This has got to be, hands down, one of the best explanations for picking the right prop for your motor, out there. Especially since I have a 9.9 Mercury.
Love the video great advice just one thing I’ve learned from school castle nuts when setting should never be tightened more but less till you see the opening of the cotter pin hole
I've got a 1948 Evinrude zephyr 5.4 HP, on a 1436 with just me (200 lbs) and a trolling motor, I plan on just testing props that will fit it, but I do have the original one from 1948
I recently purchased my first boat a 13' Saturn inflatable, and I'm planning to get a 6 hp motor maybe a 12. I'm primarily going to be the only one using the boat for fishing, but on occasion cruise around with the wife and kids. Great video
I currently have a Yamaha 15hp. It has a OEM 9.25 x 10.5 prop currently. I do a good bit of trolling and it is too fast at idle. What pitch would you recommend to slow me about 1 - 1.5 mph
What rom increase did you see when dropping to the 7.5” pitch? Considering the same, maybe even a 5” pitch. Im a hair lower at 4800rpm currently with the stock 9”
I’m having issues finding a prop for my mercury/force 9.9hp. I am overreving it by a long shot. But you just can’t find any anymore. Any info on where and how to get one looking for a 8.5-9x 13-15
I need help. In two weeks I will get my twin Suzukis DF150APX, the baot is a AS Marine 26 GL lenght 7.8 meter, weight wet and 2 Persons 2600 Kilogramm (about 5700 pound) . What props for speed did you recommend. Thanks for answer
I have a 30hp Yamaha 2 stroke sounds like it reving properly it’s on a 415 boat only 23mph it has the pitch it came with second hand it looks like 11 pitch what would u recommend I do to get a higher top speed
I have a 24’ pontoon boat. I have a 2010 Mercury 90hp 2-stroke with a 13-3/4X15 3 blade prop. I get about 20mph WOT at about 5300-5400rpm. I’m thinking of switching props. I’m leaning 14x13 (bigger diameter lower pitch) or possible 14-1/2X16 (bigger diameter higher pitch). My main goal is to get the boat up closer to 25mph. Is this possible or is my 90hp just incapable of getting more speed.
It looks like the RPM range for your motor is 5000-6000 so you're not far off from being correctly propped. More speed is going to be tough. For speed, you want smaller diameter higher pitch. For holeshot you want lower pitch and same or higher diameter depending if you are having issues with prop slip. If you change prop manufactures, such as going from a mercury prop to a solas prop, RPM changes may not translate with geometry changes between the props.
Check out Turning Point Propellers, they say they give you much better performance. I have an 18ft with a 60 hp 11 pitch Solas prop and hit only 5000 RPM and about 19.5 mph, Im thinking it can do a tad better with a better prop, maybe not 25 but something over 20, and you should always have a spare anyway. Spare props save weekends.
hi, we have a 2019 mercury 40hp 3 cylinder outboard motor, the propeller can spin very freely clockwise and anti clockwise, byt the only thing that concerns me is the propeller has about 1/5 " play moving back and forth, we tighten the lock nut and secure with tab washer already. Is this normal? By the way, the serial # of the motor is 1C560816, we tried to search the mercury marine site to look for the pro gear housing diagram to check if we missed a washer/spacer or something, but the diagram shown is quite different than the one on our motor, can you help? Thanks
What would you recommend for a motor that is asked to push upstream in rivers that are full of sand, a few rocks and pretty shallow. We try to use the lightest motor possible. I’m thinking somewhere around 20 horse. Would you lower the pitch to get more thrust?
For a super lightweight motor the new Yamaha F25s are ridiculously light, around 120lbs. As far as propping goes, yeah I'd say a lower pitch for more low end power against current would help you. If you find your prop getting chewed up by rocks and sand a stainless propeller might be an idea too.
You'll see to check its RPM at max throttle to see if you're able to improve it. If its under the optimal RPM range you could go down in pitch for more speed or if its topping out you could go up for higher top end.
I have a 1992 40 horse Johnson and wondering What is the correct pitch for it ? Now it has a 11 3/4 × 17 I was thinking about getting a 10 or 12 pitch do I have to change the 11 3/4 to a smaller diameter?
I have been having an rpm issue. Im only getting 4500 rpm at full. I dropped 3in with no difference. Motor is a 2020 40hp Merc 4 stroke. Can i tighten the throttle cable or adjust it? I think it's not reaching the stop at full
You can definitely adjust the throttle cable if you feel like its not opening up fully. Dropping 3in in pitch with no RPM change does sound like its being limited by something. I have this video here where I installed the throttle cables that might be helpful for adjusting them: ruclips.net/video/9HkzMkX-WJg/видео.html
@@rainerneumeister5239 Yes assuming your engine has the power to turn the larger prop to the max RPM range. But likely you might be slower to get on plane
Depends on what your RPMs are at top speed. If they are 6000+ you can go up to a 10p for a higher top speed. If they are lower than 5500 I wouldn't change anything.

Thank you for feedback! I'm glad you found it helpful. I see this question asked a lot and really wanted to get some concrete info out there.

I've always been interested in those inflatables, seems like a great way to get out on the water!

Propeller nut torque is in the service manual. Suzuki DF40-70 should be 40 ft/lb
That’s was a great! Explanation! Thanks

Gotta get a tach to read your RPMs. If you are outside the RPM range go up or down in pitch to get in that range.
The best pitch for the 30 Yamaha 2 stroke is 13. The standard 9 7/8 ×13p is in the goldilocks zone.

You need a bigger engine 😊
Thanks this was a big help
So i need to get a higher pitch for my 6hp if i want more top speed? With 2 ppl in it its slow. Can i get an extra 2mph or so then? Its a 1236 jon
You need more horsepower 😂
What would u reckon for a 2013 yamaha F15 4 stroke, I want maximum performance.
Get yourself an RPM Tachometer - amzn.to/3j7mNZF and let me know your RPMs at full throttle and your current propeller pitch

There is typically some back and forth movement even with the lock nut, it comes from the gear train.

A mud motor,
Surface drive or long tail
what prop would you recomend for a mercury 9.9 pushing a 14ft john boat for speed i feel like mine is too slow.
You'll have to check your RPMs to know if you can go up or down in pitch
Is the 8.5 pitch stock?
So if my merc 6hp goes about 19mph right now with my 12ft John boat very light by the way what pitch prop should I get to get more speed
You'll see to check its RPM at max throttle to see if you're able to improve it. If its under the optimal RPM range you could go down in pitch for more speed or if its topping out you could go up for higher top end.
What Diameter is the prop you selected? Part number?
8.9" Dia. X 7.5" Pitch - Qa2154r

You'll have to measure your RPMs to see if your pitch needs to go up or down (or the diameter). Both work to increase or decrease your RPMs.
Thanks Good Video

Will a 1 inch increase in propellor pitch from 4.5 inch to 5.4 inch increase top speed all other parameters being equal. ??
It depends on where your current top end RPMs sit at.

I am using a 9 1/4 x 12 propeller for a 20hp 4s, which propeller can I replace to achieve maximum speed?

Hi man I only get 5160rpm one man on the boat fishing gear 15hp Yamaha 4m fiberglass boat so should I go down with pitch? Thanks
Absolutely, I'd say -2in you have room for
@@mvboutdoors no I don't but go down with pitch should help?
