Fascinating info about pottery which sheds some light on some of the sherds I find on the foreshore in Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis. Thanks for sharing Nicole and showing us all some of your wonderful collection of sea worn treasure.
Hello! We've never visited the Outer Hebrides, but would love to! Thanks so much, its really great to know this shed a wee bit of light on your finds! That always makes us happy! :D
Hello from South Carolina,USA. Thanks for info. I enjoy the beaches ya'll take us to on your videos. Look forward to the future ones. Good luck on reaching the 1,000 goal. I'm sure you'll surpass it many times over.
Thank you so much for following that link from Phyllis, what a star! Its great to have you with us! So happy to see you enjoyed the video - I can't tell you how much it means to us to be given this kind of positivity! Thank you!! :D
Hello, lovely to hear from you! Its so rewarding to read this - so glad we were able to do that! We are indebted to you - we can't thank you enough for spreading the word about the channel! You've made the pair of us very happy! Thank you so much! :D
Great video! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. You forgot to say when talking about weather that you have something I have never seen nowhere else: horizontal rain!!
Great to hear you enjoyed it! Thank you! :D We had a very fine example of our globally rare rain just the other day...it had us hiding in sand dunes - so horizontal, you could duck out of the way of it!! :D No weather, of any kind, at least so far, has kept Nicole off the beach - no word of exageration, Nicole has gone sea glassing in a blizzard!
Another very interesting video. I am glad you mentioned how cold the water is there (although I do know Scotland is north, I see people walking around in shorts and t-shirts from time to time and I wonder why no one is in the water). Here in the USA it doesn't seem to matter - where there is a beach, there is someone in it. Lol! I am learning a lot from watching your channel - thank you!
Great to hear from you! Thank you so much! Its so funny, here on the east coast, the water, the North Sea, is usually freeezing - a Scots comedian, Billy Connolly, once joked about how, a few miles off shore, oil workers are warned about how dangerous the cold water is, while back at the coast children are jumping about in it! So funny! I like to walk through the shallows when its sunny; Nicole dips a toe in and usually runs away laughing about how cold it is! :D So glad you are enjoying the channel! :D
Thanks for another interesting video, you always manage to find an interesting way to impart your knowledge and I loved seeing parts go your own collection. I hope you reach 1000 subscribers really soon, it is well deserved.
Thank you so much! We made this one a wee while ago now and thought it was about time we shared it more widely - so glad you liked it. Thank you, such a lovely comment! :D
Really enjoyed this video 🧜♀️ Thanks for your email, I'm in Auckland at the moment so will send photos of the black Seaglass when I return to Kerikeri next week.
Great to hear from you! Thank you! This was a labour of love! We have been sitting on this one for a while and thought now was a good time to let it out - sop glad we did, and so glad you enjoyed it. Auckland - I have to say, I hope the traffic, esp rush hour on the bridge, isn't a problem for you! Kerikeri - such a lovely part of the world! Looking forward to seeing your photos! :D
This was great! It's only a matter of time before your channel will really take off! I love the Codd Marble necklace I purchased from your etsy shop (same as the one you're wearing in this video)! The sponge-wear is darling too! Well done!
Great to hear from you! Thank you, so very kind! Really glad you enjoyed this one - we have been sitting on it for a few months, since the virtual festival, and thought it was the right time to put it up - it is always so rewarding to get such positive feedback! Wonderful to hear you are happy with your marble, thank you so much for your support, it really does mean the world to us. :D
Hi, great to hear form you! Oh that's cool! Do you recognise any of the patterns? Are they similar, or the same, as the spongeware we see here? Oh! Would love to travel there to have good hunt around! Hope oyu find enough to make that plate before too long - would love to see that! Thanks so much for watching and for being with us on our journey! :D
@@scottishmudlarking I didn't recognise any of the patterns that you showed. Mine are small fragments with mainly flower design's but my best piece has a ro of small brown birds, it's lovely!. Are you on instagram? x
The patterns we find here were almost exclusively made by the Methven pottery who used a part of the beach as a dump until the 1920s 😃 yes we are on Instagram ( send us a picture of your pieces , maybe we can find out what bird pattern is called!) - our Instagram link is in the about section or search for scottish_mudlarking 😊
If I had to make a guess about your channel that will be ""until christmas you will have 4000 subscribers at least"because you deserve it good luck to your finds stay safe and well these difficult times so that we can follow you to these lovely walks on the beach greetings from Greece
Hello from Scotland!! Wow! Thank you so much! That's so kind and encouraging! We are really lucky - living where we do, we are surrounded by some amazing, but very often neglected, shores - thankfully, that means we are seldom near anyone else. Stay safe and well, hope all is well in Greece. :D
Scottland is so very interesting to me. The way they lived in the past is so intriguing. My stepfather is Scottish and he wears his kilt to weddings and the renaissance festival in Phoenix Arizona! We get a few looks, but I tried to explain to him that He just doesn't have the legs for it!
