting pistol "Jomethra" bravely stood his ground against the "Juicy boys" cannibal fruit who eat other fruit, this can only end in one way.. Fruit salad, Yummy-Yummy!
