    This is too common, customer went to multiple shops, wanting to wait, basically keeping it from being run enough to show it’s arse. Finally gave someone enough time to duplicate.
    This is where some of these same customers are all over the internet saying, “figures, they claim they can’t duplicate the problem.”
    smh

    Kudos for sticking with it till you figured it out. Customers need to understand that not every issue is an easy test and replace in a short amount of time. Some mysteries take longer to solve. No patience, no fix

    Great video!!
    These fans are notorious for failing on Panthers(2003-11) after 150,000+ miles... they can fail in several ways, usually by just "staying on" when the car is off, or not coming on at all, or only running at 10-25% speed when it should be roaring loud at max speed when the car is hot.... luckily a fast swap on a Panther.... easy access....
    Great video... I know that's one happy Customer now!!!
    Tips for an overheating car crisis... immediately roll the windows down and put the heater to max heat and max vent fan speed(you'd be shocked how much heat this can pull from the coolant). Try not to slow down if you suspect a fan failure at the radiator(wind flow from driving 35+ mph is usually sufficient to keep the car under a critical high temp).

      I've heard the cooling fan failure issue on panthers from a few people but I've yet to have an issue on my 09 Vic with about 260k I've owned since 2014 and 120k. I do tend to idle quite a bit too. The only electrical issue I've ever had was a broken wire to injector #7.
      Guess I'm just lucky! 😅

    Reminds me of what happened on my 99 Grand Marquis. The temperature kept spiking and nearly over heating.
    Checked power at the relay, ECU was calling for fan, swapped relay with horn or something and it was working, wiring connector on the fan assembly was melted.
    It had a two speed fan, only the low speed was burnt out so when it got hot enough the high speed would kick on until the temp dropped back down. I swapped in the later style fan assembly and wiring pigtail with the more robust contacts.

    This reminded me years ago my parents had a Cadillac STS. It would randomly stall out and restart within a few minutes. Took it to the dealer and the problem wouldn't show up, and finally one day it quit on my mom in rush hour traffic. Took it back to the dealer and they left it running all day outside the tech bay doors and it stalled. They started the diagnosis, and after a day of pinpoint tests they called the head engineers at Cadillac who couldn't figure it out either. The engineers gave the authorization to replace all computers for free and send the old ones to the corporate office. Come to find out the security computer had a small break in the solder that would cause the car to think it was being stolen and therefore shut the car down.

      That is odd, I've found that GM ignores the security module after the car starts, but the security light would be illuminated.

    DEPO is part of LKQ,...they sell new dot light assemblies/housings for some reeally decent prices... didnt know they did fan units too.

    Its not always easy and straight-forward. Had a friend who's Jeep was overheating. Popped the hood and found that his radiator was pushed in to form a perfect 45 degree angle which of course crushed the cooling fan. He had a "minor" accident and since his plastic bumper popped back out perfectly they just drove off without exchanging info.

    People just assume, "Hook up your computer and tell me what's wrong!" The computer is just a tool, you got to have a head to use the tool, and then decipher what it tells you as the tech. Even then, intermittent issues or lack of time can really be a pain in diagnosing problems accurately. Good on you for contacting the other shop, getting more information helped build a better picture on what is going on, and then you got to the bottom if it! Oddball mysteries like this one requires unconventional methods sometimes.

      Yep sometimes those computers just kinda put you in the right area but sometimes they can lead you astray, its definitely worth the extra work to catch the failure red-handed rather than shotguning parts at it til it goes away, I've seen techs throw sensors and ecms at problems and not solve it then I end up finding a broken wire that I fix with a but connector that solves the problem

    My lincoln continental fried the fan. I found some old tsb about it. The smell was easy to diagnose :lol:. I actually got a NOS assembly with a updated part number. Other option now is replacing just the fan itself. Had to be dropped out of the bottom with the radiator.

    1 of the primary reasons I'm glad to not be in "repair" anymore. They drop the car off to you during their lunch break and expect you to have the engine out & rebuilt so they can drive it back to work. That and these new cars with mystery issues like this. No codes, running fine, everything is working like it's supposed to until it magically doesn't that one time.
    Glad you found it, because these things can be a real pain in the rear. Like trying to put together a 10k piece puzzle, and two of those pieces are duplicates.

    My Camaro and Crown Vic went the same way....high fan was intermittent...but at least since it was own car I could check under the hood when the temp spiked. We had good customers that trusted us with intermittent problems and just tell us to keep the car and drive it home a couple of days or drive it over the week end to see if we could duplicate the issue....when your customers trust you it makes the world a better place...lol

    Sometimes you get electrical parts that acts funny only when it's good and hot, I had a duramax one time that would only develop charging problems when it had been running for hours, finally the owner agreed to roll the dice and replace the alternator with a new one and it solved the trucks charging issue but the place he got the new one from wouldn't give him his core refund because the bad alternator would always work fine on their bench tester, so I had him bring it back by the shop and I took a long skinny chisel and broke off some of the windings inside through the vent slots on the back of it, it failed after that and he got his core money back but im sure who ever rebuilds that one's gonna say wtf when they see the inside of it lol, but sometimes you gotta get sneaky with issues like that

    Had a similar problem on my 2007 Mustang GT. Cooling fan would work intermittently. Car overheated in a fast food drive thru lane. Shop found also the wire at the battery junction box for the fan relay was a little burnt. All good now.

    This whole thing was supposed to be about MKZ.
    And at the end I said Ford F-150!
    Far as compatibility wise only thing that I know is compatible with MKZ out the gate is the Ford fusion.
    What's in a video and having a conversation pertaining to this I guess somebody somewhere figured there's compatibility or concerns or similarities within them.
    Outside of that I'm not a mechanic but what I do know is when I go to the shops or to all these other places they all say interchangeable and only thing is interchangeable that I know of is car with car not car with truck

    Most of the double fans aren't cheap, factory fans used to cost 600 and higher. Customers don't realize can't fix something if its not acting up. Only speculate.

    I still like mechanical fans although they are loud as hell and can sap power from the engine.

      Yeah but electric fans have been common in vehicles for over 40 years so they have proven themselves as reliable.

    • @web1ece
      @web1ece 3 года назад +1

      The mechanical fans on newer vehicles have electric controlled clutches... so it isn't necessarily more reliable.

    • @meeder78
      @meeder78 3 года назад

      @@web1ece I meant the normal fans with electric motors that are used on most vehicles sold worldwide.

    • @abradolflincler00
      @abradolflincler00 3 года назад +1

      Some mechanical fans have issues to, it really comes down to the manufacturer, I would trust a Toyota electric fan over a mechanical Chrysler one any day of the week, but I will also say I agree with you keeping certain parts simple is definitely better for reliability

    I had a rental Nissan which overheated, I suspect the same thing, I was sitting at a Meatheads, eating lunch and surfing the web. Spent an hour waiting for the rental company to answer the phone, it cooked down enough to use it again, turned the heat all the way up to take it back to the airport and told the rental company that it overheated.

      Its a pretty good one for lighting. 1/2 price of brand marked lights. I got Depo headlights for $125-$150 each, when the dealer with VW marked lights were $490 each. Same thing on taillights. VW wamts outrageous $$ for light assemblies

    You know what I had a Pontiac Grand am fans want to kick on and they would overheat so with this other mechanic did he put a toggle switch inside my dash and every time that I would go run an errand or whatever I was just hit the toggle switch and then the fans would turn on no problem and then when I would go get out of my car turn off the fan turn off the car come back to my car put the start the car up and put the fan on it works for me like that