Hello from Scotland! Thank you - we really hope you enjoy our videos and that they shed a wee bit of light on the things you find interesting. I only ever wear a kilt when asked to, for a wedding or fancy do - to be honest, I'm not sure I have the legs for it either! :D
@@scottishmudlarking You had me and my husband rolling on the floor with that comment! I am in awe over the old world history is right up my alley! Thank you for the reply! It makes me so happy! I almost can't wait to see what's next!! Thank you both so very much, we love your channel!
So glad you enjoyed this! We have been sitting on this one for a wee while, but thought it was a good time to put it out. We really enjoy the history of things, knowing where they came from and how people used them, makes these so much more then little shards of fired clay! Thank you! :D
Thank you for all the info. Why the pottery was on the beaches was a question I’ve had for awhile & it all makes sense now. It’s so cool to think the codd marble in my necklace from you was thrashing around in the ocean for so long before you found it. Congrats on nearly 1000 subs, well deserved.
Hi, good to hear form you! Thank you for watching, so glad you enjoyed it. Its so nice when we can share a little something of what we know, especially when it answers a question or two! :D We agree, it is amazing to just ponder the journey that each piece takes over time and through the sea before it comes ashore and reaches the right person - thank you for choosing your codd marble - the markings on each codd marble tell a unique story of their journey... Thank you so much... we're getting there, so glad you chose to join us on the way! :D
Excellent information. Thank you for taking the time to make this video, it was a pleasure to watch and learn (from a novice sea glass hunter/beachcomber ) here’s hoping you hit 1000 soon xx
Great to hear from you! So glad you enjoyed the video! We love finding the pictorial pieces, especially! Hope some pottery finds its way to you... we know these types, Spongeware particularly, are rare in other parts of the country and beyond! Thank you!
Thanks so much! I hope you find some - I'm sure we saw some pieces in the Auckland War Memorial Museum a few years ago. So glad you liked the video! :D
Really enjoyed seeing this video again, because the virtual beachcombing conference was quite the whirlwind, haha. I am wondering if you also find other items on the beach that come from these old pottery factories, parts of kilns, or tools, or maybe even parts of the buildings.
Awesome! Thank you so much for watching it, for a second time!! There sure was a lot of energy and activity in that conference - great fun! Really loved it! The main thing we find and can recognise as part of the potteries, are 'kiln stilts' - we find the little pyramid shaped ones most often. There are several different kinds and various sizes of these stilits - they were used to seperate pieces of pottery so more couldbe staked into a kiln and so that the pieces fired evenly. :D
Hi, good to hear from you! Thanks so much - the video was a labour of love... great to hear we have that effect - hope the weater is nice so you can get out and about hunting treasures! As we approach the first 1000, there are days when we feel like the tortoise, other days we feel like the hare! But one thing never changes and that's how grateful we are to you and everyone who has come along with us on this wee adventure! Thank you! :D
What the heck is wrong with me! Two videos I missed!?? How is it possible!!?? Your Spongeware is my favorite I think! Very "Hands on," manufacturing. Even here in Canada children made the original Spongeware, I don't think it was child labor per se, but they obviously kept costs down. My understanding is the kids went to school and had part time work as well, not the best situation, the sponges in Canadian Spongeware seemed to have used larger figures. Was pottery the main industry in Scotland? I imagine fishing was as well. Matching patterns is great, it shows just how much of a pattern was made! Purple has to be rare? I've never seen it. My favorite find to see on the ocean front are Codd Bottle Marbles. My wife is quite excited about the marble pendent I ordered from you. I hope your weekend is awesome!
Glad you found the missing pair of videos! :D Really glad you enjoyed seeing the Spongeware. Child labour was very much the norm until quite recently really... Yes, children were employed in many jobs in the old potteries here in Scotland, and in many other industries too - pretty much a continuation of work carried out by children in per-industrial cottage industries. Interesting to hear what you say about the Canadian patterns! Oh! A codd bottle is a great find! I hope the codd marble pendent races its way to you! :D Thank you!
